View Full Version : Some newbie questions

I've been poking around for a few days to get a feel for the basic mechanics, game world, etc., but i still have a few newbie questions

1. Are there any in-game chat options in which it is okay to break character?

2. As a Wizard, what are my options or necessary skill/stat investments for identifying, appraising, and viewing the stats or specs or details description of an item? I'm currently not sure how to evaluate decisions between things like purchasing a basic long sword or sticking with a hand axe, or something else like a main gauche. Or know how many "sips" or "bites" i'll get out of a purchased consumable

3. Is there a quest tracking or in-game notepad I can use for the same?

4. Injuries: I know a friendly empath can help here, but is there a method for me to take care of these myself?

5. Death: Is there a way to release my spirit prior to the 10-15 minutes you get to wait for a res?

Thanks!

1) There are specific OOC meetings scheduled on the calendar. However, in all honestly, nowadays RP isn't exactly as stringent as it used to be. Acting like yourself is acceptable, but bringing things like the forums or LNET into the game is definitely breaking RP. Basically, feel free to break RP in OOC whispers.

2) I wrote up a nice lengthy wizard's guide for all the info you need about being a wizard: http://forum.gsplayers.com/showthread.php?79515-Pure-Archer-Mage-amp-Warmage-Information
For evaluating weapon versus weapon... refer to Krakiipedia, the wiki of gemstone. Google it, you'll find it.

3) There really aren't that many quests compared to other, more modern MMOs, the only real quest system is the bounty system, which you can track by using the BOUNTY verb.

4) Herbs, or NPC healer.

5) DECAY verb... however, chances are, people will rescue you. Decaying will also cause Death's Sting, which will reduce XP absorption until a certain amount of XP has effectively been lost.

Your best protection from death is to be social. The more people that know you, and know where you are, means the more people that will know you're local when you die. Publicity is Publicity.

Ohh, and you can die without worry about death's sting til level... 10 I think?

You can use LNET on Lich (http://lichproject.org/) which will give you a whole other set of tools to use in game. The LNET chat gets dirty, so if you're averse to that you can always ;untune lnet and use one of the other chat channels with a lot fewer people on it.

2. As a Wizard, what are my options or necessary skill/stat investments for identifying, appraising, and viewing the stats or specs or details description of an item? Are you a warmage (swinging wizard)? If you are a pure wizard you will be best off with a runestaff (http://www.krakiipedia.org/wiki/Runestaff).

For items you can use the spell 405 (elemental detection), or the verbs analyze, inspect, weigh, measure

3. Is there a quest tracking or in-game notepad I can use for the same?

You can log your sessions easily with StormFront or the Wizard.

4. Injuries: I know a friendly empath can help here, but is there a method for me to take care of these myself?

Use herbs (http://www.krakiipedia.org/wiki/Herbs). Different cities/regions have different sets of herbs.

5. Death: Is there a way to release my spirit prior to the 10-15 minutes you get to wait for a res?

Depart (confirm)

Thanks all for the answers! I'll check out the different links/resources given-- Lich looks especially useful. I'm leaning towards a WarMage build, but at these early stages I'm trying to be flexible and not commit too much to stats I won't need if I decide to adapt a little in a different direction. I'm also not sure if I'll end up going with DragonRealms or GS IV... any Simutronics discount for subs to both? In a few more days I'll probably start to DR trial to see how that compares in terms of play mechanics and the feel of the game world, and then choose one or the other, although with the way I'm enjoying GS IV, if DR strikes a chord with me as well I might end up in both even if there's no discount.

Anyway, thanks again!
