For added versatility on physical bard builds?

If you don't need to use offensive spells in the field, game mechanics allow this to work with renewals not factoring in hinderance. Society abilities would still work too.

I can think of several occasions where this would be helpful. Up hunting to the point you can't ward, can't 1005, and are facing a high AS critter? Why not sing up some sonic full plate?

I also wonder if somebody has made a build around this concept. Go full on freakishly physical with a lance, wear sonic full plate, and forget using offensive spells. It would kind of be like a warrior but with a versatile option to use spells if needed. Regularly swing a lance in full plate with as much cman and PF as you can get. AS shouldn't be a problem. 1035 would be out, but haste imbeds could suffice. Also with more cman and maybe squeeze in some ambush, you could aim that lance at the head. Still have the benefits of regularly worn spell songs and could cast 425 and 430 before hunting. Just an idea.

I guess with that logic you could do air lore and go sword and board or even twc if points allow with some air lore for flares. I picked poles because a lance hits hard and you will need lots of tps to go physical (I thought no air lore).

Anyways, did anyone ever hunt in sonic full plate? I've modeled my bard simmilar to soulpieced with a sword and board build, albeit I'm far from cap and he was/is like 3x cap. I think last I saw he had 90 or 100 ranks in armor. He wouldnt need this because with all those points it would be restrictive not to cast spells.

Why would 1035 be out? Unless that song is different and I haven't noticed because I don't wear heavy armor, you don't lose anything for songs failed due to hindrance. Just keep trying until it casts.

Even at 140 ranks I do believe you would have a very high chance for failure. It's not the fact that you waste mana 1035 would be out, it's the fact odds are you would try 10 times (30 seconds of soft casting RT) before it worked..

I do, and very happy with it.

1009 has too many benefits with air lore for me to pass up. I can kill things fast with ohe weapons, and in case I need the oomph I mstrike. Even without awesome sonic flares...2 longsword strikes in 5, two handaxe strikes in 6, or two shortsword strikes in 4 > one lance strike in 5. The numbers skew even more with haste and/or 1035. The build works really well. Call shields pussy all you want but I love the DS, versatility of OHEs with solid weapon bases, and can still kill quickly.

According to Krakiipedia the max hindrance for bards in full plate is 50%, and there is no RT for hindrance failures on bard songs. It shouldn't be any issue keeping 1035 up, especially if you use a script to fire off attempts quickly.

The more I think of it, the less beneficial 140 ranks in armor becomes.

I was trying to think of a way you could use song of noise with it, and thus making a level playing field since you can't cast. It COULD work if you use your own armor. You would need a lot of telepathy and high influence for long song durations. Before songs renew, use a script on timer to stop singing song of noise. Then you would need to go to a safe place to remove the plate, start song of noise again, and put it back on. Sonic armor wouldn't work because if you sing the armor, you can't sing song of noise (or be able to cast reliably) and vice versa.

Does a failed cast not give cast rt? Never paid attention and learned something new.

I guess it could then with a script that spams it if that were the case.

So it looks like I was wrong about one thing, I guess 50% is the minimum hindrance, not maximum. But just to see what it was like, I sent my pure bard on a hunt wearing sonic ASG 20 - 96% hindrance, and it only took me a little over 3 minutes to go from muddled to fried. A script to use sounds would absolutely work fine.

Damn that is daunting... Bards have so many things to train in post cap. Did you use sword and board the whole time? Your build was an inspiration to me. Of course since I'm not capped, I just 1x dodge and shield. I also made 30 ranks of mstrike and 60 in armor by 48. Mstrike does wonders with sonic flares and since I cant afford to use 1035 reliably yet, I figured moc was a good choice. Went to 40 ranks in bard songs first and working on 400s now until 430. It's going to take awhile, but I'm a giant using a shield and can still hunt well without the boost from 425/430.

So perhaps full plate could be an option to any build that can afford the armor cost? Almost seems too powerful. Shhhh.

Hey Soulpieced, the only thing I don't understand is why the 50 ranks of brawling? With 75 ranks of manipulation, I can't immagine a time when you would have an open cast. Maybe just in case you get dispelled so that you have a little DS? Or was that a project to get 202 ranks so you can sing up katars?

