I've been waiting since the mid 90's to check this place out and tonight was the night.

[LNet]-You: "lets see if I can last longer than 10 minutes"

10 seconds later

[The Rift]
Your wandering brings you to a small clearing. The ground is dry and parched, and there are large lines scratched into the surface and coated in a red, sticky substance. Following the lines a moment, you realize they make a rune covered circle, and that you are standing in the center of it. A cold wind whips around you at that point, and you hear howls in the distance. You also see a Vvrael witch and a Vvrael witch.
Obvious exits: northeast, southeast, west

A Vvrael witch gestures gracefully, hurling ebon motes of anti-mana at you!
CS: +352 - TD: +272 + CvA: +25 + d100: +76 - -5 == +186
Warding failed!
... 45 points of damage!
Strike to your throat removes it!

Sounds about right. Also remember the Rift is basically for casters.

I went for the first time a few months back unknowing about the disarm: got my ass handed to me and lost my crossbow. Took me a week to get a GM to give it back. Its fun to hunt there running for your life, but I hate using a crap weapon for fear of loosing mine. Other than that, welcome to the party!

It's not that likely that you'll lose a weapon in the rift but it does occasionally happen. There are other places you could hunt where it would be much more likely. The trouble is, in the rift, there's a fair chance that if you get cursed or lose it by whatever method, that a void will suck it right up and then it's just gone. Personally I've never lost a weapon there, and have hunted there for a long long time.

I liked hunting the rift, oddly enough.

I dunno... as far as capped hunting grounds, I'm definitely most fearful of the rift after hearing about the random effects and stuff... Really don't know if I'll ever hunt there, and I definitely won't go alone my first time.

It's really not that bad. Only random effects I know of though are the mana loss / mana gain pulses and non-native spell stripping. There are probably some rooms that are light or dark and modify AS/DS accordingly, but I don't think that's specific to the rift in any way.

I agree with subzero, I think a lot of people make The Rift out to be worse than it really is and it seems to scare people who have never been there before, probably because they want to keep it empty so they get more treasure! I'll take my tinfoil hat off now.

Granted the rift is the only high level area I've hunted so I don't know how it compares to other high level hunting grounds but up to Plane 3 isn't really that bad, never done anything past that. Sure the voids suck but there are only two per plane and the first three planes are so large it's hardly ever an issue. The disarm on plane 2 sucks. Getting rifted can suck but if you have lich that's hardly a problem really, just make the sands and the first room of each plane an alias and as soon as you see yourself get rifted either head for the sands or the beginning of the plane you were just on and you'll get back to sands/your plane in no time.

I heard a lot of people warn about rift worms too but I didn't see them with any sort of frequency until I hit plane 3 and even then I just ran past them and they never bothered me.

Come to think of it as far as number of times I've died I think the rift has been one of the safest hunting grounds for me.

There are alot of little tricks you can use to mitigate the spirit loss from the sphere and getting out using Eye-of-Koar emeralds if you can tote the coins. Rift has bee my favorite place to hunt since GS3. I love the effects and scripts inside. By far one of the cooler hunting grounds.

ORLY?

You also see a Vvrael witch and a Vvrael witch.

The Rift has always been one of my favorite areas in GS. You pretty much feel like you're walking straight into Hell when you first go there.

It also had in my opinion, the best storyline/events ever as far as a new area opening up. The whole Terate saga was pretty awesome, even though I was still pretty low level at the time.

Raving Lunatics are also some of the easiest things in the game to kill and at least back then, had pretty good loot.
