I was at the pool a few miles from my house. I call her and I'm like "did u really just text me about GS" and she's all "STUNSEED TOLD ME TO" and I'm like "rofl".

I get off the phone and my friends are all "What was that about" and I'm like "NOTHING" and then I go home "to eat" which really meant "Hunt the blighted forest with Stun".

God I'm a nerd.

Sounds like that one commercial for the online game, can't remember I think it was xbox. They were all like let's get the team together and everyone logs in to kill some dragon...

At least on Xbox you can see the dragon.

Ever tried explaining GS to your friends?

Don't.

I used to call in sick to work so i can play GS. My roommate at the time "Frostravin" also did this several times. Then we had a all day event of playing GS where we got several people that played to call in and play, Surgla, Deathravin, Frostravin and me. Was addicted for a while. Then i liberated my self from the confines of a text game.

I would never call in sick to play GS just because I know I would get my ass beat by my boss for calling out. Only once did I call out of school for it but school literally didn't matter at that point. The only time I wanted to call out of work was the first night of Ebons gate (I had never gone to it before) and I got out at 9 but when I got out of work the gate still wasn't open till 10 so it was fine.

Oh I have to admit though that I have called out of school to finish a book.

I used to be able to play GS while at work. Now, I'm lucky if I find time to play it while I'm at home.

I used to try to tell my friend about GS, back in the day when I was addicted to it and played for 16 hours a day, and she would look at me like I was crazy.

The only person I can semi-relate the game to is a fellow co-worker who is into the whole RPG thing as well. He plays graphic games and can't understand why I'm still stuck in text based...but we have a few good conversations with regards to our respective games.

Well first, I'm a closet GS'er freak. NONE of my friends know I do this, basically because none of them would understand, and I don't think they'd ever stop laughing. My family knows, basically because they all play various computer games too. My mom would like to get into it, but she thinks she would have a hard time understanding all the mechanics.

And of course, boyfriend hates it. He knows I'm a total geek for reasons outside GS but then again, he's a geek for reasons outside playing on computers that makes him one.

Worst I've done for a game? I ditch school a lot, but its pretty easy to catch up on what you missed in college. I haven't missed work, I just can't justify it.

One time though, my boyfriend and I got into a big fight (don't even remember what it was about!) Anyway, I was crying and he was apologising and right at the end I weasled in the fact I was taking off the whole weekend to go to Ebon's gate (my first time) and he was totally cool with it cause he felt guilty.

I'm going to hell. :(

I only told my friends about it when I first started playing in like 7th or 8th grade. Me and my other friend played, the rest of them didn't. Upon telling them about it my one wigger friend entered the game as the one and only Tupac the dwarf warrior.

Needless to say I haven't bothered telling any of my friends about it after that.

Heh, my friends in high school never got the appeal of a text-based game. In college the friends I used to hang out with played D & D, and had a much higher respect for the world of Gemstone. Mechanics were a bit much for them, though.

Also, Tayre has BEGGED me to move to EN to hunt Blighted Forest with him multiple times. So I finally have a reason to head out to EN and both Tayre and Anticor ditch me. Not like I have a reason to go there anymore, so it looks like Stunseed will be in Pinefar for the duration of it all.

I used to have a couple of RL friends that played, but they've moved away or been shipped out in the military. The rest of my friends are complete geeks, they just aren't geeky in quite the same way.

They don't understand why, but they know that sometimes I'll spend a weekend or a week (for big events) in the computer room and that I become very irritable and anti-social when it happens. All I need to say is, "It's a GS weekend" or "It's a merchant thing" and they don't ask any more questions and just leave me alone.

It's nice to have understanding friends.

Ah the pro's of working in a computer company with other geeks.

No one else plays Gemstone other than myself, however, three others were familiar with the concept as they had tried some other Simu game. Three people here are playing Kingdom of Loathing, three others go to renn faires, and about a dozen of them have at least one game console at home. Not for their kids.. for themselves.

Of course, when the fiance and I go out to dinner, we have to tone down our game conversations because once we get going on the talks of killing shan, finding loot, stealing coins, having a katana altered and the like, we get a lot of funny glances.

I remember when my ex use to walk in and read the convo's in GS and he was like, WHY THE FUCK IS HE SAYING I LOVE YOU TO YOU!?!?!?!?! RAWRRRRR!!!! Then I'd laugh and be like, I'm the mack bish, get off my nuts. I use to play a lot though, most times I did it to annoy my ex.

Tried to get my daughter to try it a couple of times and she absolutely refuses. Even when one of her boyfriends played EQ, I was FORBIDDEN from bringing up computer games to him until she had dated him several months. Even then, he was so hooked on graphic games that we only could sort of relate.

The rest of the family just thinks I'm odd. Only one of my sisters kind of gets it because we used to be in the same D&D group (she refuses to try GS). I had a friend try it. She was really excited about it. Unfortunately, she was really shy in game and that coupled with the fact that she isn't a very good typist plus she had usually had had a couple of drinks made it too difficult for her. She would always forget what she had to do. One good thing I will say for her. She never went OOC. EVER. I pounded that into her head before she ever signed up. Whisper was her friend. She quit last month. I had to strip her character down and cancel for her because she couldn't remember her password.<stare>

Sometimes I miss that rush of excitement that I had when I started GS. I haven't played much this summer... so I'm over the 'I can't do this because of GS' phase. I can't say I'm not playing because of anything in GS. I've just been playing The Lands of Light and Darkness. I haven't pulled any all nighters yet with that one.

