View Full Version : Good place for level 59 pure bard to hunt?

My bard has outgrown his current hunting grounds and I'm in need of a new one. Any suggestions? Preferably somewhere in Landing (or Sol, not sure if critters get that high of level there though.)
I was thinking about Massive Troll Kings mostly because I've never hunted them before (I know, I suck) but I'm wondering how well that would work out with sonic disruption possibly blowing off limbs. Do their limbs always grow into another massive troll king or is it just a possibility? Anything else to look out for from them or their hunting area?

At 54 I'm hunting Blighted Forest in Illistim. Critters are 59-60. It's not the Western towns, but .. well, I hate those so yeah.

MTKs are good for bards, also Teras.

I started hunting mtks and harbingers as my main go-to ground begining at 50. Of course, I am sword and board so can't speak how effective it is for pures...but I'll share what I know.
All MTK limbs start growing when cut off. The growth cycle is fairly slow, but they try to run away from you and grow in an empty room.
I've actually found 1025 surprisingly effective on MTKs. The reason is they have no armor, and when they froth the DS drops to ridiculously low numbers. It also helps cleanup the severed limbs. After you/it kills the MTK, it will automatically target the severed limbs.
I don't think their Bard TD is that high for their level. I can ward them at 53 bard songs and no 425 at a low margain. The problem you will face - they don't die from death crits, which I think is the point of 1030. You have to take them down with straight health loss and they don't stun.
Harbingers may be an option, but beware they cast spirit spells like bind, rage, mind jolt, and some other annoying stun spell. If you have the DS in offensive of around 320ish+ you should be just fine.
In summary, I doubt they are your best choice. That area is perfect for me because of my high DS, and I basically just love tap the mtks until they froth before beating the shit out of them. Might I suggest Thantoph? I imagine you would have an easier/faster time there.

Not sure how well I would do in massive troll kings. I went there real quick just to check it out and the very first one to attack me had a 530 something AS (which I understand is a special attack and not their normal AS.) I don't know if I totally fucked up my training or what but in guarded stance I only have slightly over 400 DS, he only rolled I think a 20 or 30 and ended up doing 50ish points of damage to me. I think they would work my bard over really fast at that rate.

Can anyone give me any tips or anything to look out for if I hunt Illoke mystics and stone mastiffs? Their stats don't look too bad on Krakkiipedia.

These things don't seem too bad so far. What sort of weapon am I supposed to use to skin the mastiffs though? A knife doesn't seem to be cutting it and I'm not getting the messaging that I should be using a blunt weapon.
ETA: Just picked up a mattock from a stone giant and it worked just fine on a mastiff. I'm assuming blunts are the way to go or does it have to be a two handed blunt weapon?

Yeah I've heard mastiffs were pretty squishy for spell casters. I just started getting bounty tasks for them, but haven't yet dove in to expiriment.
Don't have the slightest clue how DS works for a pure bard, but that sounds low to me for that level. My DS with wizard spells and colors is a good bit over 500 at 52, but of course it takes me a little while to kill swinging my ohe sonic at 379 AS currently with my own spells+society+509. I imagine you probably blow shit up dead in a cast or two.

Yeah I was just hunting with my own spells, I'm used to my other characters hunting in the Rift that I forget I can actually hunt with other spells on too. Think I'll try getting blurs and colors as well when hunting there.
The mastiffs are stupidly easy to kill, didn't see too many one shot kills but 2-3 casts were the usual. Stone Giants and mystics I just had to cast lullabye on first so they wouldn't fall on me when they died and they were pretty easy to kill as well.

I've learned that yes mastiffs are better skinned with blunt weapons. I'm roughly 1x survival/first aid and sometimes I can get the hearts to sell for around 1k a piece.
Mastiffs are a pain in the butt for me cause they're very perceptive and are pretty quick with their actions, 5 sec rt usually, and either their skin is like plate or they have natural crit padding. I think they are one of those kinds of critters you can hit with ice and then fire to cause them to crack and do more damage, not 100% on that though.
The falling over from the giants and mystics is a pain, but they are both kind of squishy. Also watch out in that area because shamans can spawn too, and they're usually about 5 levels higher than the mystics. Giants can boil and throw rocks. Mystics and shamans can dispel, boil, and do that first maneuver. I think all of them can also quake.
Personally I like MTK's more because its much simpler hunting, but if you can deal with the spells its probably more fun in the Stronghold.

Screw Stronghold. A pure bard can easily hunt 10 levels over their head. Disrupt the snot out of yetis and dwellers, profit. You'll die to the occasional dweller maneuver, but it's much better than dieing to shaman garbage constantly. This assumes you haven't neglected your defenses. In another few levels you can move up to lesser minos.

There is no profit to be had up on the krag slopes or hidden plateau.

At 10 levels difference there is. Of course that goes away at like level.

Nope, not in that location.

Maybe we're talking apples and oranges. It took me about 3 minutes to fry, or about 7 minutes to finish a bounty, and would walk away with about 5,000 silver on the average solo hunt. Got the occasional nice item as well when group hunting. Mostly in the morning or daytime. I never tried to farm the area for silver in the long term.
Compared with a stronghold hunt where you had to wait for 10 to 30 of a specific creature to generate while burning mana fighting off/dodging mastiffs, giants, mystics or shaman, and pay for 2 or 3 rezzes a day. Yeah, I'd call that a profit.

I was in skull temple at 59 with my pure. Avoid dogmatists for a few trains and you're good to go.
