I have a Kindle Paperwhite and love it. Backlit, lasts forever, and I think it is within your price range.

you can buy a used kindle fire (non-HD, no offers) for about $115 on amazon. Side-loading apps not available on the Amazon app store is easy

I should have added - if you want something that has web browser access and also plays video as well as acting as an e-reader, the Kindle Fire is probably more appropriate. I like just having a single device dedicated to reading books for when I travel, so that's why I choose to have the the Paperwhite over the Fire. Pk has a Fire and likes it a lot, I think, so you may want to solicit his opinion on that.

Yeah I basically want one I can preload with a lot of books at home. Web browsing and videos won't be used. It's going to be for when I'm at sea for a few weeks on end with no easily available Internet.

I totally recommend the kindle fire. Preload that little fucker with books (wh40k,) magazines, pictures, videos, games, audio books, music, porn, erotic stories written by your girlfriend. You name it. Do it!

I love my Kindle Fire. I have tons of papers on it but not many books. I prefer actual books, but when traveling, it's nice to just carry the Kindle. I've played a few games on it, but usually just use it for reading papers.

I would strongly recommend a Nexus 7 or 10 over a Kindle Fire, but the e-ink Kindle is probably the best among e-ink devices.
