Isabelle pwned. I was out of school for a week, went in to school an hour late for the week after that, and lost cable/power for about 24 hours.

I personally love hurricanes. But I happen to love storms and reading in them and stuff.

Never been near one, this will be an experience for me, since I'm afraid of storms. And a hurricane is basically just ONE GREAT BIG FUCKING STORM.

Hurricane Floyd was the shit. We got off of school and played football in it.

They're not that bad. At least Isabelle, it was mostly wind. It was cool to just stand outside and watch the clouds fly by.

I was on vacation in Maryland during one. The water was basically up to the ocean front hotels and if you walked inbetween two hotel buildings right by the beach it felt like the wind could almost pick you up. Seriously Maimara you should enjoy it cause they're so wild it's exciting almost. It's like watching a movie!

I was terafied of them before I moved to Va. Now its just kinda like eh, I dont care. I live far enough inland we get wind and rain and lose power but thats about it. Although Isabel did fuck us up for like a week with no power.

You should move to the suburbs in Chesterfield. We get power back first (or possibly second, right after Richmond.)

Hurricanes are horrible. They're not as bad the more north you are.

Living in Miami during Hurricane Andrew was heart-wrenching. Hearing the howling wind outside, the crunching of the houses next door, the ripping of the roof tiles flying off, windows upstairs shattering, barely glancing outside long enough to see sheds flying by. Its not pretty at all when you're in the heart of it. Friends of mine ended up with just a shell of a house. They kept hiding from room to room as their roof was ripped off from above.

Okay, reliving that was not fun.

The pictures of the aftermath of Andrew were amazing: in a horrific 'oh my God' sort of way. The scientists have been talking for years that a really big one is overdue to hit the NY area: much bigger than Gloria was as that weakened by the time it got this far north. Virginia is more likely to get hit hard than NY too, considering how often NC is pounded.

Would you rather have hurricane, or this:

Damn, did I forget to mention that we have hurricanes here, Maimara?

We have the best state.

Where else can you get tornado warnings, hurricane warnings, nasty humidity, heat advisories and crippling snowstorms?

If we had an earthquake or two we'd pwn all other states.

I know you're making a joke about the snowstorms.

You just made me pee my pants laughing. Damn you.

I love storms but wouldn't want to ride out a hurricane. Closest I ever got to one was when I lived north of Houston.

Where we live, it's tornados. Those I don't like! Scary, scary, scary. At least with hurricanes you get a warning.

Vesi

P. S. When I say I love storms I mean the ones where no one is in danger of getting blown away.

Alicia. That was before you were born I believe. I think it was only a category 3 hurricane but I remember we had tons (it seemed like) of tornado warnings with it. And tons of rain.

Also, I have lived with that heat/humidity index you posted. Thank goodness for AC!

Vesi

P. S. Actually, we had gone back to visit relatives at that time. I had already moved from TX to TN now that I think about it.

Edit to add the P. S.

Possibly never (http://www.cnn.com/2004/WEATHER/08/03/alex/).

Seemed like we got some spin off tonight though. Still. Its not as bad as last year. The good thing is... the flora and fauna out here are thick as thieves.

What a Tool! You were supposed to say...

Well you haven't had a good storm if you haven't ridden out hurricane Tayre!

Latrinsorm

What makes that even funnier is the fact that no one (ever) has ridden Hurricane Tayre, except for possibly Tropical Storm Righty.

Um, we get some shitty snow here. Not sure where exactly you're from to compare it to, but it can get pretty nasty.

This past year wasn't bad. The year prior...

You don't know snow.

Artha

You might not count it in feet here, but if there's anywhere near 12 inches, everything stops. Most people get out of school for two or three inches of snow (on the roads). Since I go to school in Petersburg, where they're poor, I get out for like 1 inch.

^^ What Artha said. It's not the amount of snow. It's the fact that it cripples everything around us because people suck at driving in it.

Actually VA doesnt get much snow, but when we have a storm it's usualy an ice storm and everythings covered, power goes out for days, you freeze and start to stink. Gotta love VA.

North Dakota gets the most snow.

Wezas
08-05-2004, 09:42 AM
But people in North Dakota are used to the snow and they can drive in the snow.

The DC area on the other hand shuts down. And now that I have a new car, I'll be one of those people who says "I'll be working from home today" instead of driving around playing in the snow on the way to work.

You really have to move to the suburbs. IF power goes out (and that's a pretty big if), it comes back on in less than a day.

which suburbs? I suppose around Richmond (state capital and all) that might be true but -

I live in Williamsburg

Isabel - power out 17 days
1999 Ice storm - power out 7 days

fortunately I have gas water, gas oven, and a gas dryer - so while the power outage was inconvenient, we didn't ripen.

Now Camille (I grew up outside of Charlottesville) - that was a storm! 2 feet (really) of rain in a day. The little streams turned into walls of water that destroyed trees, homes, anything in their path. I was 11 years old. I remember we got power back for Thanksgiving. The first week or so it was hard to go to sleep because everything smelled so rotten/vile/putrid...

and while my experiences were all difficult, in each of those disasters there were many people who fared far worse than I did.

C/Valthissa (still loves Virginia)

I remember that Ice storm in 99! Was at Christmas too... I got my engagement ring that morning. We had to heat up water on a kerosene (spelling?) heater and shit. Thankfully we have gas hot water heater and stove now, at least we won't starve or stink.

I actually had fun when the power went out last year during the hurricane. was not long before my daughters second birthday so we just gave her her toys early, she got a new one every day to keep her occupied. The heat was bad but we went swinning alot, got out of the house lots, went shopping in a dark store and paid $8.00 a bag for ice that melted in 2 hours. All in all though it was a pretty nice "family together" time. I missed being able to get online but it didnt bother me much, and it was actually a rather nice break.

Wow. Yeah whenever the power goes out here it's usually back on within a few hours. The only time it was out long was last summer during that thing up at Niagra falls or whatever and we lost power aroun 1ish and had it back at about hmm 8? (I just remember we lost power at work and when I got home that night it was up within half hour. Sucked for the people at work, we had to empty the entire dairy case into carts to go into this refrigerated truck and then when we finally got that finished, the power went back on)