I thnk it's pretty bad when you talk to someone OOC about people IG and use their IG names...especially when you know their RL names. OR you try to use RL names and the people you talk to don't know who the hell you are talking about until you refer to their IG name.

I can't figure out which is worse.

I'm also a closet GSer. My friends barely know how to operate AIM... it'd be easier to explain it to my dog.

One time they did learn I play "a game" because I was having a party here and two of my friends got on AIM. They were IMing people on my buddy list and started asking me why people referred to me as "Gerb" and "Snapp."

08-06-2004, 10:25 PM
Heh, I still remember when one of my buddies lil brothers IMed snapp.

"Hey, dee who the fuck is snappleboyy and what kinda queer name is that"

"Uh, this dude i play video games with why?"

"Cause hes talking to me on your aol"

"Oh shit.."

Yeah, not a single one of my friends knows I play Gemstone. Most of my life I've had to stay up to odd hours of the night to play when everyone else was asleep. It's a lot easier to go on 5 hours sleep than it is to explain what Gemstone is to a normal person.

I've sold many thousands of dollars worth of characters and equipment, and explaining THAT was the hardest part. I had to lie and say baseball cards. When they say they've never seen them, I just say yeah cause they're valuable so I lock them up. I r sad. :nutty:

Another sign that you play too much GS is what Snapp just hit on...someone calls you by your game name IRL and it doesn't bother you one bit.

08-06-2004, 11:17 PM
Eh...I don't feel like a loser calling anyone by their real name. I'd rather know your real name, so I don't look like a crack head IMing you. Like would I ever be like, "Sup Yarans", to D? Hells no. I like calling him Daniel/D. Like I like IMing the majority of the people I've befriended in GS by their first name. I actually think the people I've met in GS are saner than my RL friends, rofl. Yeah but my friends think it's weird that I play a game with a bunch of words. They're like, "You can read all that shit?"

Thats exactly when I realized I was playing too much. When I would blow off social events to sit at home alone in front of a computer.

Real life adventures are far more fun for me now than text games.

Don't think I'm bagging text or any other type of game. Lord knows I've put my time in... and can appreciate what I learned.

Actually I think there are two ways to know when you truly need to cut the cord.

One is when you can barely pay the rent (substitiute with electric bills, heating, etc) because of your monthly GS charge and you'll make sure you pay the GS bill first.

And two when you eat ramen noodles for a month to save money on groceries so you can but a ticket to a game event.

I too am a (mostly) closet GS player. Anyway I gave my SN out to some guy I had met in game, probably before I should have because I didn't know him that well. Well it turns out he's 16 IRL and kinda annoying. Anyway in my AIM profile I quote one of my friends saying something to me, and he asked who it was and I told him her name and asked him why he wanted to know. Well anyway, next time she signed on he IMed her! She was all like "wtf, mate?" and I had no idea how to explain it, I was so mortified. I just told her it was some guy I had met in "some game" and that he was crazy, but it was a bit annoying to be sure.

Some of my friend's think I'm insane, others roll their eyes, and a few have rolled up chars. Yet I have no buddy points!! Evil SIMU.

Luckily my husband is totally supportive of me playing. He knows its my stress reliever escape from reality.

Though I have gotten into shit when a friend comes over and I'm like, Can't talk! being swarmed! and their like WTF?

I figured out I played too much a few years ago. I would get up in the morning, warm up the espresso machine, kiss the wife goodbye, get the eldest daughter to the bus and then spend the next 6 hours with a 2year old in my lap trained to hit the enter when I would say "kill the banshee".

I had the word "falls" highlighted red on blue, and she would bounce when she saw that color scheme.

Since my realization, I've done so much outside of the game that I amaze myself some times.

Now when I'm playing a game the wife asks what dork game I'm playing now. Or, if I'm talking to friends, is that one of your game geek friends?

I only respond with "Don't you have some sappy Buffy the Vampire Slayer convention to go to fan girl?"

I never told anyone about my addiction through high school. I would skip days (mom always had my back, so I'd just tell her I didn't want to go) and play DR all day. Switched to GS after college, played it for my first two years. Got shitty grades. Quit for two years and got awesome grades (3.0+).

Then I got the email from Melissa telling me about GS4!. I ignored it for a while but the old smack addiction made me start to read the boards, unofficial and official.

I was at my girlfriends apartment and reading the boards at the time and she asked me what it was, because she had seen me doing it before. I explained it to her (first person in my life I had ever told) and she called me a loser and made fun of me for about a week straight.

It was one of the most painful experiences in my life.

On a happy note, I dumped her and screwed her friend, now she doesn't talk to me anymore. HAH.

That's really cute and funny in a GS nerd sort of way. Could she say 'kill the banshee' too?<grin>

I couldn't even get my daughter to watch but of course she was 11 when I started playing so it was BORING. (we had Webtv and Playstation which were her addictions until she got her own computer)

I also have people go (as the screen scrolls past)... you're reading all that? They just don't get it I've discovered. Screen scroll was a big reason my friend quit.
