Well, since he is a *white* Hispanic ... there will not be any protests when/if he comes to the U.S., right?

I wonder as to what extent that was a consideration, considering how much $$ donations that the Church depends on that is raised in the U.S. (see reference in other Church-related thread).

Bergoglio is known for modernizing an Argentine church that had been among the most conservative in Latin America.

Even the name Francis, a saint who gave up his vast wealth to serve the poor as a poor man. This could be exciting shit.

edit:

Allen described the name of Pope Francis as "the most stunning" choice and "precedent shattering."

"There are cornerstone figures in Catholicism" such as St. Francis, Allen said. Figures of such stature as St. Francis seem "irrepeatable -- that there can be only one Francis," he added.

The name symbolizes "poverty, humility, simplicity and rebuilding the Catholic Church," Allen said.

"The new pope is sending a signal that this will not be business as usual," he said.

You do realize he isnt hispanic in any way shape or form right? His parents were italian immigrants to Argentina, So in effect he's just another italian pope, thankfully he's a total vatican outsider, seriously need change there. Also I love the fact that he took abus to work, how many other cardinals do you think do that?

He is just as Argentine as anyone can be I guess. I mean, he was born and grew up there and that is probably most of what he knows, but by blood he is pure Italian. Obviously the Vatican played it safe with him, they picked a guy from South America, which shows they were looking at change, but they picked a guy that was white.

I don't know what you guys think Argentines look like but they are all Italian, Spain-ish, and German immigrants and they generally didn't have relations with native people so they are pretty much all "white" (unlike Brazillians which run the gamut from lily-white to black). This guy is just as Argentine as anyone else in the country.
