Ok, I'm probably the only person in the universe who doesn't currently have a cell phone. However, I will need to get one as soon as I move. Does anyone have any advice on which service is the best? Currently I'm leaning towards T-Mobile since they seem to have the best plan for the price (600 anytime, night/weekend for 39.99, no roaming, good coverage area). I will most likely be moving near Baltimore.

I have T-mobile oo. But have to checked out Cingular? I heard they have basically the same plan that you posted, except hey have roll over minutes as well.

I don't know about T-Mobile, but every person I talk to on cell phones in the Baltimore area (work related) either have Nextel (which isn't all that great) or Verizon.

Looking at the coverage maps on T-Mobile.com, it definitely looks as if it has good coverage of all of Maryland.

I like my nextel

I heard T-mobile sucks. A couple people I know HAD it and hated it. I had Cingular, they suck, I had Sprint, they suck hard. I've had Verizon for a couple years now, it's great. I was going to get Nextel a while ago. But, after I saw my ex's and his family's bill, I passed. Unless you know a lot of people that own Nextel so you can walkie talkie them, it's good. But, if you don't, just get a regular cellie.

Why do they suck, and why is Verizon great?

I have no idea hon. I've never had T-Mobile. Just a couple of my friends had it and they didn't like it. I like Verizon, cos they've been the only plan so far that hasn't fucked up my bill.

I can't find my cell phone :(

I've never used any service other than Verizon and have no complaints.

Me too.

Although I would have to say the two-way direct connect would be kind of wasted if I didn't use it for work.

Not many of my friends have nextels.

I've had Cingular for 5 years now and I am quite happy with it. I get free long distance, rollover minutes and I don't have too much problem getting service at any given time.

I have UScellular which is probably last on the list of really good cell phone companies. I have an unlimited local/ld plan which is the only reason I've stayed with them. My girlfriend has t-mobile which she loves. They offer some pretty versatile plans. I heard somewhere that Verizon had the largest coverage area...not sure.

Verizon has reception like everywhere. In the middle of the mall I have amazing reception. But it's a bit more expensive.

I have Verizon...I find I have a problem with that "changing service area" crap on my phone. It's a fairly recent thing, but if it keeps up I'm considering switching to Cingular.

I've gone through them all. I started off with Sprint, which was horrific, then onto Cingular, which was only slightly better, then to Voicestream (which I guess is T-Mobile now), and finally I've settled on Verizon. I didn't even touch Nextel beause those walkie talkie phones are FUCKING ANNOYING. I don't want people to hear my conversations nor do I want to hear anyone elses. I've never heard anyone complain about Verizon, except for maybe that their customer service department sucks, which it does. Verizon is very expensive, and you need good credit, but it is worth it. They have a shitty selection of phones but I don't care what my phone does so long as it rings and I can talk on it.

I despise the walkie-talkie crap. Don't get that! I have Cingular, and have no complaints at all.

Most people don't realize you can put the walkie talkie on private if you're in a crowded area. You still click it and all it just turns off the speaker phone and puts it to the regular earpiece.

It's just the clowns who keep it on full volume everywhere. (Read: My cousin)

Yeah you can put it on private. I found that out when my ex use to do that everytime this certain girl use to page him on it. :flamed:

My girl just bought this phone and we changed to a T-mobile family plan. Motorola V300 (click me) (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/-/wireless/B0000WZWSI/glance/qid=1091982776/br=1-1/ref=br_lf_w_1/102-8606658-9783316) Her phone is kick ass - built in camera & you get to send free pictures for a year (then I think you can add something to the plan for free pictures). The phone is actually free (The phone costs $50, and they actually send you a check for $150 after you sign up for T-mobile and send the rebates). To get the rebates you just need to sign up for a $39.99 or higher plan - which is their 600 minutes, free nights & weekends, free long distance, free roaming, Voice mail, caller-id, etc.

And from what I've seen - Amazon has the best offers anywhere.

And for accessories - (no bias here  ) Check the 1st link (and use the coupon codes) (http://members.cox.net/legendwezas/DOTW.htm)

as far as cell phones go its going to be on a per user basis... if a person buys one phone and doesnt use it much they will be unlikely to ever have issues and probably claim that company as the best ever. It also depends on what features your wanting to use with your phone because all you mentioned was voice plans but if your like most users a voiceplan wont be enough after a few months and you'll want to play with the new toys such as high speed wireless data and pictures and video and the such in which case you have to start looking at what the different companies provide in that area. One thing to keep in mind is currently Verizon and Sprint are CDMA markets and dont have any public plans about upgradeing where most of the TDMA players such as Cingular and whatnot are currently upgradeing to GSM which is the future for Cellular. That all being said I've worked for several different Cell companies as phone technition and currently work for Sprint so if your wanting personal opinions ... Cingular's billing is a nightmare at times and is almost impossible to fix if they misbill you, USCell has great plans but poor coverage and poor web services, Sprint is uh ... I like Samsung phones and Sprints web service is very very good and Ill leave it at that. And last but not least T-Mobile has Zeta as their commerical whore ... cant beat that.

Verizon has bad cell phones? I always thought the LG's were some of the best phones you can buy. I have an LG 7000, it's the best phone I've ever owned.

You can also go with prepaid through AT&T with weekends and evenings free, 800 min for 69 a month.

So I was in the middle of no where. My phone worked in the middle of no where. My man's best-friend has Nextel. Guess who's cell worked and who's cell didn't get any reception. Mines worked. Moral of the story? For all the money he pays (actually his parents, cos he's a rich Jewish kid from Upstate NY), he loses and I win, cos Verizon is teh bomb.

My ex inlaws had singular and hated it. Hated the service, crappy connections, the whole bit. I've had Verizon since day 1, and I'll agree about the connections. Outstanding. I got service in the middle of a trade show hall, in a hotel in Vegas when 2 of my coworkers had to go outside to get a signal. Their prices are a bit higher, but I GET MY CALLS! And the only problems I've ever had have been fixed quickly, and sometimes with added bonuses (read: I'm sorry our store manager is an idiot, Miriam.. let me credit you back $125 for that $99 phone you bought when you didn't have to.).
