I recently switched to an open archer build. I finally found a nice set of Hauberk to wear as I have been told as an open archer you will need the extra protection. However, it seems that it droppped my ds significantly. Is this a result of the hauberk or should I be looking for another cause?

DS drop is most probably due to undertrained. Not enough of a weight difference for that to be the factor if it's a substantial loss. How many ranks do you have in armor I think it's 80 ranks for hauberk.

I also don't think you need in hauberk. I open arch my ranger and with 5x hauberk and 6x bow my DS usually stays well somewhere close to 380 (level 49). I can't remember the last time my ranger was hit unless I was down and stunned. One of the benefits of the heavier armors is a) hauberk is still better than heavily crit padded brig and b) the advantage to warding. That being said the advantage to heavily crit padded brig over hauberk is 1) it's fairly close to hauberk as far as crit modifiers and b) less chance of spell failure if fully trained. I guess my point is a lot to consider and dependent on how you play whether or not it's a change you feel you want to make and if you cast a lot or plan to it's one that really needs to be thought out.

There is no wrong set of armor to be in, you can make anything work. Find out which one you enjoy being in and stick with it. Although mechanically, there isn't much of a reason to wear anything less then doubles.

new to ranger class. Looking for build ideas. Ideas so far.
1)hider/ambusher/archer
2)sword and board/two hander giant?
3)heavy magic build/less physical
4)the idea for the char. is more of just a wondering merchant type char. I wanted to be able skin as well as possible so I assume I need a class with high dex? certain lores I need to work on? is trading still broken?
5)anyway like I said first go as a ranger and build ideas just throw em out. thx

What about TWC? Aren't they pretty good for that build?

As far as 1, 2 and 3. Really the build you chose is up to you, but ...Archer is really a tough build to start out with and is better saved for fixskilling after you are around level 40. It can be done earlier, but it's harder. Pure spell caster is pretty much ruled out completely until at least in the 60's train and even more suited for cap as rangers don't really have a low mana cost attack spell. Hide/ambush is easily done with a ranger and a viable option. Two hander I've not seen done with a ranger and I don't recall the tp's so you'd just have to check if you can make it work.
As far as 4 rangers end up being the best skinners in the game with the skinning spell and the really cheap cost of first aid and survival. Only other class that comes close is typically empaths.
My advice.. go sword and board and just grind out at as many levels as you can till your 30 days are up and then fixskill to the build you want. Most likely it's going to be archer or stay sword and board, but that's up to you. Traditional doesn't mean the only viable option. Look at the years worth of ranger build threads in the forum to get some more ideas.