Nice.

I guess the overall point is, with the mechanics of bard songs and failed casts (no cast rt + no mana loss) and a good scripts, why haven't more bards taken advantage of heavier armor than augmented chain? The only real loss would be the lost ability to ewave. Wearing plate armor is a crazy benefit compared to that small loss.

But that's the thing...failed casts don't matter and you could casts almost as fast with less armor ranks. If you replaced 'incant 1030 / prep 1030 cast at xxx' with a lich script that spams it, you could acomplish the same thing. Theoretically, you could drop ranks to the minimum man hinderance for hauberk (what is that 90 ranks?), keep your same armor, use those points elsewhere, and still be just as good as long you don't 410. If it worked for a pure build with 96% hinderance, it should definately work for you.

Well, I should point out, that my bard isn't hunting a capped area. Going to hit level 70 in about 23 minutes and hunting in Wyneb at the moment. I don't know if that 3-4 potential seconds of spamming failures instead of casting could cause more death than ASG 20 armor would save. I think I might have to stick that in my post cap goals and maybe check it out, a full plate wearing pure bard.

I'm sure that kind of time is unacceptable for someone who needs to cast 1030 at the higher hunting grounds.

Once I hit level 69, I'm going to try a fixskill and give a full on physical build a whirl. I like the idea of using all 3 sonic equipments, and try out an anti-magic build centered around song of noise. I'll have to play with the numbers, but should look something like this:

.75x dodge
2x edge
1x shield
2x armor (stop at 140 ranks for full plate)
1x air lore
About 20 ranks telepathy
30 or 35 ranks of mstrike
1x hp
1x spells - all bard songs for longer song durations, DS, and more
1x cman
1x plus all extra points in PF

The idea is to use song of noise vs magic critters and 1005 / 1035 / etc. on critters that I don't need noise. I'm kinda going for an ultimate defensive build but can still kill quickly with sonic flares. It would also be the most intensive sonic equipment build made. I think it could do well soloing war camps. I have a pocket wizard so might as well say eff 400s.

Probably will take a year to get there at the rate I'm playing the game. I wonder if anyone around 70 - cap (not crazy post cap) who is in GoS can spare a fixskill to see if this works well.

The whole build would be best for soloing war camps and running 1017 in full plate. Dump all spell ranks into bard base. This will give long renewal times, DS, limit the multi song penalty, and I think more ranks probably increase the effectiveness of 1017 but not sure on that.

I've done something simmilar before and like using 1017 in camps. It really works well, and 20 minutes plus inside the camp I only see maybe 1 or 2 spells go through. Casters become completely harmless. Then all you have to deal with are the square types and that is when full plate will really shine. You might not be the fastest killer, but very few things should be able to touch you. The greatest threat will be creature manuevers, but unless they kill you with plate you should survive.

With sonic full plate, you have magic resistant 7x 18lbs of the best armor class possible. With 1017 it also acts like that super rare armor that absorbs magic but it works even better. AS might be lower than most bards with no 425, but nothing a wizard cast of strength and some pure potions can't fix. Maybe also add some strength enhancing greaves, helmet, etc. Also, I do believe imbeds still work with 1017 running, so add a few ranks of miu and carry some haste trinkets. Also GOS sigils should work just fine, so use those.

What do you think on the effectiveness of this build? Anyone 69+ willing to spend a fixskill to try it out?

Also, getting a rogue to give an adjustment for armored evasion should give even more ridiculous ammounts of DS. Spells can't hurt you. Swings can't hurt you. Might get the occasional headbutt, eye poke, sweep, tackle, etc. but even stunned proned and in RT you should have a great chance of survival. Can always sigil of escape in the rare oh shit situation.

I wouldn't create a post 70 bard without 425/430, first of all. There's really no reason not to. So you can't cast in the field in full plate but losing those two spells is detrimental overall. Spells and weapons will hurt a bard. We're not warriors. Our redux simply isn't on par with theirs. Sigil of escape would be your only route out, since repeatedly trying to cast 1040/1020/410 won't save you if your hindrance rolls keep screwing you. I don't see this being viable. For a level or five, playing with it...maybe. Over the course of a year, I think you'd get sick of it.

