View Full Version : Why AOL Sucks

For a long time I have been subject to dialup internet. Mostly because i havent really had many problems with it. Simplicity is good, change bad. Anyway, about 3 weeks ago the AOL icons on my desktop stopped working. I would have to log out, log back in and then try to restart AOL. The whole logging in process would easily take 5-10 minutes. AOL must have a sense of humor because once I was finally in they would boot me back off. This happened on occasion luckily until tonight. After maybe 30-45 minutes on the phone with some foreign lady the best advice she could give me was "remove AOL and reinstall it". Now we tried this two days ago and it didnt work then, guess what, it didnt work this time either. After this whole mess what does AOL do? They connect me to another department where they try to sell me some shitty camera and something else. What the fuck. Honestly, Im already pissed off about your company being a piece of shit and your program not working, do you really think you can convince me to buy something from you now? Use a little common sense.
On tuesday I was already planning on going down to comcast to get the supplies that I need to set up the cable internet in my house. Hopefully this will put an end to all of the AOhelL days in my house. Granted they did give us 2 free months for our troubles(YAY! )

The funny thing is that I still have the Install CD's for 3.1 and 4.

Did you upgrade to AOL 9.0 Optimized SE?
That's buggy as hell, and it's absolutely insane at how much shit it does to your computer. It tries to take over for Microsoft programs by making it your default browser. It'll try to take over from Norton by making it your anti-virus. It'll try to take over from AdAware/SpyWare by making it your spyware scanner. It'll even try to take over for WinAmp or whatever music player you use. And then, just for good measure, it'll kill your girlfriend and then rape you.
If you did upgrade to it, get rid of it. Thoroughly. Get rid of every last trace of it. Download Microsoft's old RegClean (you'll probably need to google it, since it's not Microsoft supported anymore,) to get rid of AOL registry entries. Then just go to download.com and download AOL 7 or 8.

It's probably free for the first minute and $50/hour afterward.
Fuck AOL.

Comcast is nice, except at low-traffic times (real early morning/late night), they go out alot. Atleast here.

I have never had any problems with them except once when there was an outage for 1 hour like a month ago. Although I'm right outside Philadelphia, so that might have something to do since that's where their main office is.

Sounds like AOL should change their slogan to "So hard to cancel, no wonder it's number 1."

Yeah I don't have any problem with Comcast either. I can't think of the last time the cable was down for an extended period of time.

Welcome to the land of High Speed Internet. Once you're iin, you'll never want to leave.
I have comcast as well and I haven't had any problems. I had one about two months ago, but I had an older modem and they came out and replaced it and its been workin fine ever since.
I've had both Roadrunner and Comcast and I have to say Comcast has less problems. I think we had a very short outage once on a weekend morning for about 20 minutes.
I started my AOL account back in 94 I think. The only reason I still have it is because I use it as my permanent email address. Plus, I use the 20MB per screen name web space.
Cable is expensivo, but, somehow I find a way to pay for it every month.

 I went down to Comcast and picked up the self-install kit and then hit up circuit city for wireless router etc... Took a little while but I finally have it all up and running. Its a little slow which im guessing is due to the distance I am from the router. Im still very satisfied with what I have as its faster than dialup was. Tomorrow after I have slept a bit Ill try to figure out a way to bring the router closer so I get better signal...

Most schools have insane Internet speeds, even in the dorms.
Especially the schools connected to Internet2.

AOL is virtually impossible to remove from your hard drive once it's on there. Fuckers.

I'm off-campus, but it runs through the on-campus network. There is a 45 mb/sec DS-3 router I believe I am going through and I think the servers on campus are Unix.
