Horses Released!

What was thought to be the sound of thunder roared from the direction of Whistler's Pass, loud enough to be heard within the gates of Ta'Illistim. A young elven lad quickly dashed out the city's gates expecting a chance to play in the rain. It had not rained in days and he greatly enjoyed waddling about in his smallclothes playing in the mud. When he arrived along Whistler's Pass he noticed not a cloud in the sky. Yet curiously, he noticed fresh tracks through the dirt were hoove-shaped. All of a sudden a feral herd of horses plodded past him in a wild race, nearly trampling him.

Elsewhere in Elanthia very similar events were happening outside various cities and towns.

I am extremely pleased to announce that horses have been released for use within the game.

The MOUNT verb has also been updated to reflect this.

In order to obtain a horse one must first buy a length of rope, now sold in general stores all across Elanthia, and also in smaller outposts. It would also be wise to purchase carrots and apples...

Once a rope is acquired the player must then locate a herd of horses that are randomly genned in appropriate hunting areas. When a herd is found the player must then THROW ROPE AT HERD in order to try and corral a horse for capture. At this point the character's STR and DIS stat will come into affect, and also perception for aiming the rope.

Once roped, the player must then try and MOUNT the horse, which will involve a roll that includes the DEX and AGI stats. A successful mounting will allow the player to sit atop the horse. But that's not all. The player must then urge the horse to be his or her companion for life...until death. INF will greatly play a role in the character's chance to win over the horse.

Now you ask--since you probably have a horse by now--what can you do with your newfound friend?

Horses will be able for use in combat. Most weapons used while riding a horse will have their DF increased by 1.5x. There will also be a little bit higher chance for the foe to evade the attack, which can now be mitigated by the character being more dexterous. Of note, lances have become even more powerful when used from a horse and will now see a 3x increase in their DF.

Not only can horses be used in combat but they can also be used for quick travel throughout the lands. A player may now be able to tell their horse to CHARGE <town> and the horse will dash off in the general direction of the chosen town, moving as if the character were using 25 type-ahead lines to move from room to room. Be forewarned however: HORSES CAN DROWN.

Horses will also require a daily upkeep. One cannot just leave their horse standing around in the open when they decide to log off for the night. A horse must be taken to a local stable, now located in every town and outpost, and a fee must be paid for the night. But fear not, fees can be prepaid for a year at a time and there are several tiers of upkeep fees depending on how well you want your horse kept. Be forewarned: Being cheap with your horse is likely cause for a stableboy to accidentally kill it or steal it.

I'd like to thank all the helpers in the design and implementation of this. Great thought and lots of planning went into this release. I'd also love to give my immeasurable thanks to today's date, for which without it horses would still be hidden.
