EDIT: Unfortunately medium size isn't good for anyone anymore so these old default sized shield with no resize options just aren't mechanically very good even if they are rare materials.

Don't attempt to have ti altered or lightened, you won't get a laen back.

You either train shields as a primary defense like a warrior / pally in plate
Or you train them as supplementary defense and rely more on evasion (rogues, for instance)

If you rely a lot on shield use, you probably want a tower shield.
If you don't, you probably want a small shield.

Some people do use mediums, but i think bucklers and towers are more sought after than mediums.

I've used a medium as long as I've played. I'm a warrior in MBP with 2x Shield and 1x Dodge. I think medium is perfect for me, and can be good for many people.
