Pretty wild double standard, Michael Johnson who is now a commentator said like what 3 weeks ago that Africans are great runners because of slavery? He wasnt even reprimanded and is still a commentator for the BBC for the olympics, this idiot cracks a distasteful joke and shes cut entirely within 3 days? Pretty much just repression of freedom of speech but since the greeks did it themselves I guess they have the right to be way overly sensitive if they want too.
And golden dawn or whatever its called has seats in greek parliament, being anti-immigration in Europe is not anything new.

Yikes. Pretty horrendous misquote that also is out of context.
What he said was:
All my life I believed I became an athlete through my own determination, but it's impossible to think that being descended from slaves hasn't left an imprint through the generations. ... Difficult as it was to hear, slavery has benefited descendants like me -- I believe there is a superior athletic gene in us. ... It's a fact that hasn't been discussed openly before. It's a taboo subject in the States but it is what it is. Why shouldn't we discuss it?
It's not a joke at all. It's a serious comment that happens to be factually correct (unless you think slave owners were ineffective at breeding their stock).

In no way did I say anything about double standards existing or not existing. Comments need to be taken in the context in which they're said. The speakers station (race, class, sexuality, etc) are taken into account in the context of a statement. Johnson, an Olympic athlete that is descended from slaves attributed part of his success to the fact that his ancestors were bred for strength, size, and endurance.
That is just not even remotely offensive.
The comment you said Johnson could have made without issue [niggers were fast because they're used to being chased by lions] would be very offensive because of the terminology used and the fact that it's not correct (African's don't dominate sprints, plus no one outruns a lion). It's just really grasping at straws to even advance the point you did. That's why it was so incredibly stupid.

Actually... you know you can't evolve the human race in a few generations like that. Selective breeding indeed. Natural evolution from thousands of years in Africa maybe, but not from some slave owner breeding program.
The real reason africans are faster has to do with leg length, which is a result of genetics of course, but not purposeful breeding.

Uh seriously dude? I mean, seriously? First of all, this was what I actually went to school for, though I didn't end up working in the field, well not afterwards, during I did work as a researched in a campus lab working on the arabidopsis thaliana genome, its a plant, okay, but really? You think Africans are strong because they were slaves? You think a period of a few hundred years many generations ago where supposedly some slave owners played Gregor Mendel and went all pea soup on some slaves changed the physical characteristics of an entire ethnicity? Neverminding that these same supposed slave owners were most definitely sharing their own average DNA with their slaves, frequently. You think this theory explains differences in sport achievement vs other genetic factors that arose from thousands of years of natural selection or random chance in Africa?
And you insult my intelligence? Nevermind my post included a link to a study by people from both Duke and Harvard, because for all you know I could just be a family dog that has been trained to type like Bob. I'm embarrassed for you.

Looks like pk is off the hook.
Let's see. Take a population of 1000. Throw them into a physically stressful and taxing environment, like the bottom of a slave ship, with a high mortality rate. Put the, say, 600 superior physical specimens remaining on auction. Work them to death, prevent family structures, and put the strongest men to stud with your neighbors strongest female. Then stud him with your other female's strongest neighbor. Repeat as necessary to recoup the costs of your investment. Take that generation and work it to death, taking the best specimens from that generation and repeating. All the while, remember, we're preventing natural family structures. Now we're got the next generation. And the next. Every 14-16 years we're producing the next generation of thoroughbred humans.
If it's the west African ancestory, and not the selective breeding, can you explain why the world's best sprinters are from the Americas and not west African. If slavery had "nothing" to do with it, as you suggest, wouldn't it be more evenly distributed?

