Well blow me down - it's started raining 30 minutes before the opening ceremony. Athletes are going to be drowned rats. Hope it all goes well though. I'm excited.
More importantly, i've got tickets for seven events including some top athletic events in 13 days time.
Off to London tomorrow to savour the atmosphere and to enjoy the first three events.... Still got to find out what the hell handball is all about.
Damn, i'm excited as heck!
Anyone else going?

I didn't notice that, but I did notice that quite a few North African and Middle Eastern countries had shooters as their flag bearers. Horrid irony.

SPOILER ALERT
There is some huge drama going on at the pool. A Canadian official did a late DQ of Tae-Hwan in the 400m free. He was favored to win gold and his DQ allows a Canadian into the finals. There is a meeting going on right now to sort this out, but they are refusing to allow video to see if he false started. BS

For the last three years, he's slacked off. He has skipped 2-3 practices a week, dropped off his weight training, and when he is at practice, he's loafed. My friend who trains with him told me that he didn't even want to go to this Olympics, but did so because of his mom and media pressure. He'll do fine in the 100 and 200 fly. Don't expect much else, though.

Okay. Do any one of us know what it feels like to be the best in the world at something even once in our lives? No. Probably not. Phelps has. Of all the people in the world he has been the best at his chosen activity not once but multiple times. So I think he's allowed to sit on his ass now whenever he feels like it. Srs.

Am dog tired. 4 hours sleep after watching the opening ceremony and then went to to London by train for the three events I was going to see.
Overall impressions? Hell yeah baby! Brilliant. Well organised and exciting. Didn't get a chance to go to the Olympic Staduim - that happens on Tuesday.
I saw:
Table Tennis - fun and skillful
Judo - Interesting - was my first time watching this sport
Fencing - a tad boring to be honest watching women poking each other with pointy sticks but the Italians loved it - not surprising - Italian silver and gold. May have got bronze too.
Oh - saw my first medal ceremony. Please god let me be an an event where there's a Team GB winner. You'll here me scream in the west coast!

Watching some of the olympics on nbc is silly; watching cycling; and there's no commentary - so you dont know wtf you're seeing... are you showing me the leader? the person in last? in between?
Yeah, great that I can see it, but silly not to have commentary.

If you can get it, I think BBC1 is showing the Olympics. I heard their coverage is much, much better. From everything I read NBC butchered the opening games in terms of editing and coverage.

If you have a cable/satellite subscription to one of the major companies (a REAL subscription, not stealing it from your neighbor), you can sign up through nbcolympics.com for the massive coverage..which is supposed to include LIVE streaming, along with on-demand watching later (no idea what the pre-recorded coverage looks like). If you don't have your own legit TV subscription, see if a friend or family member can hook you up; once you get signed up, you can log in on multiple devices: computer, tablet, smartphone (which tempts me to take my daughter's tablet with me to the office this week, but I don't need any more distractions).
I tried to get my son to watch the swimming events yesterday, and kept telling him that this could be him in 16 years, but he wasn't interested :( Phelps seemed pretty out of it during interviews after the 400 IM final, but I figure he's in shock that he not only got smoked by Lochte, he also didn't win any medal at all. He's still amazing to watch, especially his butterfly form.
I like how how men's gymnastics team is looking, so long as they can get over some jitters. I'm feeling kinda sorry for Japan, Tanaka's fall from the high bar was BRUTAL (though not as brutal as USA's Mikulak, OWCH!). But I am glad to seeing us do so well.
On an amusing note.. I got my daughter to watch the men's 8 rowing prelim, and I told her to cheer for boat #2 (the USA team). But no, she couldn't cheer for them because they're 2 and she's not 2, she's 3.. so she has to cheer for #3. Fortunately, that was the Ukranian team, and we have some Ukranian heritage a few generations back, so I let her have it. But she seemed pretty excited by the rowing.

Who said he couldn't? At the present moment he's representing the U.S. at the Olympics and he's also using that opportunity to garner tons of money from sponsors. If he wants to sit on his ass he certainly has the right to do so, but I wonder how he feels when the sponsor money goes away.

The first rule of the Olympics is you don't talk about womens gymnastics.
The second rule of the Olympics is you don't talk about what they wear at womens gymnastics.
The third rule of the Olympics is you never ever under any circumstances look at the crowd at womens gymnastics.

Actually, next time you're wondering whether it was cool for Scottie to break Kukoc's will at the Olympics, peep his NBA salaries (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/p/pippesc01.html) at the bottom of the page. The Bulls never paid him more than $3.5m dollar in any given year. Crazy.

Considering that it's only the music that gets played, and not the words.. I wonder how many Brits get a kick out of the fact that the music is actually from a popular British song from the early 19th Century...and the official song of a club for amateur musicians at that. (Thanks to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Star-Spangled_Banner#John_Stafford_Smith.27s_music) for filling in the specifics; I could only remember that the music was British.)

You are so full of shit.
First rule of pedophiles is they cross all ages, races, and genders.
Second rule of pedophiles is don't categorize them. It allows pedophiles who don't fit into any of your neat categories to slip right by.
Third rule of pedophiles is that they are in every crowd at any event of any kind.
Anyway, I have to wonder, at what age should fans of the sport stay home (you know, if they are white and male) rather than risk being labeled a pedophile if they should attend a gymnastics event.

I decided gymnastics needs more medal events to rival swimming. How about handstand contests, queen of the beam (girls wrestle on beam until one falls, single elimination tournament), team tug of war (nothing to do w/ gymnastics, but I'd like to see it back in the Olympics), who can do the most giants, and tumble track

Still watch a few events, but to be honest its not the games that I used to watch. Will never be like the 1980's when we were still sending true amatures. So much has become irrelevant, who wants to watch a event that the outcome has been decided before it even starts.
Like Tiger Woods winning athlete of the century, I can name a few that are in a class by themselves. Jim Thorpe is truely the greatest athlete in my opinion. Even Lance Armstrong, though I do believe he did drugs. Its a shame that you can say about the sport. The ones that don't do drugs have already lost before the race has even started.
It was great to root for the underdog, and when they won it made the win all that much more special. Those days are gone forever. Welcome to the PC world of political cowards.
