I've got this: a translucent pale crystal rod; Intricate runes intertwine, encircling the pale crystal rod from end to end. The rod seems awkwardly incomplete with an empty gem setting at its tip.; (Gem eater - Minor Cold, Minor Water, Major Cold, Resist Element)

How do you figure out what gems do which spells? The person I got it from does not know, and I've been told bard songs are generally inconclusive with gem eaters, although I haven't had it sung to yet.

Any ideas, or is it just trial and error?

they usually go by the color of the gems. you might want to try blue ones first for this one

also higher level the spell generally is a higher value gem, if it were an older gem eater it might also only take basic landing area gems, newer ones can take other realms gems.

Got a gem eater wand in the Droughtmans with same spells, if I remember right it was:

some blue lapis lazuli - major cold(907, metal wand spell)
a blue moonstone - major cold(907, metal wand spell)

a blue sapphire - minor cold(1709)
a blue diamond - minor cold(1709)

a blue spinel - resist elements(602)
a blue starstone - resist elements(602)

a blue tourmaline - minor water - (903, aqua wand spell)
a blue dreamstone - minor water - (903, aqua wand spell)

thanks, I will try that out this week. Does the value of the gem give it more uses? for example, a blue diamond is worth more than a blue sapphire, would that give more uses of 1709? When I do my experimentation, I'll see if there is a difference, and post back here.

Not sure on the charges per gem value, only really used the resist elements with blue spinels.
What I have been curious about is if you can use the gem eating rod in the wand holding staffs.

Given the age and sad state of some of the GS code, you might just make GS explode if you tried that

Actually, the gem-eater will just flop out of the wand holding staff and onto the ground, I wouldn't recommend it.

Gem value should give more uses.

I used an amethyst in a gem eater, got like 6 or 7 rubs of 102 I think it was.

Then used one of those fancy amethysts from somewhere.. Teras? planes? anyway.. it gave me over 100 rubs of 102.

granted this was an extreme example.

Have a bard purify your gems before using them in the rods. You'll get more uses out of them.
