French heat deaths 'could hit 5,000'

The French health minister has acknowledged that as many as 5,000 people could have died from the effects of heat in recent weeks.

While I understand that these were much higher temperatures than they have seen in a long time, they were not over 100 for the majority of the time.

The article mentions how some are trying to point to the 35 hour workweek as a handicap of the medical community when it came to dealing with the patient load.

I don't know, but it seems odd to me that that level of heat could wreak the havok that it did.

Well, it seems that they don't have air conditioning (because it never gets hot enough), and most of those people were old people in hospitals who would've died soon anyway, but died during the heat wave (and so the heat wave gets blamed).

Maybe if they wave white flags at the heat it'll go away.
