Six Rune Events Incoming!
GS4-QORTAZ
In commemoration of the Tenth Anniversary of the release of the Enchiridion Valentia, Lord Vathon Kel'Driss Faendryl the Basilican Summoner will be traveling from Ta'Faendryl to the Dark Elven Embassy in Ta'Illistim to meet with Sorcerers of all races. There he will be reading excerpts from the Enchiridion Valentia, holding commentary on demonic summoning, and teaching Sorcerers in attendance some uncommon runes! He may also distribute several copies of the Enchiridion to those in attendance!
This is the first of a six part series of events that takes place on the 25th day of Lormesta, 5113. The topic of this discussion will be Grik'Tyr.
OOC Note:
This is part 1 of 6, taking place January 25th, 2013. Other events will be occurring every other month, discussing each of the valences twice. Rune teachings offered during the event will be in relation to the valence of discussion, for example, you will not be able to learn a rune from Shien'Tyr during the Lorae'Tyr discussion. Rune teachings are limited to one uncommon rune per account for the year.
In response to my question of "how will the runes be distributed?"
GS4-QORTAZ
Due to the caveat that we're doing 1 uncommon rune per account for the entire run, you can choose whichever you'd like. So, there will be two lectures about each valence, so hopefully you'll be able to attend the event of your preferred rune. If you show up for the Grik'Tyr lecture, you have the option of getting a teach from that valence. Show up, participate, you get a rune. There will be no spinning or raffles for runestones, however, as stated before 1 per account for the entire run. One thing to note, however, I was not able to secure lorae'tyr-abyran'sa as a teach for the Lorae'Tyr session. This has been deemed a special archetype to be won at special events. Out of my hands, but I do have a few other surprises so I hope you'll be happy with these events regardless!
EDIT: GOD DAMNIT, spelling Lord LOTH in front of everybody. How embarrassing!

Arashan are pretty awesome. I loved controlling webs. Good carrying capacity (stuff, not mana), and it is badass having a gigantic spider follow you around.

These would be the five runes I would learn:
abyran'sa - sanct break
arashan - web control
imp - sanct break
shadowling - practical mechanics are pretty much dried up at this point, so the last two are just preference choices. I like the communication ability of these guys
verlok - light feathers?! I dunno, I always think they'll come in handy at some point, but never really do

Fortunately, this is just the first of SIX events. There will be two events devoted to each valence, and you can recieve any of that valence's demons at any of the two meetings. So this is not your last chance . . . not to mention, you can only get one rune, so this might not be the one you want to use (Grik or Imp, that is).
I myself am torn, but I recently aquired the Aishan rune from Queleri, which was always my favorite and top priority. Others I am considering are the Verlok or Arashan, with eventual goals of the Imp, Shien or MAYBE Abyran'sa, I really don't know.
Something about knowing all of the Shien'tyr demons appeals to me, and its highly relevant to my character's RP, and then I also feel like thats stupid because it completely invalidates the Shien'tyr rune. I'm really not sure.
I actually really want a Verlok'asha . . . question to mscontrew or Ltlprprincess . . . are either of you planning to verlok'ar? I'd be interested in performing some experiments with them, I want to know if its possible to get a coraesine verlok. Otherwise, they are limited to the 4 elemental metals, drake and feras.
I want Verlok'asha myself because I want to see the rarest magic metals I can summon.

For those not following the officials:
The following is the list of UNCOMMON runes I will be able to teach at these events:
grik'tyr-grik
grik'tyr-imp
lorae'tyr-abyran
lorae'tyr-abyran'a
lorae'tyr-grantris
lorae'tyr-igaesha
lorae'tyr-verlok
shien'tyr-aishan
shien'tyr-arashan
shien'tyr-darkling
shien'tyr-shadowling
shien'tyr-shien
- GS4-Qortaz
I inquired as to why the verlok subtype runes were not being offered and the response was that they (and the others, like igaesha and grik) do not exist. So, plan accordingly, no verlok'ar for those seeking pocket guardians.

