View Full Version : Why armor training?

Some guides and a lot of training plans indicate that a wizard should train at least twice in armor training fo full leathers. But according to play.net, full leather is ASG six and thus has no hindrances. So then why do I need to train in it at all? It's darn expensive.

Possibly because the guides are old, or because of maneuver hinderance.

Full leather = 4 ranks.

For being trained for it. Just like full plate takes 140, full leather takes 4.

And 'trained for it' means what for a wizard? I thought the RT penalty only applies to swinging a weapon. And there being no spell hindrance, what exactly do I gain?

As a wizard, you only need 2 ranks to wear full leather.

Man. penalty. Gives you a slight edge when dodging. Doesn't really matter for fulls since it's a) Full leather and 2) You're a wizard you won't dodge shit unless you're a naked halfling.

Things like getting up from a prone position, wearing or removing the armor.
From what I have heard on the boards, it is 4 ranks to train off ALL penalties associated with full leather.
Getting these ranks will give you a slight advantage, or rather remove the slight disadvantage the armor gives you, when facing maneuver attacks.

Armor doesn't change for professions, unfortunately. It's 4 for everyone.

Don't different profs have different hiderances or is it the different spell circles have different hinderances?

Yes, spell hinderance. Not action/manuever penalty. It's 4 ranks for every profession.

What Jonty said, and spell hinderance is by circle, not profession.

Also, if all you're concerned about is spell hinderance then you don't need any ranks.... The spell hinderance on full leather is zero for all spell circles.

Bob, I didn't want to bump an older topic but had an armour question. You said in another post that if you take 7 damage in scale armour you'll receive a wound, do you know what the numbers are for the other types? I ask because one of my guys just took 5 damage in soft leather with no wound, so it's either gotta be 6 or 7.
Any idea about chain and plate?

Skin: 3
Leather: 5
Scale: 7
Chain: 9
Plate: 11
You take the raw damage, divide it by that number, that's the crit rank. This works for players only, I forget how the creature mechanics work. It doesn't round, either. 54.999999 raw damage in plate is still rank 4. Then you can get a 2-4 rank crit because of crit randomization.

It's used to be no more than a crit divisor of 5 for critters. I'm not sure if that was changed for GS4, though.

Is that the most damage you can take without getting an injury?
I ask because:
A giant rat tries to bite you!
AS: +34 vs DS: +54 with AvD: +34 + d100 roll: +99 = +113
... and hits for 5 points of damage!
Weak slash across chest!
Slightly less painful than heartburn.
Didn't give me a wound, in fulls.

I'm not sure if a rank 1 crit is an automatic injury.

<< Armor doesn't change for professions >>
No shit.
As a wizard, your dex/ref bonus is most likely enough to reduce the RT modifier. No spell hinderance at all in fulls so you should be fine w/ no more than 2 ranks.

Sorry, you don't get stat modifiers for professions either.

I said nothing about fucking profession stat modifiers. As a wiz your dex is normally decent for these things called bolt spells.
Every +15 in your combined dex/ref BONUS gives you a -1 sec to RT penalty. This does not affect spell hinderance.

FYI see Tsoran's posts here about why you need 4 ATs to fully train full leather (which confirms what has been stated above):
