This post is a downer, so sorry in advance.
I'm usually a lurker on these boards, but today I just needed to get this one out.
My dog died yesterday, she was a nearly 5 months old german shepherd who was still teething. Not much more than a baby. In fact, she was just going to the vet to get spayed as most dogs do.
However, she had the horrible misfortune of being allergic to valium and ketamine, the drugs my vet used to put her under so they could spay her.
She was dead before they even got a chance to cut her once.
They tried everything they could, including trying to massage her heart, but she was already gone.
I just needed to get that out. If it's even possible, please try to get your dogs tested for those allergies. It's extremely rare, but it sucks if your dog is the 1 out of 10,000 that has them.
Thanks for reading.

Arctal, I'm so sorry. I'm sure most of us here have experienced the loss of a pet, but it's especially hard to lose one so young. :(

I can't imagine the shock and sorrow. My condolences.
That sucks hardcore. I'm sorry to hear about that Arctal as I know what youre going through. Two months ago our black lab retriever of 15 years passed on. It's surprising how much a pet means to you when they're no longer with you.

That vet owes you a dog.

I feel for ya. I had to put my dog down several months ago when his hips got too arthritic for him to walk. It was probably easier because I knew it was coming but it still sucked. I'm still finding his toys and shit around, you won't be able to get away from it for a while.
I agree with Anticor and Ranger. Why, if the dog had never been put under, didn't the Vet give him a test dose and check for reaction? Sounds to me like he was in a hurryand owes you for it.

Actually it IS supposed to be standard practice to test puppies/kittens for such allergies prior to their first time under anthesia.
That was the routine for my two dogs.
I think Geoff called it where the Vet was probably in a hurry and either forgot to do it as a precaution... or was simply negligent.
It is possible that you could make a case requiring restitution.

Thank you for all your kind words and support, they mean more to me than I can tell you right now.
The vet is actually my best friend's brother and a very good friend of mine. He didn't rush the surgery, in fact he went above and beyond to save her. I believe he's also eating the cost of the drugs and effort as well, which according to the price sheet was somewhere in the range of $500= $550.
The breeder I got the dog from called around to the vets she knew and they said pretty much the same thing: that there was nothing that could have been done. It was just an inherent risk with the surgery.
My vet actually took the rest of the day off (she died in the morning) and helped me bury her.
I'd love to be able to say that I can find someone to blame in all of this, but I can't. It was just horrible, horrible luck that a perfectly healthy dog died while under anesthesia.
She was a wonderful dog and I loved her dearly. She will be missed.
I am unsure whether allergies are genetic but if so I would hope the breeder you got your puppy from notifies all the people that bought puppies from that litter. Be a shame for them to go through the same thing.
