Anyone else on here play Magic the Gathering online? Just curious how competitive the "cash" games are. Also looking for some friendlies and maybe some tune up help, I've been out of the game for close to 15 years.
Some human to human trading might not be such a bad thing either. All I get on there are bots.

Most people I know who still play Magic use Magic workstation or whatever. Not quite the same thing, I know. They just use it for practice at real tourneys.

Haven't been in the game for about 5-6 years myself, but I've been thinking of picking it up again. My wallet reminds me I'm not.

Can you buy the game and have access to every card and set, or do you buy the game and buy packs and sets of cards online?

The "game" is free, then you pay the same price for boosters or theme decks that you would in a retail store. Now, if by some miracle, or a shit load of spending, you manage to accumulate a full set, you can have the set deleted from your online inventory, and a cardboard set will be mailed to you.

The WoTC game is free I believe, but it's just a rules system and enviroment for the cards. You have to purchase digital cards just like physical booster packs at (I believe) the same price. You used to be able to trade full sets in for physical full sets, not sure if that's still the case.

Magic workstation is free, and I'm sure there are other free ones too... it's been a while. They're not Wizards sanctioned or anything, so it's more like just a free program to build and test decks with other people. Still seems pretty popular though.

Oh yeah. I messed with that a few years ago. Something about buying all my favorite cards again that throws me off.

Yeah, $9.99 startup gets you several free decks for standard play and a plethora of extended cards, which I don't even use. It also gets you one booster from the Core 2013 set. I managed to pull a foil planeswalker from mine and trades that in to a bot for 7 more boosters...

I still don't have a "quality" collection, I can't field anything "unbeatable" unless I get terribly lucky. I'm loathe to drop in more money knowing it's going to take a bunch to get competitive.

Yes, you can still trade your e-set in for a real one if you complete the full set, and pay the $25 postage.

Also, if you're buying boosters, use the bots. For current sets you'll save $1-$1.50 per booster. You buy event tickets from the WotC shop ($1 each) and trade those for boosters.
