I hope Disney can reverse the damage George Lucas has done to Star Wars (and to a lesser extent, Indiana Jones) without making it too sugary sweet.
They've traditionally had some good storytellers, but I don't know that many of them have been for "adult-ish" movies. Does anyone know what kind of films Disney makes for non-children centric audiences?

Lucas was probably thinking about this for a while but capital gains taxes go up at the end of the year. By selling now he saves himself a ton in taxes.

Disney got it for a good price. They spent $4B for Marvel and $7B for Pixar, and neither of those properties have a tech asset like ILM, who they were likely paying a fortune to anyway for Marvel films special effects. Anyone know what percentage ownership Lucas gets of Disney with 40 mil shares of stock?

If they base episodes 7-9 on the Timothy Zahn novels that took place 5 years after Return of the Jedi, it has great potential to be the ultimate in badassery.
Unfortunately I don't think they will, because all the actors are old as fuck now.
I actually wanted Lucas to have input on the prequels but not to write or direct them. He's not a very good writer or director, more of an idea man. I, for one, am looking forward to a Joss Whedon directed Star Wars film in 2015.

Sadly yes. Zahn's a much better writer than Lucas.

I guess they'll be Expanded Universe? Might be cool, but I'm not familiar with it beyond a couple games. I haven't really been excited for or wanted to see a Disney movie since I was a kid. I guess at worst they'll be another Episode I - III.

If they can keep recasting Bond, I don't see why they can't recast Luke Skywalker and Leia. I don't think "Oh man, Mark Hamill and Carey whatever make those characters.."
It would be weird to see a non-Harrison Ford Hans Solo though.

4 billion.
Hot damn.
Kathleen Kennedy, current Co-Chairman of Lucasfilm, will become President of Lucasfilm, reporting to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn. Additionally she will serve as the brand manager for Star Wars, working directly with Disney’s global lines of business to build, further integrate, and maximize the value of this global franchise. Ms. Kennedy will serve as executive producer on new Star Wars feature films, with George Lucas serving as creative consultant.

There's already been the suggestion of Nathan Fillion or Robert Downey Jr. for Han Solo and Armie Hammer for Luke.
As a side-note, 4 Billion is roughly what Disney paid to buy Marvel, and less than the 7.4 billion that they paid to acquire Pixar. Pixar was once a division of Lucasfilm, but Lucas sold it to Steve Jobs in 1986. So who knows what Lucasfilm would be worth if Pixar hadn't been sold, upwards of 11 billion at least.
From Wiki:
Jobs paid $5 million to George Lucas for technology rights and put them and $5 million cash as capital into the company.[ A factor contributing to Lucas' sale was an increase in cash flow difficulties following his 1983 divorce, which coincided with the sudden dropoff in revenues from Star Wars licenses following the release of Return of the Jedi. The newly independent company was headed by Dr. Edwin Catmull as President and Dr. Alvy Ray Smith as Executive Vice President. They were joined on the Board of Directors by Steve Jobs who was Chairman.
The market has been closed the past two days. I hope this helps the stock price. ;)

If Gosling were younger, I'm sure the Gosling/Fassbender Skywalker/Solo combo would kill the female demographic.

To the negative repper for my Steve jobs > George Lucas comment, Lucas sold Pixar for pennies. Pixar turned into a multi-billion dollar company. Steve jobs always had the ability to turn nothing into something and Lucas sat on the Star Wars universe for YEARS and churned out shit.
Seeing Lucas sell lucasfilm to Disney and to have them immediately announce plans for a continuous Star Wars movie franchise shows Lucas wasn't utilizing the Star Wars franchise properly. The movies he did produce after the originals sucked balls.
I guess I assumed all of that was evident and even the lamest of ducks would've noticed this but I was wrong.

Of the second set of three movies:
The first one royally sucked. I almost gave up on the entire franchise after this disaster.
The second one had it's moments but was overall a yawner.
The third one was fairly decent overall, but certainly did not live up to the standards of the original three.
I hope Disney does better.

Word from inside Hollywood will be that the films will follow the outline Lucas made for the next three. It has been said it wont follow the books post New Hope but then the ones with Mara Jade and Solo clan don't come right after those anyway. At least linearly. I'm stoked for it too. JJ is an awesome guy but you can expect a ton of secrecy until the release.

Isn't there one book that takes place like 5 minutes after the end of movie 6? I remember some line where Luke stresses that it was Vader who killed the Emperor. I don't remember if that was the series you guys are talking about.

This trilogy was the best of the Star Wars books I read. I think Lucas has been quoted somewhere, somewhen that he would never use those books in 7-9. Because the storyline for 1-3 was SO well done. ><
That being said, it would be awesome if JJ Abrams gave Lucas the finger and used them anyway.

The Heir to the Empire books take place a five years after the Deathstar is destroyed and the emperor is killed.
If the successful Abrams' Star Trek interpretation is any indication of his ability to rejuvenate a franchise then I expect his touch on Star Wars to be big. Looking forward to it. Disney stock is up $2 a share from the past few weeks.

Truce at Bakura? Aliens from outside the outer rim start a war/invasion at Bakura, which is actually an Empire held system still. This book happens weeks or months soon after the Return of the Jedi. The rebels can send one ship, some sort of light carrier with one x-wing squadron (possibly Rogue squadron), I believe. The Empire isn't exactly loaded with ships either, with one or two light cruiser types. Before the end of the book, the Empire turns on the Republic/Rebellion ship blowing it to hell but the main folks are on planet or some such bull. Beyond that, I forget. Luke saves the universe or some such, no doubt.