It is indeed a specialized build. I say swings shouldn't hurt because with sonic shield, sonic plate, and a bunch of DS when you dump everything into bard spell songs from 1010 and 1019, plus society sigils (hcp - might as well have it constantly running since you can afford major protection and not using offensive spells), plus semidux, and then throw in a full wiz spell up...I don't think the grim will be able to hit you by a meaningful endroll to begin with. They might prone, but hcw 7x plate and everything above you should have a great chance to survive those rare stuns and rt locks. They might be little scratches. A warrior has better redux, but this build should have far surperior DS.

I say casts wont hurt because very few will be sucessful with 1017 up. In my experience with 1017 and camps, it really almost makes the casters harmless.

My theory is that putting all in bard songs is much more important than 425/430. The main reason for this is because I want really long song durations and to limit the multi song penalty as much as possible. Ideally I want 1006, 1007, 1009, 1010, 1012, 1014, 1019, and maybe even 1025 later if I could afford it. 1003 and 1017 will start after and stop before renewals. That is an ass load of songs to have up, and that's the main reason for this kind of build you need as many bard song ranks as you can. Sure I will lose some AS, maybe some DS but marginal DS loss at most. AS is fairly easy to come by with enhansives and some outside spells. Also being a giant helps bridge that AS gap. I don't need the CS or TD from 425/430 since I won't be casting or cast at. With all those songs and using my sigils, I'm going to be using all my mana, just not offensive spells. 400s would be a near cap or post cap goal.

I'll put my money where my mouth is and try a fixskill. I don't have the level to have 140 armor ranks, but with some minor adjustments I can be at this build and just test the theory with augmented chain. I personaly love camping. If it works like my hypothesis, I'll carry it all the way to cap and beyond. At 69 I can do another fixskill to pick up the armor ranks. Stay tuned this evening for my posted skills and a log of a camp that tests the effectiveness of this type hunting. I'll try to throw in stats like % of failed critter casts, time it takes from clear as a bell to friend, wounds, etc.

I'm ignorant on armored evasion and didn't consult krakiipedia. Not really sure the best choice for armor adjustment, but one of them would surely help.

What cmans are you looking into for the build? Disarm is outta the question, obviously - but will offensive cmans be out of the question as well from wearing full plate? Does that pretty much leave Cunning defense and combat mastery? Interesting build - id like to know how it works out for ya.

Feint is a must have against casters. Then I would go Cdef. After that it might be a choice between hamstring or sweep (mostly for defensive purposes on the grim using them, so maybe just 3 ranks each?) I'm always a fan of taking the first two cheap ranks for combat movement or whatever for the extra 4 DS.

Offensive cmans should work just fine, but bards have few available that work well. I wish we had wspec or surge of strength, but alas. Feint is a definite must though.

My build now won't be truly what I want it because I'm only 48. I can't get 140 ranks of armor yet, but otherwise it will be close. I'll be at a disadvantage without the plate, shorter song durations / larger multi song penalty, and 1 more level I'll have an effective size reduction to for dodging from my air lore. It should be enough to roughly test the theory though on how well I can hunt without offensive spells, without 425, and my idea to use song of noise as the cornerstone of the build.

I don't think so as long as you train in your armor? I want the full 140 ranks to train off rt and to the minimum man penalty before I make that leap. I think as long as I do that, feint shouldnt be any less effective.

Didn't change much except put all spell ranks into bard, and I had a small 7 ranks in arcane symbols that I don't need (moved those points to add a little more to perception and gain 2 ranks of telepathy).

Will attempt and post later tonight a sample hunt of a warcamp using just my songs (with a spellup of course) and running 1017.

So this currently puts me at a hair over 7 minutes of song length and I can also have an exact total of 7 songs active going without having to spend any more mana on the multi-song penalty.

