View Full Version : Milk - Does it Do a Body Good?

So it occurred to me that American (bovine) milk might be bad for me. What about soy or, failing that, almond? Well it turns out there are a huge number of shrieking madpersons on the internet claiming both sides for every option, and I'm not sure which of them to trust so I thought I would turn to the shrieking madpersons we have here.

Healthy-speaking, which is the best option? Assume that I am neither an infant nor pregnant.

While I don't have a specific nutrition background, I've been a crossfit coach for 4 years and a Licensed Massage Therapist (and Massage Instructor) for 3. Take that for what you think it's worth. Generally speaking most of the calcium in cow's milk is indigestible by the human body as is. That's why lots of milk is vitamin D fortified (you need vitamin to absorb calcium). You can't milk an almond so what you're generally drink is almond water (plus whatever they add in the processing). If you're a vegan then soy is an option but if you're male you need to be mindful of phytoestrogens and their effect on the body. Research is still unreliable about the effects on the male body.

Ultimately I would suggest sitting down and figuring out what it is that you want from milk. If it's stronger bones then I would recommend deep leafy greens like spinach and kale. Plus meats. If you just enjoy the taste and don't mind processed foods I would say go almond milk. Personally I'd consider soy a last resort.

I am not a nutritionist, a cross-fit instructor, a massage therapist, or anything more than a binge exerciser, but here are my thoughts. You don't need to drink milk, but you can. If you do, I highly suggest quality over quantity (find a locally sourced, grass fed non-homogenized whole milk - if you live in a place with options do a taste test).

I personally don't see how millions of years of evolution can be wrongTell that to your appendix.

Originate
04-30-2013, 04:47 PM
I would say the choice depends on what aspect you are concerned about, and what you use your milk for. If it is about the lactose or denatured proteins in commercial milk, I highly suggest finding a place that sells raw, unpasteurized milk from grass fed or mostly grass fed cows. The fat found in unpasteurized/unhomogenized grass fed cow milk is higher in omega-3, and CLA, but the inverse is true with grain fed/ pasteurized milk (higher omega 6, lactase enzyme is destroyed + less CLA) and this may be part of what links commercial milk to some adverse health affects.
As far as milk alternatives, this also relates to what concerns and preferences you have. You may want to do research on the unknown affects of phyto sterols in soy, and be made aware that almost all conventional soy milk is GMO'd. Almond and coconut milk are pretty tasty, but both contain a lot of ingredients, some of which may be gut irritants, like the gums used. So, if you are considering finding a milk alternative due to GI distress, you may want to consider making your own nut milk if you want to go the non-dairy route.

Archigeek
04-30-2013, 04:55 PM
That's why you want grass fed cow milk. Cows fed on corn are not healthy cows, because their digestive system isn't designed to process corn. Commercially processed milk has most of the nutrients cooked out of it, and as Originate was saying, the omega 6/omega 3 ratio is backwards.

Milk is scary shit nowadays. At least the kind you get in the grocery store. They've pretty much ripped anything good out of it through the food processing that's needed to make it sellable in market... Mainly because the FDA sucks balls.

The Pasteurization process basically kills any naturally occurring, good bacteria, vitamins, and minerals that would be found in milk. You need to heat it to such high temperatures for pasteurization, that the good crap just breaks down into bad crap. Pasteurization used to be ridiculously required back in the day... And when I say back in the day, I mean the 1920s, when there was no regulation on anything, and people thought you got Herpes from talking to people, and stupid things like that. Back then, transporting milk from California to NY was commonplace, and done in oak casks that previously contained whiskey. Needless to say, nothing survived the trip... People were stupid. Nowadays, we have things like Stainless Steel, and Glass, and basic understanding of keeping the world not covered with shit like a scene out of Monty Python. So, all it's doing for us nowadays is ensuring that Milk NEEDS to be fortified with vitamins A & D, because otherwise milk would be as nutritious as a Hershey's bar.

The homogenization, named after the collective Drews of PC, takes all that awesome, healthy, good protein that milk supposedly has, and forces it through holes so small, only Jeril's penis would be able to fit. But when you force the proteins of the milk through the process, it ends up warping and breaking the molecular structure, effectively destroying a good chunk of the natural protein content. And of course... this process is just done so that people don't need to shake the bottle before they drink it. Which just adds insults in injury, as everyone loves shaking it like a polaroid picture.

Furthermore, the dairy world has the Tisket grip on the FDA balls so much so that it makes the NRA's grip on the republican party look like a toddler's grip on candy. To the point where the selling of 'raw milk', which is straight from the cow tits, illegal in some/most states. In MA, we need to go to a farm directly to buy raw milk, sign waivers, and all sorts of other crap just to be able to buy a product that is A) Easier to Produce (B) Cheaper to Produce (C) More beneficial for health.

Additionally, don't believe that crap that is commonly associated with soy products. Mainly... Soy will not increase estrogen levels... this is a common, and stupid bro-science myth. While Soy contains PLANT hormones called Phytoestrogen... it does absolutely jack shit to the human bodies. Do you get smarter if you eat animal brains? If you eat female cows rather than male cows, are you gonna grow utters? Have you ever grown leaves from eating a salad? There are some things that simply don't react to humans. Like repeated attempts to sell a 5x fusion composite bow for 4.5m. Just because they exist, doesn't mean it matters or effects anything.

Regardless of whether you choose Soy, Almond, or the next trendy thing produced by hippie vegans, just do your research, and choose on taste. If you're using milk as a way of getting vital nutrients... buy multi-vitamins, or vitamin-powder and forget about it.... And if you need help deciding which vitamins to choose, do another multi-select thread, so I can post a similar response there!

Like diethx said I am definitely sticking with pasteurization, because...
Nowadays, we have things like Stainless Steel, and Glass, and basic understanding of keeping the world not covered with shit like a scene out of Monty Python....I am not totally convinced of the third part. My mom grew up on a farm that we have since visited, and I'll just leave it at I'm not totally convinced.

Goat's milk is naturally homogenized. If you are going to drink cow's milk raw is the best way to go. Pasteurization kills the naturally occurring lactate that we need to digest the lactose in milk. This is what I was told anyway by a holistic MD who was helping a friend of mine with her cancer.
Honestly if you don't have any issues with processing dairy and only really use it on your cereal I don't think it much matters. Your cereal is probably worse for you than full fat milk, especially if it has wheat in it. Genetically modified wheat is so bad for us, unfortunately everything they sell now is modified. It's hard to come by heirloom flour.