It takes hundreds to thousands to tens of thousands of generations for phenotypes to be selected for, and because human females birth single babies and rarely multiples it'll take longer than in other species, meaning hundreds are probably not going to happen. Where are you even getting this from? I get that some guy on TV said it, do you have any actual scientific study?
Even if you could, if you had actually tried to do such a thing, you would have gotten inbreeding depression long before you built a new master race, or whatever it is you were trying to do. 1000 people is not enough, way too few, 10,000 would be too few, 100,000 would be too few. I'm sure some slave owners did such things, but it is not the reason why Tyson Gay runs fast. I guarantee you that. Not only do you fail to account for, the far more prevalent behavior of whites raping slaves, or the obvious undoing of this supposed breeding in the hundreds of years since (and yes, it would have been undone, because of the small population being absorbed into a giant one, given many many generations, a few thousand years, you could theoretically breed a small population subethnicity of humans who all shared the same traits you selected for, but as soon as they joined the rest of the human race it'd all be diluted - but even that needs thousands of years), you also fail to account for the millions of African Americans or Africans worldwide who were not descended from slaves. Not every black person in the us, or elsewhere is descended from slaves.
That theory is pretty full of holes.
As for why African Americans (who aren't necessary slave descendants) do better than some African Africans, well, maybe it has to do with where they live? African Africans still do pretty good in the olympics considering they don't have have the facilities, training budgets, or nutrition that US athletes enjoy, all through their childhood.

I both don't think that would have made a significant difference, it also doesn't explain again the skills of Africans who were never slaves or were never descended from slaves, and of course I simply don't think it happened.
I don't think slavers on the African coast went through villages and took only strong men. I believe strong men sold for more than average men, but I don't think average men were left off the boat. Free labor is free labor. Going to history, rather than genetics, as far as I can remember I believe slavers were rather undiscriminating on who they put in chains. True, the old, weak, frail, or sick, might be more likely to die on the ocean voyage, but that isn't going to result in some natural selection. The elderly would have already bred and passed on their genes, babies could grow into strong, weak, or average, so wouldn't skew anything anyway, and sicknesses afflict weak and strong alike. I won't claim to be a slave trade historian of course.

Jesus Christ this is just stupid. If I take two tall, muscular people and produce a child, is it more or less likely that their child will be tall and muscular?
That isn't the argument Keller. One child is not an entire ethnicity of people. You want a strong child for 1 generation, select strong parents. You want a strong child for 2 generations, select 4 strong parents, and make sure their kids have kids with each other. Keep squaring it for every generation you go, and of course your P generation was only specimens who were homozygous for the target traits right? Don't need any blue eyes slipping in.
Its so stupid it is is hardly even funny. Seriously, instead of taking a former track athlete as a genetics expert, read a book or something.
Meanwhile I've shown you an actual study by actual university scientists saying the actual reason is because of the physics of leg length, something mathematically quantifiable by the way. Something slave owners wouldn't have cared about. You think strength, the concern of the slave owner, and athletic ability are the same? Why do not blacks dominate wrestling or power lifting or world strongest man competitions? The way they do running and jumping sports? It has nothing to do with physical strength (and by the way physical strength has a lot more to do with nurture than nature). Are you going to say slave sellers held timed 50 meter sprints and football footwork drills? Where did they get the Seiko watches in the 1600s?
I think as much as I hate it when someone is wrong on the Internet, I gotta stop trying to fight the ignorance, only so much time in a day. If you want to believe that thousands of years of isolation thousands of years ago that resulted in the evolution that brought on ethnic changes such as skin and hair color had absolutely no other affect on any other human phenotype related to athletic performance and instead differences in ethnic athleticism are a result of a few hundred years of slavery on a couple dozen generations of a small subsection of african descendants... if you want to believe that then I will leave you to your knitting and say a prayer for our public schools.
This isn't X men, evolution does not speed up or happen quickly. Extreme temporary adversity does not spur faster evolution, you don't "remember what grandpa went through and become stronger). Evolution happens when a phenotype gives a slight benefit to survival (generally survival to breeding age, or the ability to successfully get your offspring to breeding age) that, because of probabilities, over thousands of generations, becomes a trait to a species or isolated population group. Actual scientists have actually studied how long it actually takes for phenotypes to become prevalent, not in humans of course because we breed so slowly it'd take forever but even in mice it takes that long. So don't be a retard.

