Alafaya, they're cute dogs! Your mastiff scares me though! I can only imagine your daily walks with them!

Gib: Awwwwww. I'm sorry for your loss. He looks like a real lovebug.

Anyway, my contributions!

My stepdad had decided we needed a guard dog for our house since there were some burglary scares recently. He spoke to a friend who told him about a rescued dog staying at the vet's, so he agreed to get the dog. The day before we were to pick up the dog, I asked if it was a boy or a girl, what kind of breed? Fierce? Large? He had no idea.

This was our "guard dog"

http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b590/inarticulate_muse/The%20Dog/2709686645_48b6a1389a_zps9fd28e9e.jpg

We were clueless, first-time pet owners and she is really good at twisting us around her paw:

http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b590/inarticulate_muse/The%20Dog/3441913128_0813bba029_zpsd63fca2c.jpg

I tried to get her to participate in cutesy photos with props, like below, but it was hard work and any time I would crouch down on the floor, she would take it as a signal to lick my face (not a good thing when I'm allergic):

http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b590/inarticulate_muse/The%20Dog/3225821828_b971719160_zpsc72d8b19.jpg

She more or less fulfilled her purpose though. Kind of. Somewhat. Also, she was supposed to be an outside dog, but...

WOW! So many animals :) Are you in the vet line or anything?

Gorgeous black dogs. Your cats are chilling. :) That is adorbs. Sorry I don't like birds...but it looks pretty.

The bigger images are because we linked them from a photo site. If you attach them, then it becomes like what you have.

Yeah, Sparta was actually pretty pleased to go on a walk. She trotted around jauntily. The Jack Russell and the pit remained inside, shivering under the blanket. She still wasn't as happy as she would be in knee-deep snow, though. I feel like I'm being cruel by not driving her back up to Denver whenever they get more snow.

Good on you, Showal, for adopting a pit. Now that I'm a homeowner, I feel guilty even contemplating not rescuing a pit for my next dog. I have a secure yard, insurance and I'm familiar with the breed. How could I condemn an innocent pit to death because all the other people who'd want to adopt them live in places that won't accept them? Blargh. But my next dog has to be something froofy for shows and competitions.

Get a pitt mix and have your vet say its something else. I'm going to tell my vet that he is a hound mix. He looks enough like a vizsla. Problem solved.

I truthfully would have gotten another saint. I am happy I picked up this guy, but after my last saint, who was also a rescue, I just love the breed and big dogs are so hard for rescues to place. But the misses hates the shedding, so maybe she will forget when it comes time for the next one haha. This guy is a little sweetheart though. 70 pounds!

Believe it or not, some home owner insurances will drop your insurance for them. Then again, they would for my old saint bernard, who dangerously slept all day. I'm not saying they base these things on logic.

I have no clue, honestly. If I were to guess, it'd be due to dog aggression sometimes seen in spitz breeds. I haven't seen it before, but that would be my guess. But then again, other breeds with real aggression issues are ignored, like american eskimo dogs. Bull mastiffs also cause issues with most insurances, but not English or French mastiffs. English mastiffs are enormous and french can have people and dog aggression. Meanwhile, mastiffs are known not to bite, but hold down threats. I can't give good explanations, but it is clear that some breeds are targeted while others are ignored.

Insurance companies are risk averse. Most states have "dog bite" statutes that impose absolute liability and double or treble damages against the owner. Dog bites are expensive to settle, especially because they often leave scarring. Even worse if it's a female who's injured.

Taken together? If you fail to inform your insurer about your dog and they discover its existence after it attacks someone, then they will drop you (and with good reason). Normally, however, they will not just drop you after you're covered; they will more likely refuse to insure you in the first place, if you're honest about the door.

I see a lot of people advocating for what's essentially insurance fraud (calling it something other than what it is to secure coverage, or not mentioning its existence at all). I've got no dog in that hunt (ha), but i'll mention that in situations where that's happened, I've successfully denied coverage under a homeowners policy.

It is just frustrating in the cases of mix breeds. Mine looks pit but very well might not have a trace in his dna. My girlfriend's dog doesn't look pit at all, but I'm sure she has some in her. And dog dna tests are unreliable at best.

I get that insurance companies are covering their asses, but the fact remains that it's very illogical to make a blanket statement not to insure spitz breeds. I can understand huskies, akitas, pits, great danes, etc...but there is very little logic in banning all spitz breeds.