In case anyone wants a log of tonight's event. This is basically just Vathon's bit, maybe one or two other people asking a question, followed by Kastrel's demonstration of how the EVs work, since Vathon is handing out a 10th anniversary commemorative edition, which is attuned to your character and slightly different from the original EVs.
Vathon says, "As you may or may not know, this book here was originally written in the year Fifty-One Zero Three."
Vathon idly runs a finger along the enchiridion, and a faint sigil glowing softly at the corner disappears into the darkness.
Vathon says, "However..."
Vathon says, "It is based on a much older version. A version written by Faendryl for Faendryl, in the year Forty Four Zero Seven."
Vathon says, "The fine Lady Hilthia Waterlyon graciously and tediously translated the Faendryl to Common Language."
Vathon says, "However, the Faendryl, we have other designations and names for the Valences and their inhabitants, so it was deemed necessary to use terms recognized by all races of Sorcerers."
Vathon says, "Such, the Common Language Edition is born."
Vathon says, "Grik'Tyr is the valence we'll be focusing on tonight."
Vathon says, "As I read from the first chapter..."
Vathon recites:
"Perhaps the best-documented of all the valences, Grik'Tyr is marked by endless plains of boulders and slopes of scree. Although no mountain ranges have been charted, the terrain is uneven and precipitous cliffs are not uncommon. Charts stored in the repository show vast spiderwebs of shallow canyons cutting through the center of the explored region. Most are inaccessible by trail or pass, but easily navigated if a sorcerer enters the valence in their midst."
Vathon glances down at his dark leather enchiridion and stares at the pages for what seems like an eternity before slowly mouthing the words and phrases in understanding.
Vathon says, "So the first explorers of Grik'Tyr found a dry and arid place."
Vathon says, "No water has been observed on Grik'Tyr either, nor weather patterns of note."
Vathon says, "Consequently, two types of demons were found to inhabit Grik'tyr."
Vathon says, "The Grik, which lends its name to the Valence, and the Imp."
Vathon says, "As such, and as your new book will tell you, the Grik are winged creatures, with taloned hands."
Vathon says, "The Grik also have the inate ability to fly in their valence, however, such is NOT the case here..."
Vathon says, "I'd imagine that would be cause for concern if they could."
Vathon lightly rubs the edges of his dark leather enchiridion, evoking a soft chorus of whispery sighs from its pages.
Vathon says, "The Grik are tribal creatures, and four tribes have been observed on Grikt'Tyr..."
Vathon says, "They are the Grik'trak, the Grik'mlar, the Grik'pwal, and the Grik'tval."
Vathon says, "And it says here that the first Grik to be summoned to our plane was by Abdullahi Hazalred Faendryl. I know not of this person, however, much kudos belong to his family."
Vathon turns to the next page of his dark leather enchiridion.
Vathon runs his finger wander idly over the pages of the enchiridion, and after a moment an unseen rune flares briefly upon the writing -- casting forth the image of a shadowy winged creature soaring briefly over the dark leather enchiridion's cover before fading away.
Vathon glances at a sigil-chased dark leather enchiridion in his hand.
Vathon says, "That was a Grik."
Vathon says, "As I said, this book is quite powerful in the hands of a Sorcerer."
Vathon says, "I suggest once receiving your copy, you figure out how useful it can be."
Vathon says, "Moving on, the Imp is the only other inhabitant we've studied in the Grik'Tyr valence."
Vathon says, "They are a diminutive creature, humanoid in stature, though rather slender and completely hairless."
Vathon says, "The curious imp seems to have no facial features from afar, however, upon closer examination, seem to mimic that which is studying them."
Vathon turns to the next page of his dark leather enchiridion.
Vathon says, "As I read about an encounter with an Imp from the first explorer named Bolotyn Xendrem Faendryl..."
Vathon recites:
"Shyrelm turned to speak with me and I spied the imp over his shoulder. It bounded to a tall urn formed of grey-streaked marble. As I watched, his torso bloated and his arms, which had been raised over his head, began to meld and lengthen, then widen at the palms. Before I knew it, there was an exact copy of the urn where the imp had been. I bid Shyrelm to look, but my voice was a startle and the imp was there again, cowering in the shadow of the container...""
Vathon says, "So, we learn that the imp can take many forms."
Vathon says, "On Grik'Tyr there is a hierarchy of sorts.."
Vathon says, "The Grik appear to have dominance over the Imp, and when they are summoned and in the presence of one another, this dominance can be observed."
Vathon asks, "Has anyone had the displeasure of seeing this first hand?"
Tarakan asks, "Even on this plane?"
Vathon nods at Tarakan.
Vathon says, "Especially one this plane."
Kastrel softly says, "Though I might not call it a displeasure."
Vathon coughs.
Vathon says, "On."
Kastrel softly says, "It was fairly interesting."
Vathon says, speaking to Kastrel, "Listen to a hundred imp screech at the same time over a single Grik, you will find it distasteful."
Vathon says, "As such, the Sorcerer who is controlling the imp must be careful, for it is much easier to lose control when a Grik is present."
Vathon says, "The imp was first summoned by Shyrelm Darhlith Faendryl."
Vathon says, "'You can read more accounts about the Grik'Tyr valence in your book."
Vathon nods.
Vathon closes his dark leather enchiridion.
Vathon begins to trace his fingers in a slow, circular spiral around the dark leather enchiridion, and its surface comes alive with frenetic slivers of blue-black energy. After a moment, the essence fades away, and its hue darkens, pulsing briefly like a black heart before returning to normal.
Vathon nods slowly.
Vathon put a sigil-chased dark leather enchiridion in his Faendryl robes.
Vathon says, "Now then."
My new enchiridion:
>look at my ench
Encircled by a series of ten silver sigils, the enchiridion is bound by well-polished leather of a solid ebon hue. Within the very heart of the central spiral of sigils is an intricate crest--that of a solid steel pentacle upon a field of grey, the lustrous metal stained a deep scarlet. Arcing designs of silver wreath the spine of the enchiridion, and a small depression dips gracefully along the upper edges, bordered by glimmering shards of faceted onyx.

