View Full Version : What size yard do you have and what kind of lawn mower?

What size yard does everyone here have and what kind of lawn mower do you use? Is it a riding lawn mower, gas push mower, electric push mower, battery push mower? What brand and make and model?

My parents have a lot size of .52 acres but I figure the actual lawn is about a third of an acre because when I fertilize the yard for them I buy fertilizer that says it'll cover 15,000 square feet and there is usually a little bit of the product left when I'm done. My dad bought a riding lawn mower because it was much easier for him to use but now that he can't even use the riding lawn mower I mow the lawn for them. Problem is the thing needs some maintenance, new oil filter, gas filter, needs an oil change, it needs a new blade, etc etc. I replaced the battery and the air filter and those two things alone cost almost 70 bucks. I looked up the pricing of some place near here that does these sort of things and just the labor for all of this is 175 bucks, 75 dollars extra if they have to bring the mower to their shop and back (which I have a strange feeling they will find a reason that requires this.) I figure parts alone are probably going to be close to 150 bucks. So almost 400 dollars to have someone do it for me or 150 bucks to do it myself, either way this sounds pretty expensive for a lawn that isn't really that big.

I am really tempted to just put that money towards a battery powered lawn mower, I've seen some good ones that are only 400 dollars; no oil, no gas, no filters, only maintenance they need apparently is the blade either needs sharpening or replaced and a new blade is only 20-30 bucks. Only problem is I see a lot of people saying the advertised battery lengths are grossly exaggerated, people buying 2 or 3 extra batteries just to finish their .5-1 acres.

Anyone have any experience with battery mowers? I've seen people out by where my parents live with much smaller yards and they all seem to be using riding lawn mowers, but the yard doesn't really seem that big to require a riding lawn mower. 15,000 square feet should be easy with a push mower, right?

When I had a lawn: quarter acre, the whickity whickity manual kind.

You will receive no lenience here for your flagrant underspreading of fertilizer. (Also, terrorist.)

Finally, do not buy a single replacement wheel for your lawn mower. Just don't.

A large part of my yard is taken up by a penis shaped pond, so I manage with just a cheap little push mower.

I've used a battery powered weed eater before. It lasted maybe 5-10 minutes before the battery died. You'll probably have similar results with a battery powered anything that involves yardwork.

I was thinking of just going with the cheapest push mower too. Rather than putting so much money into the riding lawn mower for maintenance it actually makes more sense to just buy a brand new push mower every year. Not that I would, just saying.

Little over a quarter acre of actual grass (House + pool/back deck area takes up most of the lot) and....are you all ready for this one? A WHITE GUY maintains it for me.

Oddly enough, all the mexicans around here are either fruit pickers, road workers, or roofers...most of the "lawn care professionals" are actually redneck white dudes.

If you have any trees in your lawn, that thing will bind up as soon as you hit a branch. Really annoying if you have a lot of trees (like in my neighborhood).

I would consider your purchase based on the layout of your lawn.
I have a YardMachine 675 push mower. Maintenance consists of changing the oil in the spring, and adding gas to it when it stops running. The interwebs tells me I have a little over 1/3rd of an acre.

I like it because it's light, can bag or not (which is useful when fall comes and my entire yard is leaves), and hasn't given me any trouble.

My parents have a self-propelled push mower, as their yard is a bit bigger. It is nice because their yawn is nice and long, with nothing in the middle of it. The problem with these is that if you have to turn a lot (such as when you have a narrow lawn, or a lot of random shrubbery in the middle) it's heavy to lift because it's got to have a motor in it.

My advice: go on consumer reports, buy the highest rated lawnmower they list. If you have a big lawn with nothing in the middle of it, think about a self-propelled; it'll be a little more finicky maintenance-wise, but will make mowing the lawn as hard as walking around the block a few times. Don't get one of the mechanical old-fashioned ones unless you a) want to make your lawn look like a golf course, b) are a huge hippy, or c) feel you should be punished for something you can't admit to anyone else, and self-flagellation would ruin too many of your shirts.

The manual mower binding thing is so overstated. Just pluck out the branch, or toss it aside beforehand. Unless you mow your law like some sort of Bohemian small r republican you do it in rows, as you're doing the row adjacent to the branched row throw a Tyler Hansbrough kick at it. Satisfaction guaranteed.

I am speaking from experience. Anytime there's any hint of wind all the trees in my neighborhood shake out hundreds of branches. Yes, I could go around my yard and collect them, or bend over and pick them up as I'm mowing; grumbling to myself as one of the ones I missed bind the mower. Whereas with *my* mower, I just roll over them and it eats them up. Why would I exchange 1 chore for 2?

I am going to presume you live in the Forbidden Zone where nothing grows, so I understand you not being familiar with the tree branch problem.