That's good to hear. I'm actually surprised herders aren't banned. I've had three in my life and they are all very loyal but very aggressive towards other dogs when they aren't on their own turf. Also, labs can be problems if the owner doesn't exercise them enough.

Insurers don't care what they do to other dogs; they care what they might do to people with whom they come into contact. The problem insurers face is that it is unreasonable to underwrite dogs on a case by case basis. So I could see an argument as to why they'd refuse to insure a certain breed. But insurers also like money and most dogs don't bite, so...

Labs, from what I have read, are the most common cause of dog bites, but that could be due to how common they are. And I must correct myself, the source I read said eskimo spitz (aka American Eskimo). I stand corrected on the blanket spitz, but I do remember reading it somewhere, but I'm likely wrong.

Also, I should mention that I have never lied about a dog breed I have owned. Some people say that my current dog looks pit, but I don't really agree. I think he looks like a vizsla - dogue de Bordeaux cross. Size, appearance, and personality of him agree.

upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/55/Dogue_de_Bordeaux_serious.jpg

upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/89/Vizsla_02.jpg

I will be telling this to my vet. If they disagree, I won't argue, but it is hard to disprove either way. He is a good boy either way and I will be training him consistently like I have with all my dogs. Barring some sort of significant f aggression issue that he has hidden very well so far, I am sure he will continue to be a good dog. If people want to call him a pit, I won't stop them, I just don't agree.

I had a golden for 17 years. His last two years were pretty rough, but he had a good life. I, myself, didn't spend the money, but I can imagine that his health care was somewhere in the tens of thousands. Just to list a few things he did:

1) Swallowed a box of fish hooks, whole, only to have them open in his stomach
2) Swallowed a full sized nerf football whole. The vet gave it back to us in a zip lock bag. I still don't know how he did that
3) He ate a bottle of wood glue, which hardened in his stomach. After he recovered, he ate his way through the cabinet door to eat the other bottle of wood glue.
4) He ate a telephone
5) He ate two dozen eggs when he figured out how to open the refig
6) He jumped out of our fenced in back yard, which was 10 ft high, only to run to a neighbors place where they had chickens. He jumped in the chicken coop, but was scared of the chickens and found cornered by a bunch of a chickens.
7) Ohh, and the best (and worst) was when he was about 4 months old he bit our other dog's ear next to our pool and the dog shook her ears, flinging him into the pool. He started to sink. Luckily, my mom was there and was able to jump in and save him. After that, he was terrified of water and would only run around in the gutters to chase our black lab who went swimming every day.

There is no doubt about that. My siamese cat died over 3 years ago and I'm still saddened by it sometimes. I actually had a dream about him last night. I picked him up and started petting him, not realizing I was dreaming. Then I woke up and was all emo.

I said that too. I'm not over my last dog and I really don't think I ever will be. I said "maybe in a few years" and meant it. This is going to show how much of softie I am, but my girlfriend sent me this and changed my mind immediately: http://chasinthenews.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/407691_354401181239762_100000096500590_1416350_186 5928291_n.jpg

Now I know my old dog really would have just wrote for me to fiercely defend her food bag for the rest of time, but it is true. I am a good home for a dog that needs a home and it'd be selfish of me to deny the care to a homeless dog because I am upset over my old dog. But we are also big animal people, and those ads are written for people like me.

Get an Akita. They are just as bad ass as pits, but no one is scared of them. And they are good show dogs.

Heh! I'm not a show person in that way. I'm a poodle primper. Dog groomer. Pet stylist, et cetera. When I say I need something froofy, I mean something that will show off my skill with scissors. Bichons, poodles, some kind of doodle... they don't need to be pure for grooming competitions necessarily, depending on the category. I'm resistant because while I like working with them, I don't really want to live with them. I might compromise and get a Wire Hair Fox Terrier. I like terriers. They're such assholes.

Fucker, stop making me cry.

I'm amazed over here. What's his age and weight? How does he do with other dogs and other animals and people (friends and strangers)? Haha sorry for all the questions, I've just heard of aggression in the cane lines and the dogue de bordeaux lines but I have a hard time believing it given the background of the lines. Yeah... We decided to not have his ears or his tail cut. His tail is as hard as a piece of wood, though... So it hurts sometimes when he's excited. Every other cane corso I see in the area has them done, and I like his look much better, to be honest.