I'm not quite sure why you keep talking about evolution.
We're talking about selective breeding. It's not some sort of natural selection; it's the selection of mates and the repetitive breeding to produce physically superior progeny.
I am fine with someone saying that west Africans' have longer legs and therefore are better runners than Europeans. That is not even relevant to the point I am making.
The point I am making is that the selective breeding of slaves from west Africa resulted in a physically elite stock of west African descendants in the Americas.

I'm not taking a side in the descendents from slaves are super humans argument or anything but I don't think the point you're trying to make is actually a point :/
Crossbreeding two dogs to produce a new species (for lack of a better term) would be more akin to an Asian and a Mexican breeding and their offspring looking neither Asian or Mexican (was that racist? Am I off the team now too?)
On the other hand, don't smart parents usually produce smart children? Strong/tall parents produce strong/tall children?

Keller already made my point actually much better than I could have. I was just trying to get crb to internalize the facts so that he could reach a selective breeding conclusion and get off evolution as a topic which I'm not sure has anything to do with anything.

It was maybe 3am when I was watching the first medal event, women's air rifle, and when they were showing the last shot the commentator said this about the chinese lady that won.

... why would an air rifle competitor be solving math problems? Do you think that you would have heard that line for any other country?
"That Roman won't need merchant scales to measure out how much he won that medal!"
"That German doesn't need any number of scientific instruments to figure out he's getting a medal!"
"That Frenchman doesn't need to go on strike to understand his medal win!"
"That black man from America doesn't need a TI-83 to know that he just took the gold!"

The announcer said she doesn't need an abacus to know she won the gold.
I'm not sure which rifle event this was but according to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/10_metre_air_rifle) the 10 meter air rifle event is scored as follows:
The course of fire is an unlimited number of sighter shots followed by 60 competition shots for men or 40 competition shots for women, all fired within 105 minutes for men or 75 minutes for women. During this initial or qualification phase a maximum of 10 points are awarded for each shot. The top eight shooters follow this with a final 10 shots – each scored to a maximum of 10.9 – with the cumulative score determining the winner. The maximum of 10.9 is derived from an additional set of 10 rings within the center 10 point circle, increasing in 0.1 point value as the rings approach the center of the target. The competition is won by the shooter who reaches the highest aggregate score (qualification + final score).
I'll be honest even with an abacus I have no idea what's going on here. I think the announcer was just saying she did so well that there is no question she won. It was a pretty stupid thing to say but I wouldn't say it was "racist." I believe racism requires intent, I don't think he was really suggesting that Chinese do math problems all day or that women are too stupid to count without using an abacus.

I believe racism requires intent.
Not necessarily.
A word or phrase can be seen as racist without always meaning that the user is racist. Sometimes the user just doesn't know, or that particular scenario that the phrase was used makes it racist.
edit: Thinking about it more, I kind of separated what you said slightly in my response. Pointing to an individual and stating they are racist, I can agree with needing intent. Saying a phrase or word can be considered racist, based on the general connotation, doesn't always require intent.

That's what I mean. The word or phrase can be racist but if the person saying it is just ignorant and doesn't realize it's racist then I don't think the person is a racist.
Although looking back at the original post he did say it was "unintentional" racism so I guess he wasn't calling the announcer a racist. My bad.

Yikes, it does read like that, right? No, I'm not suggesting this at all. I apologize for my off the cuff sentence structure and grammar - at any given time I'm learning 3 languages at once & it ruins my ability to communicate effectively.
First I'm insulting our education standards if it produces people that murder their peers. It also produces a flawed system and individuals that do not know the difference between a Sikh and a Muslim. Part of the flawed system, I believe, is the request for disenfranchised groups to "stop being so sensitive". A parallel problem to this is shown when someone denies that there is a problem with American attitudes and instead we wave the super patriot flag of xenophobics. Ultimately I wish a humanitarian perspective was the American default.
Anyway. The announcer sounded pretty dumb. Like someone handed him a list of chinese things right before his session so that he could reference them. I'm sure there was some eye rolling with the locals.

