View Full Version : Re-opening my account

Hello all, I've been getting the itch lately to play GS again after I don't know.... 8 years or so. So I'm going to re-open the old account. How are things as of late? I realize the population of the realms is probably a tenth of what it once was, and most if not all of my old friends are long gone. Nonetheless, I'm still kind of excited to get back into it but I know I've also forgotten so much. I apologize in advance for any glaring noobness as I'm sure I'll have more questions in the near future.
The real question on my mind right now is:
Which Front End is generally accepted as being better these days? I was so hooked to the Wizard that when Stormfront came out I didn't give it the time of day. Any major changes to either? I figure since now it will be almost like playing a new game it would be a good opportunity to break from my Wizard habit if there were any real advantages to do so.
Plan on using this Lich doo-dad too if that makes any difference.

Hey now. I still use the wizard and hunt manually, which probably leaves me in the minority. I do use lich though and it great.
During the day and night there usually 350-450 on. Most people have multiple accounts so take the numbers with a grain f salt.
I have fun. Been playing for years. Black swan is an event going on now and the new Coraesine field event will be happening this summer.

Neat. I do plan to hunt manually, so the hunting scripts aren't really my thing, unless its something super tedious like actually using crossbows, as I remember them. Even then, just small scripts to do things like arming the thing, kneeling...etc etc etc
I am however very interested in the map, travel, and other quality of life script functions of Lich that have been reading about. On that topic was just wondering what front end was generally accepted as being better. I guess it doesn't really matter much in the end, much like it was 8 years ago :D
I have been lurking on these boards for the last few weeks or so and I have read a bit about Black Swan, seems neat, but my level of expertise at playing at the moment would probably hinder my group more than anything. Coraesine field seems cool. Last big merchant event I remember going to was Revel at Anfelt? Think that was the name, I won one of those raffles and got one of the elemental crossbows. Though I'm starting to remember now going to one of the Ebon Gates after that.

Welcome back brother! Make sure you let us know who you'll be running around on.
I'm sure you heard Monks were finally released, after 14 years....
I enjoy stormfront and haven't really felt the need to return to wizard. I did give it ago the other day and I just love the functionality on SF a little better. I know there are pros and cons but I didn't want to take the time setting up something that just didn't feel right after so many years,
The community is smaller but we are tightly knit. It's a lot of fun and I am usually running one or two of four characters on two accounts.
The big plus to the smaller population is that it is much easier to get involved in story lines where as before it was almost as much of a crap shoot as getting padding on something.

I never click but I do like being able to highlight names and words. Can you do that with Wizard? I forget. I do love how the wizard has the intro music. There is a command you can type in SF to make the music play whenever you want but I forget what it is :(

I used to think the same of SF, but moved over a while back and prefer it now. There's no need to click anything, but the object highlighting (clickable links) really makes scanning a room for things easy. I also prefer the full color palette that the Wizard just doesn't have. The wizard is also absolutely horrible for multi-accounting if you have different layouts and/or window sizes, which SF handles fine. The big downside to SF, for me (being logged in constantly in Shattered), is the memory leak. A freshly rebooted computer seems to be able to go for a couple days or so before the crashes start kicking in bad, but after that you're lucky to get 24 hours in.

So you're saying as someone who doesn't typically reboot his computer very often would be better off just going with the Wizard?

Thanks! Probably be mostly running around on my rogue uh...Kalishar. lol
Kinda contemplated migrating a few utility type characters to a second account to support my main but still largely undecided on it.
As for being able to be involved in story lines, that sounds great. Was actually pretty tough to get in on that sort of thing when I was playing pretty regularly.

I hardly ever reboot my computer, and SF works fine. It is when you leave SF running non-stop for days that you run into issues (like in GS Shattered).
I also prefer SF for the quick scanning of rooms. The links are very helpful in that sense. The only time I ever click on a link is with an NPC to see what the options are for asking them questions and such. In addition, if you connect in from multiple computers, SF stores your highlights and macros on the server side, so they travel with you.

SF links are super helpful especially in newly designed and merchant rooms where they'll have partitions in a different trays on multiple shelves and stuff is in the partition and you don't want to keep typing something like "look in left partit in red tray on top shelf"
also, don't get bogged down by the initial look of SF when you first open it, it's awful, but you can customize it fairly easily. download uberbar in Lich and you can close most of the windows. Click on the disk icon next to any window name to log that window on an ongoing basis. Read through the preference list very carefully, I highly recommend unchecking the one that automatically lists everything in your container in the container window, even if you close that window.

Yeah, it seems broken, though. I have puke yellow shit everywhere and I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out how my old highlight files got corrupted. It seems a good bit of the things it's highlighting aren't actually objects. Would be nice to disable it, but I'm afk more often than not, so I can live with it.
One of my other gripes with the wizard, which I sorta forgot, is that it's horrible for auto-logging even a single account. Toss multiple accounts into the mix and it's a fuckin mess (as in, you're going to be starting and naming the logs manually anyway so they may as well take their 'auto-log' option and jam it somewhere dark and stanky).

I've been bored of games for a while now.. so bored in fact I'm going to reactivate an account.
Lich wasn't around when I played regularly, so going to give that a try. I used to be a "Wizard only" kind of guy.. but I think I'll give Stormfront a try.
I've been reading about the installation needs.. so I need Lich, Ruby and Game entry? That's it?

Yep. Just follow the steps outlined here: http://lichproject.com/download.html
If certain commands like any involving the ; symbol (;unpause for example) don't seem to do anything, log out and back in and see if that helps. I've had to do that every time I messed with lich. Also, I would suggest setting lich to have clearance to allow access outside information, or whatever the box is. The program doesn't seem to function properly without it.

I think I finally got it to work. I was in EN.. and ;go2 landing worked like a charm (except I didn't have enough silvers on me, so I had to turn the auto get silvers on, go back to EN, go to bank, then go to landing...)
I'm playing my old archer.. is there scripting for hunting crossbows already done or do I need to make one? I no longer have any of my old scripts (that was 8-9 computers ago)..

Quick n00b question:
According to my profile full, I am a member of the House of Paupers... but when I go through the arch in Icemule and try to go into the locker room, it says my locker isn't here.
Does that mean I have to access my locker in the Landing.. or is something goofed up from being on ice for so long?

There's no built in highlight in the Wizard. I manually added highlights for all the abnormal exist (stairs, doors, etc.) and all that over the years, which has pretty much the same effect.
I keep meaning to try out StormFront, but I never feel like dealing with the hassle of figuring out how to import all my Wizard settings over.....highlights, macros, sound strings, etc.

Oh yeah. Next time I have a big enough block of time and a bunch of beer, I'll do that.
The real attraction is the sounds though, not so much the highlights, even though I have 49823947290472904728390 of them too. It would likely take several weeks/months worth of "regular" gameplay to hear all the sounds I have set up.
