View Full Version : Repeat question about FPS

Alright, my annual quest to find a FPS that has any sort of decent single player options is kicking off again. I really enjoyed the last Deus Ex and it's heavy RPG overtones. It had some decent FPS elements. I'm looking for the reverse I guess. Mainly focused on FPS that bring some story and single player potential. Are there any options out there? Did Black Ops II have a decent solo side or is it still only about multiplayer and constantly getting smoked? I don't play enough of them, often enough, not to get smoked a ton at first. I do however like the idea of running around with a gun shooting shit through holographic Eotech scopes or whatever. Do I need to fall back to Mass Effect 3 to even get something semi decent (I presume it's more than decent) solo story-wise? Crisis 2?

Did you play Spec Ops: The Line? As a shooter it was middle-of-the-road, but really excelled at the single player campaign.
Of course, when I say it excelled, I mean that it told a well-written story, and it did it in a compelling manner...but from the informal, unscientific polling of people I know, it was split about 50/50 about whether the game was good - and it mostly came down to what you could stomach in a game about the dark side of war.

The Line is a 3rd person shooter.
Drake, you mentioned Black Ops 2 so I am assuming you're gaming on a console and not a desktop. Regardless, I would highly recommend Crysis 2. It was a huge improvement over the first one and the graphics are just amazing, at least on the PC. Especially if you have a card capable of pushing DX11. C3 is coming out soon and looks even better.

Ah true, it was a 3rd person, forgot about that. Engrossing nonetheless.

I'm hoping for Doom 4 in 2013 but I'm not going to hold my breath.
*Apparently Id has shut down their mobile games division and the entire company is now working on D4. Good times.

No, I use a PC. I presume Black Ops II is for the PC because it's on Steam. The reason I mentioned it was simply that I was looking for something leaning toward realism and away from pure science fiction. Not looking to challenge myself so much as just run around accomplishing side quests, kill shots and what the fuck ever with a weapon I can mod based on what I like. How limiting is Crysis 2? I suspect you use whatever the standard weapon is for the armor. Borderlands 2 was nice, but I was looking for something more true to realistic combat.

I didn't know it was available for PC. I'm not sure what you mean by how limiting is it.

Black Ops 2 is fun. It even has a few missions that somewhat behave like ghost recon(You direct a squad or two and can jump down to 1st Person and shoot crap.) Basically any FPS worth a damn will always be on PC, since most FPS based tournaments are on the PC.

What I meant was just what weapon options. Like with the crysis armor are there only 4 available weapons? I really have no idea.

Deus Ex HR is only $4.99 on Steam.

Yeah, already played it and beat it. There are some outstanding deals on Steam right now. There's a very nice Bethesda deal running right now that includes Skyrim, Dishonored and a crapload of other nice games for $90.
I just went ahead and got ME3 for $20...the nicer version.

How was it? I just finished downloading it, probably won't play until later though.

I thought DE:HR was pretty damn good, but the way they handled the ending left a lot to be desired. The Missing Link DLC is also good, but it's about 4 hours long and doesn't add anything to the base game item wise. I don't remember what the normal DLC price is, so if you can get it for a discount do so.
Black Ops 2 had some surprisingly decent storyline branching depending on your choices and whether or not you were able to accomplish certain objectives. It's probably worth at least two playthroughs.

Crysis 2 is 9.99 for 5 more hours on steam. I've never played any of the Crysis, but I went ahead and picked it up.

Yeah, I plan to play through, atleast the very last mission, again.

This Deus Ex was pretty awesome for the most part. Some of the graphics were really mediocre though, especially a lot of the textures which were just downright horrible.

I don't have a high end machine so I can't say I really noticed. The gameplay and style were what got my attention and kept me interested. I don't know if it was RPG of the year quality but it's definitely a must buy at the reduced prices that Steam is selling it for.
Also, ME3 was about what I expected. Very nice. No idea how far into it I am. 10-15% if I was guessing. I'm up to like 900ish points but my readiness is still only at 50%. Pretty cool additions to the game with the Reapers chasing you in the systems and stuff. I've found the missions to be easy except there always seems to be one battle that's a true bitch. Saving the students at Grissom Academy turned out to be a massive bitch on the one screen where you are in the atrium.

Deus Ex was good... but pretty brief, and I didn't really feel challenged throughout the game.
I recommend Borderlands and Borderlands 2 if you're looking for something that's a bit more FPS and a bit less about the RPG (there are quests/story, but they're about as engaging as WOW quests).
Alternatively, there's Planetside 2, which is supposed to be an FPS MMO... I just picked it up a little while ago, and... I'm not a huge fan of it, but I can see how people are. It ends up suffering from Battlefield type problems where there's such a drastic inbalance between tanks/air versus people that whoever has the bigger armored army wins. Although, not hard to get armor'ed units... Of course, the mmo qualities of the game are basically just unlocking gear for your characters using XP, and a persistent battle map.
Reaching back into the vault, Bioshock 1/2, which I'll assume you've played.

Never played Bioshocks or the FEAR series. You thought Deus Ex was brief? Man, I must've been doing it wrong. Took me a couple weeks to beat it. Planetside holds almost zero interest to me. I've beaten Borderlands and am in a long pause on Borderlands 2. Good games, though.

I agree on the difficulty for Deus Ex: HR, the game was far too easy, even on the hardest setting. As far as length though I thought it was perfect. I thought they could have done a better job with the augments though, there were a bunch that were useless and some that were just completely overpowered.
I disagree about the comment regarding armor/air inbalance in BF3 as vehicles are easily destroyed, even by infantry. Has anyone tried the latest expansions for that? I'm slightly tempted to reinstall it. I know BF4 is supposedly coming out this winter which I'm not too happy about. I think EA/Dice is screwing over the PC base by not releasing modding tools.
I'm looking forward to Crysis 3 but I can't think of any other good FPS games coming out. I didn't like Bioshock so I'm not interested in the new one coming out.

Aftermath? A new mode, 4 new maps, and a crossbow. The maps are good, but the mode (Scavenger) is sort of derpy. I wasn't too impressed with the crossbow either, and if you aren't premium I'd say give this one a pass.