This allows me to use 1006, 1007, 1009, 1010, 1012, 1014, and 1019. My renewal cost is 63 mana. I will run a script to start and stop 1003 + 1017 so that won't be factored into renewals, and that's another 20 mana. So every 7 minutes I need to have 83 mana points available.

I can't run constant major bane and major protection, but with 21 more trains (63 more max mana, larger mana pulses, more stamina = more times i can use sigil of power, longer song time, and by then I could maybe throw in song of power) I should be there.

Ok, have some logs to post. You won't see crazy death spamming but using just the songs I outlined and song of noise is incredibly effective.

Some rough stats:

clear as a bell to fried in 7 minutes (7 seems to be the lucky number right now)

Orc War Camp of 168 cleared in 56 minutes. I went back to town a few times for some minor wound healing and also to sit and absorb the experience which is not included in that time.

% of failed cast by critters = Don't know as I haven't done the math, but it is very high. The whole time I was in the camp. Pretty much everything failed from critters except I did see a few dark clouds form and twice I was warded by a cleric's rage spell. Casters were a joke.

Loot - nothing special found but I netted nearly 76k in gems, coins, magic items, etc.

What gave me the most trouble? Big, big swarms which pushed my DS down. I suffered some long stun / rt locks / times prone, but it never got out of control. This is where the sonic full plate would be really come in handy. With sonic full plate and a little cunning defense I don't think I would have much of a chance of dying. Also keep in mind the whole time I didn't use major protection once and that is in augmented chain.

This build and setup works very well. It is not true that the best defense is a fast killing offense. This might not be the fastest, but you can reliably solo war camps with little to no chance of dying. 1017 works AMAZING in camps and would be even better in sonic full plate.

Tomorrow I am going to try against a shaman to see how effective 1017 works on a higher level grim pure.

Last of my hunting. I did get dispelled from a sorceror at this point with cloak of shadows, so my DS is missing thurfels, silveries, and brights. This is a good indicator that you can see the effectiveness of 1017. I tried to bold anytime I saw a gesture, and from this only one spell activated out of many.

Last before I go to bed...this is a really long log. At some point I hit a sorceror a few times and cloak of shadows dispelled some of the defensive spells and bravery I had on. You will see I was knocked down / RT locked / prone quite a few times. Still, at no point was I in danger. I'm a bit rusty hunting camps and need to improve at killing things faster, but take the log for what is worth and how effective 1017 is and not going the 425 route. Add in if I was wearing full plate and kept up major protection and you can see that minus some freak cast that could manage to activate and one-shot kill me, I'd pretty much be bullet proof.

Just did an analysis from the logs of grimswarm faileds casts:

41 total grim cast attempt from the two logs
39 failed
2 successful
1017 seems to block 95% (.94818)

What I need more than anything is better manuever defense. Nearly all of their cmans were successful against me. I'm going to start double training in PF and get the first few ranks of Cdef over the next few levels. Training for plate would help on those situations I am prone and stunned. It's one of those things to might as well have since I won't be casting in the battlefield.

I hate to lose that crowd decimation with 1030, you really need something for when you have 5-6 in the room. Since your noise is already so effective, have you considered stopping song training for a bit to go up to 60 ranks of MOC? An extra target for open strikes and an extra foe ignored seems to play into your strategy well.

I have considered it, yes. MoC helps both with the mstrikes and also mitigating FoF for when 6 + are in the room.

The problem is, I don't see how I can fit it in and I have so many other things that can benefit. Bards are full of choices. As you can see, my traing is all into what I have now and very few ranks in any tertiary skills. My major training goals, beyond my core training, to level 70 are going to be something like this:

1) Get more ranks of PF (start 2xing and throw in extra PTPs when I can to get as close to full 2x as I can go)

2) I need some ranks of MIU so I can activate haste imbeds reliably. I think this could have a more profound impact for crowd control then going that high in MOC at a much less cost. I need to figure that rank number out based on augmented chain, my stats, and haste being the spell to activate via rub.

