View Full Version : Another sick dog.
I'm so tired I want to cry. I only got to sleep a little less than four hours ago. The entire night was spent up with my dog, trying to figure out what's wrong with him, being worried, and dreading a vet visit (we're poor students and we're already in the hole this month.)
Lemme tell you what went on and maybe you guys can help me keep him out of the vet's. I'm so worried I'll probably take him anyway and just bounce a check, but... it'd be better if I didn't have to.
Around two, the dog's stomach started rumbling something fierce. I mean, I could feel his whole body shaking with it, and hear it from several feet away. He wasn't burping, or passing gas, or vomiting (although he did much earlier in the day.) He wouldn't sit or lie down for very long, just kept pacing in circles.
His stomach wasn't/isn't distending like it would if he had bloat, thankfully, or I would have rushed him to the emergancy animal clinic. I spent alot of the night trying to look up his symptoms on the net but the only thing the search yielded was more bloat information which he only had a couple symptoms of and not the most important one (distending tummy.)
I finally got him a little settled around seven o'clock after he had diarrhea (with no worms in it, and he's up to date on his Sentinel.) Just as I was settling to sleep, he started yelping and running around. He looked as though something were biting or attacking him because he kept looking around even though nothing was there.
I was going to take him to the vet then and there, but as I was hurriedly getting dressed he stopped. He just went back to the bed and curled up again. Not in a listless sort of way, but in that "Okay.. that's over. Yawn!" kind of way.
So I decided to give it until I woke up, which I kind of expected to be later (Bah!)
Four hours later, he seems fine. But if you guys have any ideas about what this was or what to do about it further, please tell me!

Yeah. Ghosts definitely cause diarrhea.
I'd say he might've just ate something he wasn't supposed to. Keep and eye on him.

I'm going with what Peam said. Perhaps some indigestion? You might want to look in the phonebook and see if you can find a 24 hour vet clinic so you can either drive over there or call them and explain the symptoms.
We have one down the street from us and it has been a total blessing having that thing open at 2am some nights.

There are other kinds of parasites besides the worms that Sentinal kills..he might have one of those. Or he might have a hemarrhoid, which could explain why he "held it in" until he got the runs and even after that kept checking his backside. A tiny tear in the anus can HURT like nobody's business, and a dog wouldn't be able to tell you "dood - get me some preperation H!"
Or it could've been indigestion..check the plants in your house, see if any leaves look chewed off. Could be a mild case of food poisoning, or he could've had an intestinal block.
It really could've been pretty much anything - and you won't know if it's gonna be a problem down the line unless you bring the pooch to the vet.
If you can't afford a vet bill, then maybe you should seriously consider finding a new home for the dog. Imagine how you would feel if he relapses and dies, all because you couldn't scrounge up the money to pay a vet bill. Maybe call your folks (or your roommate's folks) and ask them to give you a hand with financing the trip to the vet. Find a sympathetic neighbor, disconnect your cable TV for a few months, have a tag sale, whatever it takes that's legal.
"I can't afford it" is no excuse not to take care of an animal whose life rests completely in your hands.

ROFL that last line is hilarious.
Thank you for all the advice, and because Conan thinks you 'mean well', thank you for pointing out I'm a bad pet owner. Next time I'll act like one and just toss my dog outside the next time he seems sick.

That's some flat-out cold shit Jazuela. She said previously that she was going to take the dog to the vet if he got sick again, even if it meant bouncing a check. Stop being such a know-it-all bitch all the time.

Purposely bouncing checks depending on the amount can either be a serious misdemeanor or even a felony...

I'd serve time for my dog.

Okay...please tell me you're exaggerating...
A pet is a pet, but that'd wreck your life. And who would take care of it?

 Some people.
Anyway, DCSL, hope your dog just ate something that disagreed with him and that was it.
I know I brought it up before but have you ever considered pet insurance? It might be worth it, considering you're on a budget and your dog's having a lil trouble. It might be like a couple of hundred dollars but (God forbid) something's seriously wrong with your dog, it'll cost WAY more to take care of. There are some different ones out there, one I had for my cat I actually got the information from my vet. My mom just took out one for my niece's dog she just got. Just something to consider and look into if you're interested.

If you have a larger dog you may want to pay extra attention to them. They have a nasty habit of having their stomach twist so they can't swallow anything. That's what happened to my last Akita (greatest dogs ever, btw). It was not a pleasant experience at all. We had to put her down.
I'm not trying to scare you, just letting you know. By the way, when I say larger, I mean large. My dog was 135 lbs.

My dog once ate a holly bush leaf (very spikey) and when she shit it got stuck there and she was running around crying.
What was even more sad is my mom had to pull it out. Thank God for school.
Now whenever she takes a shit she runs away when she's done while looking behind her.
I suppose if the thing was poking her in stomach she may act much in the same way as your dog is. Good luck.

Yeah, I was thinking about doing that. In a couple of months, everything should be back to normal money-wise (had some not-usual emergancy expenses this month) and I'll probably get the pet insurance then. Thanks!

It's a small dog and it's not that... The stomach twisting thing is called bloat colloquially. Thankfully it wasn't that, because my dog's stomach wasn't distending and he wasn't attempting to vomit or anything like that.

The only odd thing that my dog ate that day was a stale biscuit that dropped out of the trash and got inhaled before I could get it. But he threw up right after and then seemed fine for the rest of the day until that night. Thankfully my dog lives in-doors 'cept for training and 'potty breaks' and park outtings, so it's pretty easy to know everything he eats.
But, luckily, he's been doing quite well since that night. Like it never happened. So who knows?

I only laughed my ass off because something similar happened to our dog.
He managed to get into the garbage, and get ahold of one of those cotton twine net things that go around a pork roast. You know, they keep everying in place while it's cooking and you just pull it off before you eat it?
Anyway, little fucker decides to EAT the netting, and the next day tries shitting it out, and so half of it is hanging out his ass while he's running around trying to rub his butt on the floor.
Fortunately for me, I was at work or school or something, and my boyfriend had to er um....help him get it out the rest of the way.

Oh don't worry, I found it funny too when it was all said and done. :)
I still smile when I see her just instinctively run the second she's done doing her business.
