View Full Version : How much time do you spend here?

If you were to average out the number of hours you spend here each day, what would it be? Also, have you been spending more or less time here as of recent?

I tend to pop on between issues at work. Not generally more than 5min or so at a time. It's rare that I'm on during the weekends unless someone tells me bots are posting stupid shit that I need to delete.

Most of my time is just getting tapatalk alerts and not seeing stuff I am interested in. I probably spend an hour a day overall actually reading things. I am spending less time recently.

Yeah this. There are sometimes days where all I do is click "new posts" a couple of times and nothing really good pops up so I hardly spend any time at all on the forums. Some days there are interesting topics going on getting a lot of attention so I would spend more time on the forums. Hard to say how much time I actually spend on the forums on average though, probably an hour or less.

I just check the recent posts, look for anything interesting, and maybe glance at the Marketplace. Well under an hour total per day.
The PC is one of 5 to 6 windows I have open at any given time on any computer. The only time I a not on PC is when I am not near a computer. In the car, out doing stuff, sleeping, etc.
PC, GSIV, FB, Twitter, Google (search, docs, finnance), and one window for general browsing.

I agree that this has become more about politics than anything else, which is sad because A) A lot of you lefties are fucking morons and B) I'm just as stupid for wasting time arguing with you instead of doing something more productive, like giving medicine to a corpse.

The politicalness of this forum is really what has drawn me away from it. I just got me degree in political science as well as finishing working with a few different campaigns and a PAC. Now I'm organizing a few Youth Leadership Seminars. The blatant idiocy from both sides of the aisle here is outstanding. Keep it up though, because it's inspiring a lot of good people to get involved in politics to get rid of your BS.

It's because of the election season. I'm sure it'll die down soon, but over the course of this election, people went way more right or way more left and it was quite unbearable.

That was a joke about the gigantic asses. Can you please point me to where I've made a serious personal insult towards you, at least within the past few months, a year, whatever? Pointing out how foolish you are being by calling others names doesn't count, as that's most certainly not a vindictive and nasty personal insult (which is your MO here for pretty much everyone you disagree with at any point, ever).

I know that my "create new tab" default info screen, which offers my regular sites as options, shows that I spend the most time on Players Corner. I find this odd, because I spend more time on the official forums than here, and the official forums are way lower on the list.
On the other hand, I often leave the main page up to register new posts (while not actively using the page), so that might account for it.

This was a suprising post. I've been impressed by you in the past, Ross, so what I have to say comes with all due respect.
If you can't handle (perceived or real) ignorance from others while they converse on topics of the day no amount of political science degrees is going to help you be successful in that field. People will be people. And by that I mean people will mostly live down to your expectations before you give them a chance to live up to them.
I understand some peoples frusteration with the politics folder. Sometimes it's a bit much in there and when I feel that way I usually just don't read it. Personally, if I can't gather a reasonable arguement to counter something I don't like, I'm going to keep my mouth shut on the subject (or post something funny). It has never occured to me to complain about the entire politics folder (or call everyone who posts in that folder asses) simply because I don't have the time, will (or perhaps intelligence?) to argue with those people I disagree with.

The difference about being actively involved and air-chair criticism is apple and orange. There is a lot of actual discussion going on, but here it's all generalizations and personal attacks, with the very very rare substantive conversation about the issue at hand. I guess that's the nature of internet discussion when it comes to sensitive issues; one can hide behind their relative anonymity and not have to feel the impact of their absurdness in real life. Imagine if in real life, every time you disagreed with someone, not politically, you simply called them a far right lunny or a hippy feminist who has no basis on life? Even in political discussion this would get you nowhere. It is absurd and it is infuriating, when daily, I'm involved in constant political debates and come here and see people acting like it's a MSNBC vs FOX news debate.

Obviously. Not everything discussed here is personal attacks and generalizations thoug. We have had some good discussions that did not degenerate and even when they do degenerate into insults and PB calling everyone retarded there are still neat ideas that are thrown out here and there.
I completely agree with you about anonymity though and I personally try to ignore parts of a conversation that I would not have face to face with these people. I think it's a good general rule to have and I'll admit that this perspective is one that I've "evolved" over time. I think we're all in different stages of realizing this though, or at least I hope so.
For me discussing politics is second nature. I'm discussing politics at all hours with everyone for every purpose (mostly work) and so my interest in the political forum here is just a natural extension of my life. Which brings me back to my suprise over your disdain for our little political nook here. Duck elbows Ross! Useful advice in life AND armchair politics.

I guess it's part of the nature of any subject. The more involved and the more you know, the harder it is to talk with people who aren't is involved and/or educated as you with the subject at hand. The unfortunate fact is that there is a large majority of the population that wants to be involved in politics. Imagine if everyone wanted to talk to you about your job and how it should be done and what is going on? I think that people should be doing that in politics, but they should also inform themselves and be less biased. And biased is the key word there. That's 100% the absurdity that I'm talking about.

Also, you do realize that calling someone who isn't fat, fat over and over isn't actually upsetting, right? I mean, keep on with it all you like. It's about as upsetting as you calling me a ginger (I have brown hair). Just FYI, you might want to find a new line if you really want to bother me.

Once again I completely disagree. And maybe it was my specific role as local closet Democrat lobbyist but I RELISHED every chance to chat about perspectives or just listen to people and what they thought on such and such issue. Bias is also just a part of the system. The fact that we have so many varying degrees of political bias in this country is actually what makes it great. Average Americans are remarkably centrist in their views in spite of everything. Where else can the Racist Nationalists and Pat Robertson style evangelists on the right and NARAL and Green Party on the left peacefully coexist? This country is wonderful and it is both in spite of and to the credit of our partisans.

Politics can't really be compared to any non official professions. Where the will of the public is concerned, everyone has a responsibility to be involved in the process and all involvement should always be encouraged, not discouraged...even at the level of petty internet discourse. "Public Office", "Public Official", "Public Service". These are all terms associated with the job a politician has, implying that a public official is a servant of the people. The only other careers I can compare these to would be of policemen and military, who are also in service of the people. My opinion as always is from a philosophical point of view as I believe looking at it from a practical point of view ie. tax dollars = right to vote is morally wrong.
In general I don't have a good opinion of people who think political discussion should be restricted in a non-professional environment. Progressive views, human rights and civil liberties have all been carried forward to the credit of protest and debate despite the wealthy resistance to the shift of power. Implying that your opinion (or vote) carries more weight because you are more knowledgable on a subject is also not new. I probably don't have to remind anyone here that the first people allowed to vote were white male property owners (only 10 percent of the nation at the time) and even though black males gained the right to vote in 1863 voter suppression laws such as literacy tests in the southern states still restricted the rights of the poor and uneducated until 1965. Be careful with intellectual elitism, it can take you to some dangerous places.
