View Full Version : Non UAC Monk Builds
Just curious if anyone else have tried out any non UAC builds.
Monks have access to cheap MOC, TWC, OHE, Thrown, CM and THW among the other staples of dodge, PT, etc.
I'm sure most people are focusing on UAC, but I think this is only a very small part of what monk can be. CMAN skills like Inner Harmony and Slippery mind add some flexibilty if you dont want to UAC.

Meureii (in game name, don't know the name here) took my advice on a ranged (open) monk build and is apparently slaughtering shit.
Benefits:
* Perfect Self to help reduce bow fire time.
* 1213 for ez-mode permanent surge of strength, combined with perfect self this is a +21 strength booster giving you -2 seconds on your bow. Damn near every race can fire, at minimum, a composite bow aimed in three/four seconds with no extra spells.
* Dodge + bows go so well together. You can 3x dodge for cheap and have no armor penalty so your DS is going to be massive.
* Since you're ranged you don't need to use Krynch which frees up Inner Harmory as your goto stance.
* Burst of swiftness, might be possible to run burst/surge + 1213 if you have the stamina and stamina regen. Good compliment to surge of strength for the strong races.
*EDIT* Wanted to reiterate the benefits I see a monk having with ranged.

haven't been paying too close of attention to monks outside of the UAC stuff but both the twc and 2hw look pretty damn nice (especially dem katars so you have UAC in your back pocket as well). The ranged too, curious to see if the thrown review (lol) ever finishes seems like a damn nice fit.
Spiffy, did you go katars from level 0 on up with that? Kinda makes me sad that MnM is inferior to MnS but i guess 120 is just too good to wait for.
I'm doing 40 spells 2x 2hd,1.8 cm, 2x pt, 3xdodge currently. Working well so far. Insanely high ds. TD issues though. Even with spells.

No, I never thought I'd do it but I converted my ranger. It was a combination of bad growth stats, not really liking UAC (fixskilled to it on ranger), and leveling a monk to 22 that I really liked. So, I've tried literally every build I can think of (except hurling) and it's really down to katars and ranged. Ranged is just stupid effective and gives me more spells but arrows are annoying. Katars are pretty effective and give me brawling as a fallback for things like foraging, searching for heirlooms, and killing higher mobs. I have waaaaaay higher DS with ranged, though. Sitting at like 360 self-spelled in offensive vs 280'ish with katars.

I think they intended 120 to make up for the CvA. I really wish 1202 added to CvA. It's not like we don't pay to have decent armor. 12 mental points per level is a pretty significant investment for armor especially when every build I've tried is already tapped on MTPs.

Anyone make (making) a serious run at a pure caster build w/ MnM? I know some people were screwing around with it at release, haven't seen anything some more testing has gone through and min/maxing more fleshed out (which i guess is kind of an answer to the question :))
Yeah I don't see pure being a viable option. Coupled with max of 1x spells at tremoundous cost. Low cs, 1201 is a joke spell, 1210 is nice but still mostly a setup spell.
So you'll have mana issues, cs issues and tp issues going pure.
subzero
12-25-2012, 11:05 AM
Yeah, there are no real staple attack spells in the minor list. 1201 is supposed to be the low level savant spell similar to 1101 for empaths.

I posted -18 because its mbp which is the max we can get.
I would love iron skin to be adjusted to include cvA but I highly doubt it. With a full compliment of wiZard spells. Minotaur magi still got a 40% chance to ward me (roughly). And we are about the same lvl. Seems a bit high to me considering the spells.
On a 2nd note. What do you guys prefer. Feint or cheap shots ? I've been using feint, but it seems like cheap shots can do the same and more. And also has another way to deal with casters.

Well, wizard spells aren't the ones that will do the best for your TD. Are you going in there with blues, too? Because that seems to work well for me and makes me mostly-equivalent to like-level foes.

Really, TD is our only weakness. We have incredible maneuver resistance (no armor penalty + 1220), great DS (3x dodge + no armor penalty), and pretty decent redux/armor (1202 + 3x PF). We have to have *some* weakness. Have you tried inner harmony or slippery mind?
Your right it does seem to be our real weakness. Also cmans seem to be a little weak. I'm 5x disarm and still can get disarmed fairly easy by minos. Been Playing with inner harmony, it's decent. Still haven't played with slippery mind. But may be worth a shot.

I'm a halfling as always so it seems pretty good to me. Been hunting pyrothags for a couple levels now and only ever gotten dinged once by their maneuver. Never got hit by stone giant rock throws or from legging them. Love me some halflings!

slippery mind is the answer to getting warded. 27% chance to avoid a ward spell altogether. and you also know you can silence things by aimed grappling the neck, right? doesn't work with everything but a good trick to have none the less.
EDIT:And I don't see why we wouldn't have the approproate CvA for our Iron Skin. The description of the spell is 'all the benefits of armor without the hinderance.'

