(CNN) -- An explosion ripped through a fertilizer plant Wednesday night in West Texas, causing dozens of injuries, officials said.
A hospital in Waco, Texas, has been told to anticipate 100 injured people coming in from the fertilizer plant area, an official at the medical facility said. Glenn Robinson, CEO of Hillcrest Hospital, said a field triage station was being set up on a football field near the plant some 18 miles north of Waco after the Wednesday night explosion.
"We have had a steady flow of patients coming in by ambulance as well as by private vehicles," Robinson told CNN's Anderson Cooper. He said more than a dozen injured people had been brought in by ambulances and "more than 20 -- that number is continuing to climb -- by private vehicle."

Holy crap. Given the enormous fire, in the video before the explosion, it seems like everyone should have been evacuated anyway. Maybe that's why there are no reports of deaths so far.

The real question I have is this..

Who the fuck builds a middle school across from a fertilizer plant? I mean, I know I lack common sense at times, but this one would be a no brainer even for me.

As an architect who specializes in the design of hazardous material spaces, I can tell you that it may not even be legal in today's building code. That plant should have been a quarter of a mile from the nearest building, and been no where near any school or residential space, and should have probably had berms built around the perimeter to absorb some of the blast. Very poor thinking by whomever put the plant there, or worse if the school was built after the plant. Fertilizer is basically the raw material for bomb making. The only thing worse would be like that plant Pepcon plant in Nevada that blew up. There's great video of that explosion, as a TV crew happened to catch it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJVOUgCm5Jk

So incompetent or corrupt city planners are worse than terrorists?

Keller is probably closer to the truth, though every state in the union uses the same basic building code these days, even Texas. They all have their amendments, so each is a little different, but most of it is the same from state to state. The nuances are good income for me actually. Most people would prefer to hire an expert instead of slogging through code books.
