Rule 1) There's more to life than money. I'm making less than I could because of the intangible benefits (getting to leave when I want so I can take my kids to the zoo, baseball games, etc) which were worth more than the bump in pay elsewhere. Make sure you factor in stuff like that if it's important to you. So if you've got a hobby that really makes you happy and the lower paying one allows you to do more of it weigh that heavily.
Either way congrats on getting in to your field and stepping into corporate 'murica.

Yeah, I care a lot about location and flexibility. The difference right now is like 2.5-3x, and the other place pays hourly with little/no benefits (but you get paid for every hour!), so I told them to give me 2/3 more than their first offer. We'll see what happens.

Actually, in all seriousness, this is why I went in-house. But (and this is a big but) when you're young and you want to make money, it's okay to compromise on flexibility and time and other things in order to get the experience and make the money. I worked 90 hours a week for five or six years and I was exhausted, but I don't regret it at all.

Data analysis.
Wow that's huge. Market data from Kenexa for an entry level financial analyst role in the northeast has total targeted cash of $54k in the finance and accounting industry. That's averages from Hewitt, Mercer, Towers Watson and Western Management anyway. What's the revenue and # of FTE at that company and I can narrow it down even more.

Most corporations participate in salary surveys, so I likely do have it or something like it, even if it's not from the specific company your offer came from. In either case, it wasn't a dig at you, I was just saying that's a great offer. Compensation is what I do so the information is readily available to me, so I was just sharing what a great offer it was based on what I knew.

I feel the opposite should be the case. People should be transparent and willing to discuss salaries so that job offers and negotiations can be handled much more fairly. Right now for the most part when people get a job offer of $X, because it's so taboo to discuss salaries, that person has no idea if that offer is fair or too little. The person making the offer has a lot of information about salaries, but the person receiving the offer has next to none, so there is a great deal of information asymmetry.
The situation is a lot better now with a lot of sites providing salary statistics, but really there's nothing shameful or boastful about saying what your salary is.

I agree with this, there really is no reason to hide it, Although, there is a point it does start to get boastful. I mean, if your CEO of a company, and your pulling in 1 mill in salary and bonuses of 8 figures, then your just bragging.

My peers and I compare salaries/bonuses/raises all the time. I think it's important to do within a given field for the reasons you wrote.
I think it is an entirely different beast to tell people on a forum about a text-based role playing game how much you make. That is just bragging and has very little, if any, value to the reader.

Congrats on the new job. Hope it goes well. Like someone said earlier, Im kind of surprised they didn't salary that position at that pay rate. Wouldnt think they'd want to risk having to pay overtime rates if that was a possibility. Course salary has its pros and cons like most things. More work flexibility in hours and schedule usually vs the companys ability to take advantage of you in working more hours at the same pay(at least up to a point.) Anyway, good luck.

You CAN be... but it's unusual, especially at that hourly rate, and is worth raising the question about being a contractor, which would have large implications towards overall compensation.

I've looked into doing that through Robert Haft International in Boston as one of their professional consultant gigs. If that's the company, sounds good, you'll be set for a while. At least the recruiting company will handle providing benefits rather than needed to go through enrolement as a solo person, and dealing with the taxes hassle afterwards,
As long as in your employment contract, the responsibility to find work is on the recruiting company to find you work, and that they will continue to compensate you between projects for up to X months in the event of no work/contract. Then you're all set. I know when I was first looking out of school, I wasn't established enough for them to guarantee that to me initially out of school. It was after my first job that they offered me the 'professional' consultant gig, rather than being just a professional temp basically.

It's a different company, but similar, based in a suburb. They kept assuring me that the company I'm going to keeps people on long term as consultants, as much as 7 years in some cases. I'll have to see about compensation between jobs, but I figured this would be long enough (the hiring manager explicitly said it's not one project and there's a lot to get done) that I could find something else by the time it ended if I needed to.