--- Enchiridion Valentia ---
The Tenth Anniversary Common Language Edition by Lord Vathon Kel'Driss Faendryl, Released in 5113
Originally Translated to Common by Lady Hilthia Waterlyon Faendryl in 5103
To Lihai, May your Shadow never leave the Heart of the Art ~ Vathon
Notes about this edition:
This abridged edition of the Enchiridion Valentia was translated to Common in the year 5103 and is known as the First Common Edition. It is based on the seventeenth Faendryl edition released in the year 4407, abridged by the Scholars of the Valences in 5103.
The initial chapters are not released as part of this edition, as the Faendryl consider the wider population of sorcerers unable to appreciate the nuances of the art of summoning and interplanar travel.
Faendryl designations of demons and valences have been maintained, as these are the terms most recognized by all sorcerers, regardless of their race, and the terms tend to be untranslatable into Common tongue.
Kastrel's demonstration of the enchiridions:
Kastrel recites softly:
"For those who do not have experience with these books, there are a number of enchantments it possesses."
"First, if you tap a page, the book will automatically open to that page whenever you open the book in the future, if you so wish it. You can tap it again to dispel the enchantment."
"While the book is closed, you can lock it. While locked, it will not be able to be opened by any errant thieves. You can unlock it quite easily yourself, but it will not open until you do so."
"Upon the thirteenth page is a journal for recordkeeping. If you wave the valentia at a demon you have summoned, you can record its appearance in one of ten slots for later reference. You can nudge the valentia to select another slot for recording."
"Finally, you can point your valentia at a demon, and it will open immediately to the page documenting that demon. Furthermore, if you put a runestone on the valentia, it will inform you the purpose of said runestone, assuming it is related to summoning"
Kastrel softly says, "And of course, as Lord Vathon has shown himself, if you touch the book while it is open to a specific demon's page, it will display an image of it."
And, lastly, some of the scripts:
Kastrel begins to trace his fingers in a slow, circular spiral around the dark leather enchiridion, and its surface comes alive with frenetic slivers of dark crimson energy. After a moment, a miasma of shadow rises up from its cover and disperses into the air.
Kastrel opens his dark leather enchiridion, its pages crisply falling against one another.
Kastrel turns to the next page of his dark leather enchiridion.
Kastrel idly runs a finger along the enchiridion, and a faint sigil at the edge of the page pulses briefly with a hazy black glow.

