Okay so I've been hunting OTF/Wyneb/Nelmar for a year now, so I'm very familiar with spell burst. I've been wearing the exact same set of spells in spell burst area for the past 6 months. Today I died in Nelmar from spell burst and I'm not sure why. From the looks of what happened in the log, I'm only assuming it has to do with the enscrollment flares on my weapon.

By the math in the lich script ;burst_calc I should be able to wear 47 mana worth of spells
By my own math I come up with 47.1 mana worth of spells.

So they match.

Based off the death clip below I was wearing:

Strength 9.5 Mana
Deep Blues 3.5 Mana
Silveries .5 Mana
Brights 3 Mana
Dims 2 Mana
Blurs 11.5 Mana
Powerful Look 1.5 Mana
Guards 7 Mana
Thurfels 3 Mana
Light blues .5 mana

By my math that's 42 Mana... so I was 5 mana under my max yet I still burst. The reason I think it may have been related to enscrollment is my weapon has T1 enscrollment flares that activated just before I died, that's also the only thing that's change that is magical that changed for me in the last 6 months.

Thoughts?

Death Clip:

R>
A triton executioner swings a coral-hilted sharply tapered longsword at you!
AS: +433 vs DS: +464 with AvD: +17 + d100 roll: +38 = +24
A clean miss.
>head
You're now aiming at the head of your target when using a ranged weapon, or while ambushing.
>
You are now in an offensive stance.
>
You swing a vicious onyx-handled spikestar at a triton executioner!
AS: +582 vs DS: +331 with AvD: +35 + d100 roll: +9 = +295
... and hit for 92 points of damage!
Solid strike caves the triton executioner's skull in, resulting in instant death!
The triton executioner collapses, gurgling once with a wrathful look on his face before expiring.

** Necrotic energy from your onyx-handled spikestar overflows into you! **

You feel energized!
Roundtime: 6 sec.
R>
You feel recovered from your whirlwind flurry of strikes.
R>
You suddenly feel the essence surrounding you shift and writhe chaotically!
You feel the unnatural surge of necrotic power wane away.
... 60 points of damage!
Electric shock causes a strong enough convulsion to snap your neck.
Your SIGN OF STAUNCHING is no longer effective.
You feel your extra strength departing.
Your SIGN OF DEFLECTION is no longer effective.
The deep blue glow leaves you.
Deep blue motes swirl away from you and fade.
Your SIGN OF SHIELDS is no longer effective.
Your SIGN OF SWORDS is no longer effective.
The silvery luminescence fades from around you.
Your SIGN OF WARDING is no longer effective.
The bright luminescence fades from around you.
Your SIGN OF DEFENDING is no longer effective.
The dim aura fades from around you.
Your SIGN OF STRIKING is no longer effective.
You become solid again.
The powerful look leaves you.
Your SIGN OF SMITING is no longer effective.
The brilliant luminescence fades from around you.
The glowing specks of energy surrounding you suddenly shoot off in all directions, then quickly fade away.
Your SIGN OF DISSIPATION is no longer effective.
The light blue glow leaves you.

It seems you have died, my friend. Although you cannot do anything, you are keenly aware of what is going on around you...

You mentally give a sigh of relief as you remember that the Goddess Lorminstra owes you a favor.

...departing in 13 mins...
DEAD>
You are very dead.
DEAD>
You are a ghost! You must wait until someone resurrects you, or you decay. Either way, it won't be long now! (HELP for more details).
DEAD>
* Lancecile just bit the dust!

It's gotta be the ensorcell flares... Maybe it's a phantom level 35 spell?

Look at the line right after the Spell Burst trigger...
You suddenly feel the essence surrounding you shift and writhe chaotically!
You feel the unnatural surge of necrotic power wane away.

Looks like the flare applies a buff that has a mana cost associated with it.

Ahh yes... I missed that line. From everything I've read on the flares I haven't seen them talk about the wearable mana cost of the spell.

Do we have anyway of testing it out? I posted a trimmed down version of this post on the officials as well hoping to find out more as well.

Probably an unintended side-effect of their coding. I mean, it IS a buff that's placed on the character from the flare. So it needs an effect spell ID... etc...

The best way to test it would be once you get a flare, try using the spell active verb to see what you get, and see if there's anything additional there, and check the spell numbers for the mana cost. It'd make recoding the effect a little easier for the GM/Devs/etc.

I'm fairly certain it'll be classified as a bug though, and remedied in the next few days.

Please post your log on the officials, it seems the "flare" is a buff, hopefully not a 35 mana one!

Either this is a bug or it's going to be hard for most professions to use offensively enscrolled stuff.

My money is on bug or it effectively demolishes this service as desirable for a great many professions.

Spoke with a host... they bugged it, and asked me to bug it. We shall see what happens.

Funny thing is that it probably is an unintended consequence (aka bug), but getting a GM to admit that and fix it is a completely different thing. On the other hand, Coase seems pretty good, so maybe we will get an answer, at least,

Coase is the man. If it is a bug he will nuke it within a day or two of it being acknowledged.
