View Full Version : Comic Books
Digging through my old collection. Finally going to do something with them.
What have other people done? Anyone have any success selling in bulk? Conventions? EBay?
I've got a plan. Just doing the sorting part of it now. Man what a trip down memory lane.
Finding some Dark Horse Hellboys and Sim City. Vertigo Sandman series.
Any collectors looking for anything?
Time to nerd out!

heh mine are stored in my barn, benefits of tons of storage space I suppose
My comic collection isn't as vast as it used to be but it's still a pretty good size. I haven't even thought of selling them. I mean... how can I be a Marvel girl without the Marvel COMICS? Inconceivable.

I looked into selling mine. Turns out they really aren't worth anything. Any comic book printed since the 80s isn't worth the paper its printed on. With a few exceptions of course.

Alas yes, the bottom has really fallen out of the collector's market in the last 5 years or so.

Back when I collected sports cards and comics, some of the local shop owners were crediting the internet for really putting a hurt on the market. When you can essentially trade globally from your seat at home, some of the 'rare'/hard-to-get factor is taken away, which is a big part of what makes these sort of things valuable. That was probably over fifteen years ago. On a side note, the comics started killing me when every other one started having 'special' covers that tripled the price.

Not so oddly I thought of Rojo when I found my four issue original Dark Horse series by Hewlett and Martin. She probably already has them.

Thanks. What does/did everyone read?
I have a lot of the DC Vertigo stuff from the 90s. Sandman, Hellblazer, Swamp Thing. I really liked JLA and JLE around that same time period. I had forgotten about Excalibur and Captain Britain. Not to mention Marvel Man by Alan Moore.

There are quite a few other factors contributing to the decline of value of collectibles like comics and cards.
1. In the 80s, people started to realize that these things could be worth more over time so they actually started to take care of them.
2. More issues are printed
3. Very few new brand name carrying characters have been developed
4. By and large, the industry pillars don't pump out comics that are worth dick and shit years down the road. They aren't creating new things that stick and they can't/won't kill off the ones they have. They always reset to a zero state so it doesn't matter if you're reading comics made this year or 5-10 years ago, the same characters are being recycled.
5. More freely available graphic novels. No one needs to hunt down issue X because it is the only place to read the content. If a story arc is a hit, they just collect it all and Amazon gets to sell it at a fraction of the cost of the MSRP of the normal comic.
Selling comics is a huge hassle. Listing fees on Ebay will eat you alive. Trying to sell bulk to retailers and I've been offered as little as like 7 to 20 bucks per long box. F that noise. I'd rather give them away. It isn't even worth dragging the boxes to a destination at that price.

Modern paper also tends to last forever, so the 1 million of a book that was printed in 1987 tons of them survive, old books decay because the paper was trash. And badically all main stream books are available either as CDs or thru online subs non books needed
Yaeh, I would blame the mass production of the late 80s and 90s for the drop in rarity. The internet IS making these books more available to trade across a wider audience and that certainly drops the rarity. However, these books are NOT on the web themselves. Meaning, you can not find the content of these books on the web anywhere, so that gives them SOME value.
Todd McFarlane's Spider-Man #1 is a perfect example. They cranked out millions of them, even with different covers, so they are worth crap. Only one of the 5 covers they published is worth anything and that was the one with the lowest publishing count.
I wonder if the rise of e-comics on tablets might eventually reverse the trend. Generally once people know things are valuable they aren't anymore. People threw out comics because they thought they were trash. If you want to own something valuable figure out what exactly it is that someone who is 15 right now want but cannot possibly afford. Buy some of those, wait 40 years.

Let's see...what does a 15 year old boy want but can't afford?
Somehow I doubt a hot 20 year old woman will hold her value after 40 years.

My grandparents sold my Dad's comics in the 1970s for $200 or so. Included were good copies of Daredevil #1, X-Men #1, and The Hulk #1. They thought they were really turning a profit on them. I feel your pain.
Me, I pretty much limit my collection to Conan the Barbarian comics and copies of original magazines of The Shadow these days.

X-men #25 blew my mind when I was a kid. Magneto ripped wolverines adamantium out. Professor x then mind-wiped magneto, which created onslaught. Loved that issue, my all time favorite. X-cutioners song was a cool storyline too

Trying to establish a baseline value for "rare" singles by vastly overcharging probably doesn't help anything, either.
Personally, I think a shift to force the market to adapt to the times is a good thing; I know we're pushing big to break into digital comics, since that does seem to be "new frontier" for the industry. So far, it's been a net positive.
Also:
Guess it did not faze your mom when people snatched up all that stuff for $1 each and was 'sold out'.
Could be horribly misinterpreted. Just sayin'.

I might pick up some of the black & white TMNT if you have those. Or I might fill in a few holes in my Spawn stuff if you've got em. I think Badger was the only comic I ever collected to completion.