You respond to complex issues with a one dimensional faux feminist outrage that I find absurd. You stereotype entire swaths of society while decrying the very same behavior from others. A lot of your posts have a mean edge masked with humor. Come on...if you are going to be mean, do it wholeheartedly, not in such a pansy ass way. Oh and the constant self-referential anecdotes are boring. Why do you feel the need to constantly point out that you have carried and used guns? It's not that interesting or unusual.
Anyway I think, if you ever get over yourself, you might be an interesting person. In the meantime, you are just a minor annoyance.

Interesting. Most of this seems pretty ignorant and ridiculous. For instance, what do you know about my life that you can say my outrage is false? I'm solid in my convictions. My life is a map of how to stand up for what you believe. Can you say the same for yourself? What do you even believe in? Do you even know?
And this is a discussion board. Everyone has self-referential anecdotes, and why shouldnt we? If we enjoy our lives and we want to share it with others there are several places to do that on this board, threads you have even started yourself. We should have more of those and less of this sort of thing, imho. Hmmm. Now that I think about it... At this point the only thing I know about you is that don't post about yourself, you can't hold a conversation without insulting someone and dislike it when others do. I think that tells me all I need to know, doesn't it?
I suggest you be a little less hung up on my life and focus on enjoying your own, that way when others overshare their own personal happiness you wont take it as such a personal insult.

Nah. Talk about guns is fine. It's the instant outrage and automatic assumption that most things men say have sexist motivations that bothers me. Humans have a tendency to project their own thought processes onto others - we interpret things in ways that make sense to us, which naturally imposes our own filter on it. You are so upset by gender inequality that it's like a sheet of water pouring over the top of your "filter." Meh. I would say I have studied gender inequality to such a fundamental level to the point that I see it everywhere it actually exists and most others that have not had 3 gender courses and untold numbers of volunteer hours with victimized women would not see the things I see when I look at a situation. Is it possible that all that time, effort, and emotion poured into the situation makes you more likely to look there first for motivation when you come across something you don't like? We think in terms of what we know. A repressed middle-eastern housewife's first thought when her husband is angry may be that she did something wrong and deserves to be beaten for it. My first thought when SR is angry is that some schmuck on the internets said/did something dumb. She and I both looked at the same situation (angry significant other with no indication as to cause), and came up with totally different motivations. That's normal human thought process, based on our different life experiences. Yours likely reacts in the same way, with your life experiences guiding it toward what you have spent a large amount of time studying.

And wait, SR gets visibly angry over internet people?
No, not really. It was just something I threw in there to illustrate my point. He grumps over retards if they do something to annoy him, but he doesn't actually get angry. It was probably a bad thing for me to use in my comparison, but hopefully it at least showed what I meant it to show.

Heeee! That's still reactionary.

Remember, I have seen some of your (mistaken) neg reps... ;)

Interesting. Most of this seems pretty ignorant and ridiculous. For instance, what do you know about my life that you can say my outrage is false? I'm solid in my convictions.
Convictions? So that's what we are calling bitter passive aggressive bitchiness now? Good to know.
It's not an original observation that I enjoy a good insult. But I don't try to mask them with textual hugs and smilies or whimpering self-justifications. Can you say the same?
The number of times I've seen Tisket insult someone vs the number of times I've seen Rojo do it are quite drastic and aren't very comparable.
Do you ever get a post the first time you read it? Just wondering.

Tisket lol. Passive agressive bitchness.....known as tact and diplomacy the world over.
But for those who can't do passive agressive bitchiness there is always simply agressive bitchiness.
Oh no, I'm doing it again!

Whoa whoa, hold up there. Tact and diplomacy would be to not have any sort of bitchiness, passive aggressive or otherwise.

Yes, there are. But bitchiness is never a required undertone.