3) Get 5 more ranks of MOC for a total of 35 (go from 3 to 4 target mstrike unfocused)

At 69 or 70, I'm going to fixskills to get 140 ranks of armor (full 2x at that level). At that point I'll have to evaluate where to pull from in order to add the 80 ranks I need. I think I'm also going to gear up at that time and spend the coins on max light high enchant padded/flaring and or fusion plate. The reason being is that I have no encumbrance issues being a giant, and the elemental resistance won't help much if they can't cast at me. I have some things to sell (like good weapons) that I won't ever need since I'm committed to sonic weapon. This will also free up more mana, and 1014 is the single most song that would suck if it were dispelled.

To answer the question, I think taking MOC higher than 35 ranks will have to be a post cap goal. The first priorities will be the armor ranks and then being 2x PF. I would probably consider that before going over 1x spells though. Just not enough points to go around.

I guess the main point of my post was suggesting pulling some points from spell training. If you are going to fixskill, why not try with .75x songs before you go all the way up? With such a physical build and planning on having noise going you're not using other offensive spells, and your weapon and shield will max out anyway. You only need enough song ranks for noise to be effective and your DS to be high enough. If you find that .75, .8, even .9x trained in spells is enough to meet that goal you could find higher value places for those points and can fill it out post-cap.

Gotcha.

Well I am still resistant to doing that and for a few reasons:

1). Not sure if less bard ranks would make noise less effective. I already fixskilled. Krakiipedia offers little insight to this spell and I don't think the player community has tested it much. My guess is that both level and bard songs factor into the success.

2). Beyond the DS, bard songs give me a lot more. Most importantly that I know, song of luck activation. Also renewal times and more songs I can add without the multi penalty. I want to get to the point of wearing all my songs, constantly keeping up sigils, and even using offensive sigils.

3). MOC is rather expensive and I believe I can only 1x in it anyway. To get 85 ranks I would have to be 85 trains minimum.

4). If trinkets work with noise, which I do believe so but will test, a less expensive and likely better solution for crowds will be MIU training. 410 + haste + a few 4 target open mstrikes will clear crowds fast.

5). RT on mstrikes. It's already to the point now of diminishing returns with mstriking. I am a giant and thus slow. The RT it takes for 2 target focused and 3 or 4 unfocused is high enough for me.

I've heard rumours about some physicaly freaky builds that might have been under 1x spells, but didn't know anyone who personaly did it. Every bard build I know has at least 1x spells, simply because we have the lowest spell training cost of semis. Skipping one level of spells only nets you an additional 17 MTPs. I can't think of anything you can spend those 17 points on that will provide anything near the advantage of 1 spell rank. 1 spell rank offers on bard base more effectiveness with a lot of songs, 1 CS, .5 DS from 1010, half a dodge rank from 1019, longer song time, less multi song penalty, the list goes on. On the 400 side past 430, each rank nets more DS, TD, AS, CS, and better use of 410, plus I'm sure I'm missing other benefits. On both that is all bonuses on top of learning new spells to use. For the cost, you simply can't do better. A pure profession at least doubles in spells...even the most physical warmage builds because you can't spend those points more effectively.

Yeah I post a lot of details.

Exactly my point in this thread. For bard builds that can get away with a short delay from a simple lich script to push through failures, and accepting that the 400s can't be cast in the field, I'm surprised I don't see any bards wearing full plate.

The other part of this thread is the effectiveness of noise (1017) in warcamps in general, and how well this could also compliment a bard wearing full plate . I don't have the 140 ranks I need for plate, but my research shows 1017 to nearly eliminate the threat of casters...which is huge.

I just did a camp last night of 127 orcs solo. It's almost too easy with 1017, which to my tests have a 95% chance to block casts at you from like level creatures ( fully 1x in bard songs)

An update to my camping and a very cool tactic: So to recap, I use 1017 in my current training with augmented chain. I found i can move one room and quickly incant 1035 when i need it. Noise works the same as song of peace in that it follows you like a floating disk that settles in a room. Moving one or two rooms if needed causes about a 3-7 second delay before the noise fills the room, which allows you to get off a cast of song of tonis. Then just move back to the room you came from, or wait for the swarm to charge in, and flurry your hasted attacks. Solves my crowd control without spending a single TP.