Biggest issue I have with digital comics is the same as with digital books.(Though comics are not quite as bad as novels) The pricing and trying to justify to myself at least that spending on a digital copy priced equal to spending that same amount on the physical(tangible) copy of the same item is a valid pricepoint. I feel like the intanginble's price should be lower, a lot lower than they often are now adays as a digital copy. Using my tablet or computer to view them though is quite nice in many ways, colors wont fade, pages wont tear or get damaged, hopefully they wont be lost.
I think it's going to have to be something we all will need to get used to or adjust to though, because sooner or later the digital copy is probably going to be the only copy of many items. ANyway, for now though I'll enjoy my printed books and comics. At least til some of the digital prices come down.

You know... I remember my comic dealer showing me a copy of TMNT a long ass time ago. I think it was in black and white like most other independents. I did not buy it though. To this day they never appealed to me. Not sure why.
I found a Batman/Spawn crossover by Miller/McFarlane. I'm not done digging yet so I'll PM you when I find my other Spawn books.
Any one pick up the recent Infinity series by Marvel? I thought it was really well done. Yeah, they did the whole Avengers crossover but still, as a storyline, it was pretty epic. Good writing, paneling, and art.

I have 3 cases of comics (mostly Spiderman) that I bought when I was a kid through like 25-30. I have most of them with cardboard and plastic sleeves, but I didn't really take care of them back then, so many have some spine creases and such. Last time I went through the collection, I figured about $10,000 worth.. but that was probably 10 years or so ago. Probably worth the same today.
My wife asks me every year during this time what I am planning on doing with them... She doesn't understand!

Some stuff has really gone up in value. Some stuff down. It's worth taking a look occasionally. My baseball memorabilia and early stuff (T-206s) have gone up, but a lot of my stuff after the mid 80s, the values have totally tanked.

Yeah, most of my stuff is 90's Vertigo and not worth much. I have three boxes that I am pretty sure are only good for recycling at this point. So I am just storing the three other boxes that I have.
I've been to the shops to check out whats going on in the comic world recently. Marvel is really pushing the whole Avengers thing pretty hard. The Infinity series was pretty good though. Next big crossover series is Inhumanity featuring the Inhumans.
Been enjoying a few recent titles lately.
Magneto has his own book now. Gritty.
Sandman has a new title written by Gaiman. Mind blower.
Silver Surfer is being written and drawn by the husband and wife team Allred. Waiting to see how that goes.
Mike Mignola is doing Hellboy in Hell. Any fan of Mignola will love this.
I do like the new Thor series from Marvel. Good art. Good writing. Cheesy, but comics usually are.
Someone told me to pick up Old Man Logan. Blew me away. Hands down one of the best stories out of the Marvel universe in a long time.
Blackbolt has his own book now. Really cool art and halfway decent story and supporting characters. They are on #3 so easy to catch up on.
Still reading Thor. I like the writing by Aaron and the art by Dauterman.
Dr. Strange main title just switched over to a new artist and writer. Not thrilled. Up until last month it was Aaron and Bachallo and it was awesome. Another title with Strange is Dr. Strange and the Sorcerers Supreme which has been very entertaining. The writer and artist on that one are really playing up the whole comic book genre.
Guardian's of the Galaxy has a few titles but I am enjoying The Adventures Of. On the 5th issue with great art and writing.
Saga continues to be one of my favorites. Totally original, again great art and writing. Good character development.
Unfortunately Rat Girls has a new artist. Not crazy about it.
Black Panther has turned out to be a yawn. It's all talking, politics, and intrigue. No action!

You just reminded me I have some of those. Going to have to dig them out.
My pick for 07-12-17...
Doctor Strange and the Sorcerers Supreme #10. Been enjoying this title. Strange and other Sorcerers Supreme from different time lines use magic and mysticism to fight supernatural threats. This issue starts a new story arc set in an alternate future with the X-Men. Who doesn't love alternate future X-Men stories? This book reminds me of the original Ditko stories with Strange tripping through psychedelic landscapes. In other words it gets trippy.
Any you nerds recommend some compendiums of Marvel stuff that has the stories that the MCU are based on?
My kid's way into GoTG and I gave her a compendium of it a while back but she wants some new material.
infinity gauntlet collection, this is what the current generation of the MCU culminates into and will mark the beginning of a new generation of MCU characters and actors.

Might want to pick up some Thor current and recent past. Right now the original Thor can't pick up Mjolnir because he isn't worthy. The hammer has picked Dr. Jane Foster, who happens to have terminal cancer at the moment, as the new Thor. Before the current Jane story arc the stories were about Thor and based mainly in Midgard and the elven kingdoms. Entertaining stuff for LoTR types like us.