Vathon's lessons do not come with additional teaching, and Grik is NOT a commonly known rune (well, it was prior to the last lecture, anyway), so I expect there would be few, if any, teaches available at all. Any that are would be known by someone who recieved a Grik lesson from a raffle or spin, potentially years ago.
He hasn't announced the next round of Grik lessons, but if he follows a every other month format, it will either be in July, September, or November. You have some time.

Notes from this lesson:
Vathon exclaims, "Welcome everyone to the final lecture in the first round of valence topics. Tonight we'll be discussing Shien'tyr!"
Vathon says, "Either way, Shien'tyr is a fascinating subject."
Vathon says, "Especially Shien'tyr's most peculiar attribute, the apparent ability to absorb any and all light."
Vathon says, "Those brave Sorcerers who have travelled to Shien'tyr and have tried to illuminate their paths, have found their light sources almost immediately snuffed out, even those light sources whose origins were magical."
Vathon says, "This phenomenon has been a mystery to this day."
Vathon says, "But, what they COULD see in those few brief moments was..."
Vathon says, "... not much of anything, really."
Vathon says, "Dark, drifting haze, and undulating shadows dominated their immediate landscape."
Vathon says, "Travellers were forced to use the non-descript ground to navigate. Featureless, however, the only differences coming from what appeared to be elevation changes. Again, though, no one knows if this is due to actual physical features in Shien'tyr, or perceived tiredness from travellers legs."
Vathon says, "The biggest mystery, however, is what happens to those travellers upon return. Their eyes and senses needing weeks to readjust to the light. Their clothes, even, losing the very color of their threads. Seemingly, though, they return to normal after a few weeks as well."
Vathon says, "As if somehow... infected, by this light stealing phenomenon."
Vathon says, "Something in the Shien'tyr valence appears to steal everything light touches, enshrouding it in eventual darkness."
Vathon says, "If I had to guess, I imagine we'll never figure out the source of this unnatural occurance."
Vathon says, "Now then, moving along to those creatures who inhabit Shien'tyr."
Vathon says, "First of which, we'll talk about the Shien. Who lend their name to this valence."
Vathon says, "The Shien are split into two separate groups. The shadowlings, and the darklings."
Vathon says, "Both sometimes appear with shrouds of hazy blue mist."
Vathon says, "Shien have an acute sense of hearing, which we surmise develops from living in complete darkness. They have an uncanny ability to repeat what is heard, often from very long distances away, and repeat these words with pitch perfect tone to their masters."
Vathon says, "The Shien do not appear to react to other demons, however, they will sometimes mimick the figures of creatures who are in their immediate vicinity."
Vathon says, "If you've ever summoned a Shien, you'll know exactly what I am talking about."
Vathon says, "The next inhabitant of Shien'tyr is the Aishan."
Vathon says, "The Aishan live side by side with the Shien, but there is no known hierarchy amongst these demon."
Vathon says, "The Aishan closely resemble the Wolf here in Elanthia, with four legs and broad shoulders. Their fur, though hazy and insubstantial, can change colors based on the immediate surroundings."
Vathon says, "The Aishan are known for their large and pupilless eyes, sometimes reflecting the images of the Sorcerer back at them.."
Vathon says, "Though, sometimes, people have reported seeing disturbing visions in the eyes of the Aishan, those depicting their own death, certain crisis, and those who have passed beyond the veil."
Vathon says, "As I quote from Nuriemdah Miensler Faendryl..."
Vathon recites:
"I saw myself, as I am ... then my eyes were missing, blood upon my cheeks, gore ... He was behind
me, holding a short dagger similarly coated with blood. I looked behind me and there was nothing. I
touched my face, nothing. When I looked again into the aishan's eye, it was just myself, as I am."
Vathon says, "The Aishan, like the Shien, have great sense of smell and awareness, and like their Elanthian counterparts, are very loyal to their Sorcerer masters. Their bite is brutal and can cause viscious disease, and their mouths are lined with oversized, razor-sharp teeth."
Vathon says, "Finally, we move on to the Arashan."
Vathon says, "The Arashan most closely resemble the spider here in Elanthia, with an abdomen, thorax and a head. However, they have no eyes. Obviously, they do not require them in their natural habitat."
Vathon says, "They own many long, wiry legs, that twitch often to get a feel for their surroundings."
Vathon says, "Over the Arashan's mouth, three hand-sized tentacles cover their openings. Though, these tentacles seem to hang below the mouth, most of the time."
Vathon says, "The Arashan, if you've ever had the pleasure to summon one, will often talk to itself in a cryptic, indecipherable language."
Vathon says, "However, no one has ever reported two Arashan's carrying on a coversation, they only seem to speak to themselves when alone.
Vathon says, "Unlike the Aishan, the Arashan is extremely disobedient, and will often ignore the commands of its Sorcerer master."
Vathon says, "Says here the first Sorcerer to ever summon an Arashan was..."
Vathon points at Allereli.
Vathon exclaims, "Her!"
Vathon says, "Those are the three natural inhabitants of the Shien'tyr valence. Could there be more? Yes. Will I travel there to find out? No."
Demyse inquires, "Which of those mentioned thus far do you fancy most?"
Speaking to Demyse, Vathon says, "The Shien."
Vathon says, "So very curious creatures."

