I'm no expert in basketball but with less than 2 seconds to go couldn't that guy in white just have held onto the ball until the clock ran out? Seems kind of silly to pass it when he could have just held it and won the game.

Awesome play though. Watched the shot a few times and could have sworn he threw the ball after time ran out but I kept pausing and replaying it and he shot it literally at the last millisecond.

He totally could have. That's his fault, though, blame is really on the whole team for letting it be that close to begin with.