All the recruiters say that gigs are usually long term! Being on the consultant hiring side, I can assure you that shit happens within organizations hiring consultants, and nothing is guaranteed!
Other followup questions would be what happens in the event that you wish to switch companies that you're consulting for, what occurs in the instance of a bad performance review from the consulted company, or just simply not getting along with your employers due to differing personas.
Did you also interview with the hiring company that you would be working for, or is this offer contingent on being accepted into the position that they have lined up for you?
Sorry for the 20 questions, and really don't mean to cause any anxiety, just want to make sure that your ass is covered from my own experiences searching for jobs in the area. Jobs are relationships with a very short vetting process that are much more difficult to get out of if it turns abusive!

I interviewed with the hiring company, and my employment with the consulting firm was contingent on being accepted there. I don't know the answers to the other questions. It's a company I would want to work for, and the hiring manager told me they don't take on young people as permanent employees.

My grandpa told me never to discuss my salary with anyone. He felt it was poor to brag and discussing such things inevitably leads to awkward situations. This is a different time though. If you have the swag, use it. Just keep it cool.
There is a very good chance that your grandfather lived through the great depression. You will find that people that lived through that period of time have a very different view on money, employment and their bosses. They were thankful just to have a job when so many people didn't have jobs and they were thankful to the person that gave them that job. It is a very different world.

This is very true. My great grandmother (she already had multiple kids from a previous marriage) married a man she didn't really like because he had land and could grow his own food. Probably the only reason I am here is because of that. I'd say that even the next generation didn't really discuss it, because they still grew up with it, but now, it's kinda the norm.

Congratulations on the job :) I made the mistake of deciding to "take off" a year of school (was pursuing a BS in comp. sci.) and work to save up money. My parents couldn't help much with tuition, I lived on campus, and didn't receive a lot of financial aid (couple grants/scholarships, but I was paying about 75% of the cost). Got a job at the company I still work for doing data entry, then just never got around to going back to school after getting sucked into the job and promoted a couple times. Now I'm a project manager for three different projects at the company I work for. Had I stayed in school, I'm sure I would be making a higher salary than I do now, and I may eventually go back, but good on you for sticking through it all the way to your masters!
Before I entered the position I'm in now I was offered either salary or hourly. Five years later I really wish I had taken hourly. Having a little more flexibility on when I work is nice, and I can do a fair amount of work from home each day, but I would have actually ended up making a fair bit more with OT pay. I currently work 12-14 hour days and every other weekend, and on especially busy periods can expect to work 16+ hours a day. It's exhausting, but I really like the work I do and most of the people I work with. That said, an extra 25k+ a year from overtime pay would be nice.

So the most nerdy of the nerds?
It was purely a gaming club... Back when it was created it was both board games and computer games. The name was specifically selected so that we would be able to 'sell' the club membership, while making it seem to be an academic program, based on strategy and higher level thinking rather than just sitting around playing Halo.
We received funding from the school on a semesterly basis. During my reign, we received about 10-15k per semester to invest towards video games, consoles, and computer upgrades for the dozen desktops that we maintained.
We hosted competitions with Brandeis, a neighbor school, as well as series of competitions on campus... Although, unfortunately, when I was attending, we had a world-class Halo Player living in my dorm... so it deterred a lot of more prominent players from attending. We did Halo, Starcraft 1&2, Super Smash Brothers. We even rented out the school's pub a few nights and set up Rock Band nights with an open bar.
So yes... we were nerds, but we also received funding, used organization skills, and didn't have a retarded organization name, so that it could be used to help us build our careers. Clearly that shit helped both Bob and I.

Nah... found her on facebook, looks like she was graduating when I was a freshman... don't know her.

Are we posting our own job stories now? I thought this thread was about jarvan sucking dick.
Wouldn't that be Jarvan's job story?
Or it could be interesting.
I am curious what it would take to build a 14,000 square foot custom home on top of a mountain.
If you're genuinely curious, pm me, and I will tell you.

Papers are signed, starting in two weeks, fellating penises all around.
Thanks again for everyone's support.
Also this is a really good case study in why HR departments are crippling companies' talent acquisition. I've never had a bad conversation with a hiring manager, but I don't get in front of enough of them.

That's fantastic. Let us know how it goes. And amen to that part about HR departments. I refuse to work with non-contracters for this reason. Recruiters and hiring managers can usually spot talent in the first 10 minutes. They don't waste their time and they're usually honest about what they need.

Yeah, I've come to realize that he's just a dick sucking mail clerk.