He's 5 years old as of two months ago. He's about 130 pounds, give or take.

He's actually awesome with people and other animals. The people at the park call him the park sheriff. He doesn't ever start fights, he's very tolerant of little dogs who try to jump on him and lick his face, and he will actively break up other dog fights. He will pick the dog who is the aggressor and grab it by the collar and pull it away. He never tries to bite the actual skin. Then he'll stay between the two as long as they are together and watch them to make sure they don't fight anymore. If he DOES get attacked... he tends to just grab the other dog by the neck, put it on the ground, and immediately try to walk away.

That's very common mastiff behavior. Must be nice knowing you're the biggest dog in the area and can regulate everything. Awesome. One of my friends was looking for a cane corso. I'll have to let him know.

And you're right. He has a much better look like that. Sometimes the docked and cropped look is good, but it's not worth the process of getting it for the dog. It's considered very painful and most vets around here refuse to do it. I've heard it's illegal in some states.

You're probably right. He behaves like a pit too. I hear everything for what breed he is. I've thought he looks like he could be part dogue de bordeaux too, because of his colors and markings and his eye color.4539 I brought him to get my oil changed and as soon as we pulled up, a guy there yelled "it's a dogue de bordeaux!!"

But he could easily be a red nosed pit too. I honestly hear so many different breed suggestions for him, just about any breed won't surprise me at this point. The saliva DNA tests are too unreliable and I don't feel like spending almost $200 for the blood based DNA test to figure it out. Maybe some day, but right now, it's not worth the price to find out something that really doesn't make a difference to me.

He's turning out to be a great dog. A lot of energy, but calms down real nice when he's run or walked.

I'm over in Boston. There's a lot of money in this area, so sometimes you get to see some gorgeous dogs from perfect show lines, but for the most part, they're just companion animals and with the big push for people to rescue around here, most are mixed breeds.

Ok. This is bugging me. I've been looking at a ton of red nose pits and for the most part, I see where you're coming from, but his shoulders are definitely too narrow to be a true pit. But a few have very similar markings to him. But his jowls are bigger and his head is a little narrow. Then again, his snout is too long for a ddb. It'd probably be easier if I could find a good picture of a red nose without cropped ears. I'll post some better pictures of him. Closer up and stuff. Someone get to the bottom of this shit.

Keep in mind that your average pit posted on the internet is a well-exercised specimen, built up. My pit's narrower in the shoulders and head too, because I haven't spent a bunch of time building her muscles. I can't even be bothered to exercise myself let alone force her onto a treadmill for a couple of hours a day or hitching her up to a weight pull. When she was a puppy, one of our movers tried to tell me where he could hook me up with some kind of special beef bone I could have her chew on to make her head bigger with greater jaw power. I just sort of smiled and nodded.

Yeah that's true. Plus I bet he was neutered at a very young age, softening his features. Plus he runs a lot so he is slim. I know pit bulls are one of those things were there is not a lot of standardization in the breed so you get a lot of variety. He sure is handsome though!

Also, recently sighted at the off leash park near here: black lab/corgi mix. Tiny short legs with an almost full size lab body slapped on top. Fucking awesome dog.

Its a Pembrooke Welsh Corgi! She's a sweetie. We love her so much. She was a real trooper yesterday. We took her with us after we picked her up to go straight to the dealership to get our new car. I got a awesome new pet, and a rx8! :D

The problem is that I'm not good at thinking of ways to mask hyperlinks in e-mails with pictures of sad puppies in cages in black and white saying stuff like "GET STANLEY BURRELL A DOG" or "FEED ME A CAT" but mostly the former one, although the second one was pretty funny too, imho. Also, I see a lot of people with specific breeds and they're cute bastards, but ... can you deliberately adopt a mutt as a puppy? So that there's like less of chance of health complications. And not selectively bred Poodlecockers, Schnauzercorns, etc.

It's just my sister's got a pit bull that is awesome with people, but she has to break her back when it comes to other dogs. And I was getting nervous about adopting an older dog because even though; well I like all dogs, but even though I'm not getting a pit bull, she was explaining how the first dog she wanted to adopt also had "a little bit of trouble getting along with other dogs" and it ended up having to be anesthetized at the shelter about a week before she would have picked him up, because he would not let go of another dog. So my fear with that is that I really, really don't know the dog. Or at least trust the non puppy mill people, despite their awesome efforts, to give me the full scoop.