Guess you could always get Slippery Mind x3 and Inner Harmony x3. Keep slipper mind up and then activate inner harmony when something nasty happens - like a web or bind. Would be a lot of CMAN points but might be worth it.

I'd assume so. Otherwise, why would you even get rank 3? If you can't activate it while bound there's no reason to use it.

Kastrel
12-26-2012, 04:38 PM
Probably gets rid of things like Calm or Silence. Those aren't total immobilizations.
I guess now is a really good time to work with this thread: http://forum.gsplayers.com/showthread.php?77307-Inner-Harmony/page2
Sounds like a LOT of things don't work. I'll make a post about it on the officials.
Kastrel
12-26-2012, 08:43 PM
From the officials:
It removes: deflection, saturation, calm, sleep, slow, bind, web, immolation, interference, frenzy. Basically, most spells that don't have a stun on them.
You *can not* use this stance while webbed, bound, slept, or otherwise incapacitated so I really do not see a point in getting the third rank. It's a very solid two rank CMAN, imo.
So its no Beseech. And except for Immolation, I can't see a single one of these (non-incapacitating) debuffs being such an emergency that you would need to switch stances rather than just wait for the next tick.

I dunno...i can see quite a bit of merit in immediately shaking off sleep, bind, or web in addition to immolation.

derp, my bad.
Fib talked me into trying out armor on a monk, basically drop lores and train up to chain or mbp. I went mbp because I don't cast during a hunt. I ended up gaining 33 td through cva vs enchanted robes. Lost roughly 50 ds due to the penalty to dodge.
I'm lvl 76 and hunt minos. I basically went from mino warrors not being able to hit me(in offensive) and magi being able to ward me at roughly 40% to minos being able to scratch me a bit and maji not being able to ward me.
I think its a fair trade off. But also should be noted this kills Slippery Mind and Evade Mastery although I feel evade mastery is overated with monks who have such high ds anyways.

I am going to experiment with 7x HCP MBP and with 4x robes both as brawlers and as ranged from the open. I could get higher AS if I commit to ranged by upping perception and ambush, but i am not going to do that until I am sure it will be worth it. Hmm, the drawback to training armor though is dealing with spell hinderance. Have ya'll found that to be significant? I use 1207 on most critters right now as a setup, 21 minimum seems annoying especially for emergencies when I have to pull out 1219 for some crowd control.

You could aim for chain hauberk and get 15. Thats not so bad, and quite in line with normal Monk Iron Skin training without enhancives. Of course, the CvA is -9. So its definitely a middle-road scenario. But it saves you a lot of TPs that it would take to get into plate, which could go towards other things.

Suddenly a lightning bolt explodes from the small thundercloud and strikes a lesser minotaur with a brilliant flash!
... 50 points of damage!
Electrical charge toasts foe! You get a sharp whiff of burning hair.
A low gurgling sound comes from deep within the chest of the lesser minotaur as he falls slack against the ground.

Heh, you might try some spiked and flaring arm accessories if they work with bearhug.
Also I tried a ranged build with my level 26 dwarf monk. I didn't train up armor use since I could barely afford the 2x ranged/perception and didn't want to drop rank 4 perfect self. Even with an ipantor bow he couldn't hit anything he aimed at reliably, even the legs. However it worked great otherwise, I think a ranged monk build would work great later on .. say 40+. I'll probably stick with 1202/lores though, even with the AvD I like all of the positives from it and having 6x hcp robes doesn't hurt either.
I'm so glad I converted over a dwarf, it seems to have the best synergy with a ranged monk. For now though I'm sticking with UAC, its much quicker until you can start eye popping with arrows.

What's the theme with the build? Like, is the archery a set up for UAC, or the other way around? Seems like you have a lot going on there, is all.
Although I suppose the Archery could be for killing, and the UAC for fun; that does seem what it's best suited for. Because it doesn't seem to be suited for power hunting/speed killing. But, seeing as I've been hunting the same way for years, am ill-equipped for UAC and haven't had to level my Monk [and gain the necessary experience] with it through the years to get where I'm at... I'm horribly biased in that regard. Which is why I'm going to pick up UAC on the side as my next post-cap goal. That way I can build up some experience with it, and gear for it, while still having my main hunting style.

I have enough exp to have two viable hunting styles. Everyone seems to like archery. Honestly I wanted to do UAC and train ambush and hide but I am a little short on TPs to fully 2x both, so I am just gonna make archery my second style. I dont even own a bow yet. lol
