I feel like I should know this already, but can defenders be enchanted via mages?

Unfortunately not.

PP or merchant enchantable only. And the only part that can be enchanted by PP is the AS portion. At CCF however, there will be an echanting service that will enchant the defender part of a weapon as well.

Was this announced? I must have missed it.

Hmm.. I think this is wrong. I may be wrong, but I remember reading that defender weapons or weapons with a split is as/ds could be enchanted via PP's but the enchant is split between the two. Course that could just be zelnorn, but I could have sworn also for other weapons.

I think you may be thinking about the TD enchanting. They haven't actually mentioned any enchanting at all yet.

That's only zelnorn that gets split. "Normal" defender weapons can only have the AS (and in the case of TD armor, the DS portion) boosted via points/ 'standard' merchant.

Maybe I am thinking of the TD enchanting. If so than I apologize. I know that I read about some form of enchanting at CCF that involved either TD or the defender portion of weapons. I'm inclined to think both, though.

There's a big difference, service wise, between TD and defender. It would be a separate service if it was offered.

Weapons (including bows) with any amount of weighting or sighting
TD/DB weapons such as defenders, and enchants may be applied to defense bonus

That's from the last CCF according to http://www.nilandia.com/merchants/ccf09.htm. Extraordinary enchanting service, major win. May or not be at the one coming up.