Edit: even though it was highly likely that these were dogs that were abandoned that were being used for fighting, or breeding, that I'm not going to know that until it occurs on my watch. The knowhow of health issues and what I'm told vs. what might be the actual truth definitely makes me antsy as well.

Legitimate concerns. I think you would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't at least visit your local shelters and spend time asking these questions of the shelter staff. They don't want the animals returned so I don't think they'd lie to you. The shelter where we got Max kept a record of his walks, after each one the volunteer would mark down any behaviors, like pulling, etc. They will let you walk the animal around on a leash and they'd know if he is aggressive to other animals. Just go visit one with an open mind.

I usually only adopt mutts, even as puppies. I would have to agree with Tisket though. You might consider a non-puppy too. The right dog makes life so much better than a dog you pick just because it's a cute puppy. I like puppies as much as the next girl, but being a good fit trumps adorable puppy any day of the week. For me, any dog I adopt has to be either a puppy or raised with cats since I have a cat too. When looking for a dog it's best to find out what you want and what your lifestyle can accommodate. When adopting a puppy a lot of time is spent on training, so if your time is limited, getting a puppy may not be for you. A quick google search can produce a lot of information that might help you decide what you need as far as breed, size, age, etc.

Hope that helps!

This makes sense. I've considered heading to the local animal shelter and spending time with some of the dogs, excluding puppies, just to see whether or not a particular pup would fit the bill. Alright, thanks PC people.

Edit: Er, pup, or puppy I call all dogs, but it's not age-related.

I think that's a great idea. Volunteering is also a great way to get to know the different dogs. What you see in the kennel is not always the way they are. If you volunteer with some of the dogs, you can see how they interact and react when out in the open, both with people and with other animals. I have nothing against pitbulls, I think they can be very lovely dogs, but if you do adopt one, consider your housing situation. If you rent, it may be hard to find a place that will take a pitbull. A simple consideration like that might keep a dog from getting rehomed. I know if I owned my own house instead of renting like I do, I would consider a pitbull if it was the right dog for my family. Just be ready, because going into shelters is always heartbreaking, and if you're like me, every time you walk in you want to bring every single one home.

I agree with Tisket. Consider an adult, for sure. You have some legitimate concerns, but let me assure you, the majority of dogs at shelters were not surrendered due to aggression and poor socialization, or due to being used for fighting and breeding. Most of animals in the shelters are there for no fault of their own. People lose their jobs, their homes, or any number of issues that cause them to give up their pets. Most were loved pets. And even the ones who lacked adequate socialization or training can do very well when placed in the right home that either rarely contacts other animals or are willing to invest the training required to control or reverse bad behaviors.

The last things shelters want is for their pets to come back to the shelter. They consider that a failure in their job. They're more likely to be honest or just tell you "we're not sure about that because they've never been exposed to that". Also, volunteers at shelters are human too. They don't want you to take on a dog you're not going to be happy with. That's a shitty situation.

A lot of shelters have their own philosophy about placing their animals and how they reveal information. Spend a bit of time reading the pet "bios" and evaluate their adoption procedures and the literature on their sites. You'll pick it up real soon. They should allow you to introduce other dogs to their dogs to ensure a good fit and home. You'll pick up their behaviors through investing a bit of time with them.

Ultimately, adult dog or young dog is only a decision you can make. They both have a lot of things to consider, but just don't go into adopting a puppy thinking you'll be getting a clean slate. Puppies have their own personalities and bad behaviors that require work, as well. This is how a lot of people end up with poorly socialized animals. You have a little puppy that has a bad interaction with another dog, and before you know it, you're limiting socialization and reinforcing bad behaviors by trying to avoid those triggers. Or say your puppy jumps up on guests or is destructive, these are also common puppy traits that can be really hard to break. Nevermind going through housebreaking a puppy.

I really think that, for most people, finding an adult dog who's temperament has already been established and matching the proper owner to that temperament is the best way. Spend some time looking into it and be very honest with yourself about what you can handle, how much time you can spend, and what you'll want from this animal. The right dog IS out there for you. You just have to spend some time and find it.