Also, there were lots of hints at the last two sessions that the series would continue.

Sorcerers, if you want to work on illusions before hand, at least 1 Master of Illusions and an extra sorcerer audience member will be there from 7:30 until the start of the lecture. Get some illusion work done, go to the lecture, and maybe learn an uncommon rune.

Vathon says, "I'm going to do my best to hold these once a month."
Vathon says, "In addition, there will be no restrictions on how many demons you can learn from me this year."
Vathon says, "However, you can only know a total of five uncommon runes. So, at some point, you'll have to choose."

Got a fresh smooth stone, some aish'vrak potion and drew out the wy'zio rune. So hopefully that's all I need, since I definitely refuse to forget a rune before I'm at the event, in the off-chance I missed it or it was cancelled.
I'm still laughing about this, though: "A fresh wy'zio rune will contain 3 charges"
3 charges on forgetting uncommon runes, and 6 charges for quiss'fyn.
Seriously, how many years would a wy'zio runestone last. Not that I really want them to make it worse and just one-shot each, but it still amuses me how useless 3 charges are in this case.

If you use it, would you mind posting a log afterward? Most of us have never seen one used.
And then throw that runestone away, along with its two remaining charges. It's too dangerous to leave lying around.

Qortaz doesn't seem to have good luck on these nights. He was about 20 min late and skipped the talk and went straight to teaching. he said next one he will be teaching any rune he is allowed to.

A stream of dark smoke issues forth from a blurred light grey shadowling towards you. A message begins to echo in your mind as the smoke surrounds you, "Lord Vathon will be making an urgent appearance at the Faendryl Embassy in Ta'Illistim tomorrow evening . He will be discussing an upcoming journey to the Lorae'tyr valence and teaching uncommon runes from all valences."
Got so caught up in the shadowling message I forgot to put a time. I'm thinking like 10:15, after a certain TV show. I'll send out some more messaging tonight and tomorrow as a reminder.

I'm talking about something along the lines of a Khornate Daemon or a Plaguebearer. Screw these centipede and snake posers.

750 will probably be a summoning spell, but if it hasn't come out by now they likely have no idea to balance it.

Summon a creature from the area you are hunting to fight for you. You can have only one such creature at at time, and it won't attack player characters.
Seems pretty balanced to me, but I don't play a sorcerer so I guess there's something wrong with the idea.

Sounds a lot like Animate Dead, but with the inability to attack other players, which animates can do.

How about just summoning a big demon that acts like an animal companion but works on a 'contract' and it comes with its own sort of gimmick? Like uh... say you want to summon a Demon and a Greed Demon comes out. It'll fight for you for 3 days but claims any gems you might encounter? A Wrath Demon that comes at the price of violent outbursts when not hunting? Etc, etc.

Honestly I'd prefer a spell like lich form or demonic possession. Something that augments the caster in powerful ways. They could even do both and you'd utilize one or the other depending on your lore and preparation.

For those who don't yet know, Qortaz is leaving staff and Lord Vathon is no more(ish). He defied the Basilica and traveled to the Lorae'tyr valence.
I don't know if any GM will pick up the teachings with another NPC.
