View Full Version : Guilt is a wonderful thing...

My wife is quitting her "job" after 5 years to become a nanny for some friends of ours and their newborn daughter. She's going to be making more money, saving on milage, tolls and clothing... and she feels guilty about it.

So guilty in fact that she's going to order Direct TV NFL Ticket!!!!!!!!!

But now I have a problem.. I have 4 tvs (No, I don't live in some mansion.. but I have a TV in the bedroom, front room, den and my computer) and now it seems I have to get 4 damn converters from Direct TV (costing $4.99 each per month)

I need to strike while the 'guilt' is still there and before she realizes she shouldn't feel guilty.. but I certainly don't want to pay more than I do right now for cable.. so anyone have it out there? I know they offer great packages for new subscribers.

Looking for the best deal... last thing I want to feel is guilty ;)

That's the problem with DirectTV.

I have cable, so I'm sure I'll be bias.

I pay for one HD cable box, which I have downstairs.

Free with installation was the hook up of 4 other rooms (2 guest rooms, living room, bedroom). Basic cable (stations 1-100) which come in crystal clear and is all we need upstairs.

<reads on directtv's site to help you out>

Did you realize that each receiver needs to be hooked up to a phone line for billing reasons? They do say something about a "wireless phone jack". I'd have to read more.

Ouch, another:

I have two receivers. Can I order a pay per view movie on one receiver and watch it on both TVs in my house?
No. Each pay per view order is specific to the receiver on which it is ordered. When you place a pay per view order, the receiver on which you placed the order begins displaying the signal, "authorizes you for the purchase" and stores the record of your purchase on the access card in the receiver.

Do you know if they carry all of the local stations in your area? The site says it might be an issue.

Shit.. I didn't read the whole having to have each receiver hooked up to the phone line.

God damn.. I JUST WANT THE NFL TICKET DAMMIT!! Why can't the cable companies give me that??

Damn... maybe just NFL ticket on one tv then... :(

I'm as shocked as you are Chelle! But then again I found someone brave enough to marry me so it could happen to anyone.

All in all it sounds like a great strategy... wonder what opportunities might arise that I can squeeze some Astros season tickets for next year...

PS. And congrats on the big 12 PB... it will be 11 for me this Aug, and here I was feeling like an old fart reading these boards... I feel young again!

My buddy had DirectTV and he just unhooked the phone line and was able to split it to all his tvs and get free pay per view. I'm sure they fixed that by now cause it was a couple years ago. but its worth a shot

you only need to have the phone line hooked up to order the pay per view stuff, otherwise i leave mine unplugged......but I have dish network, only assuming they are similar

I don't know if Direct TV is like Dish Network, but we've got five TVs hooked up to three receivers. All we did was tell them which sets to connect and they hooked it up for us. It was really easy. So if you can only afford two, just choose which two or three tvs would be "yours" to watch your games on and leave another for your wife so she doesn't have to watch that God-awful NFL crap.

oh, and we've never plugged ours into our phone line. we watch all of our porn online. duh.

Well... I spoke to Direct TV and this is what they said...

I can get the 1st 4 months for $72.23 plus all sorts of taxes and that will get me the NFL Ticket, all the premium channels and 3 receivers. After that it's $49.97 a month for 8 months because you need to sign up for 12 months.

Damn... I currently pay $44.95 for my cable.. and all I want is the damn NFL Ticket. I would gladly pay $200 for the 4 months.. but they don't do that.

Fuckers.

That's damned expensive. I like football, but not that much!

Yea.. but I don't do anything else.

I don't drink (excessively) I don't go to bars that often

I don't have any expensive habits.. except Gemstoned

I have a membership to the YMCA, but it's only $11.50 a month (Love the family plan at work)

It's not the money.. it's the fact that they have a monopoly over it and they stick it to me for 12 months when I really only want 4 months of their service. I hate feeling like I am being taken. :(

Yah, I tried to get direct TV once, Free installation, free recievers and a really nice plan at the time, with a 12 month contract.

They get here and since I live in a townhouse, oh yeah... if will cost you an extra $200.00 for us to install it here because we have to drill a hole in your floor. Fuckers, I told them to leave. :fu:

I tried Direct TV with the 12 month contract plan, free installation, receivers, the works. The thing I like about using Direct TV is that you can go to their website and change your plan right on the spot. It takes about 15 minutes or so for the information to be sent to your receiver. The only downside was having to remove chunks off ice from off of the satellite in the winter. I only had reception problems about 4 times during the year. The plans can be pretty expensive but then again so is Digital cable.

I pay about $90 for my cable.

That's $40 for my cable internet.
and about $50 for my High Def box, Digital cable, and one of the tiers that gives you 10 movie channels - mostly Encore channels and some independant movie channels(it was cheap).

Plus my 3 bedrooms and living room all have free cable - which is basically all the stations I have except for Encore, High Def, Digital Music, & some other crappy stations.

BTW, flipping back and forth between ABC and ABCHD last night during the redskins game was incredible. ABC looked so grainy and nasty. ABCHD was crystal clear, widescreen, and the sound was so much clearer (going through the surround sound). And the Skins won. What more could I ask for?
