They hid the comments at the bottom, but when the story broke and I posted it, they were still changing the article around because they didn't know how many people were dead or wounded. At the bottom, the FIRST fucking comment for it was a rant about the NRA and guns. It wasn't even an "OMG THATS HORRIBLE!!" or anything....it was ...FUCK YOU NRA I HATE YOU YOU DID THIS.

Not to mention in a theater its dark as hell without the smoke. You likely would have to trample a couple of dozen people to get out quickly. I noticed on the news reports it seemed like tons of people were shot in the legs too which might mean stadium seating which is even harder to get out of.

Asshole at ABC tried to make this political. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/20/brian-ross-tea-party-colorado-shooting_n_1689471.html)

"There's a Jim Holmes of Aurora, Colorado, page on the Colorado Tea party site as well, talking about him joining the Tea Party last year," Ross said. "Now, we don't know if this is the same Jim Holmes. But it's Jim Holmes of Aurora, Colorado."

The page that Ross seems to have been looking at has no identifiable information about the person on it other than his name.

After President Obama's remarks on the shooting, Ross returned to air to give more information about Holmes' background and clarified his earlier report. "An earlier report that I had was incorrect that he was connected with the Tea Party in fact that’s a different Jim Holmes," he said. "He was not connected to the Tea Party and what we do know about him is he is a 24 year old white male who went to Colorado for a PHD."

Do these people even try anymore? The guy had the same name and he thought that was enough to suggest a link? Good thing the shooter's name wasn't John Smith, imagine the shit storm that would have caused.

I agree... especially in this manner:

ABC News and correspondent Brian Ross apologized Friday after Ross suggested on air that the Colorado mass shooting suspect could be tied to the Tea Party. As the name of the suspect, identified as 24-year-old James Holmes, first emerged Friday morning, Ross reported on ABC News that he'd found a web page for a "Jim Holmes" on a Colorado Tea Party site. "There is a Jim Holmes of Aurora, Colorado, page on the Colorado Tea Party site as well, talking about him joining the Tea Party last year," Ross reported. He added: "Now we don't know if this is the same Jim Holmes, but it's Jim Holmes of Aurora, Colo." That man is not the same Jim Holmes. The Colorado Tea Party Patriots, whose website Ross was looking at, put out a statement criticizing Ross for even floating the possibility -- noting the Jim Holmes with the Tea Party group is 52 years old and not the same person. "The attempts of some media organizations to characterize the shooter as a Tea Party member without having made any effort to contact our organization are shameless and reprehensible," the group said in a statement. Ross clarified on air Friday, as ABC News issued a formal apology. "An earlier ABC News broadcast report suggested that a Jim Holmes of a Colorado Tea Party organization might be the suspect, but that report was incorrect. ABC News and Brian Ross apologize for the mistake, and for disseminating that information before it was properly vetted," the statement said. On air later in the morning, Ross also said: "An earlier report that I had was incorrect that he was connected with the Tea Party. In fact, that's a different Jim Holmes. He was not connected to the Tea Party and what we do know about him is he is a 24-year-old white male who went to Colorado for a Ph.D."At least 12 people were killed in the shooting overnight at an Aurora movie theater, while at least 50 were injured. Details are still emerging about the suspect, who is in custody.

Summary
Colorado was once one of our "Gold Star" open carry states. However, Denver filed and won a suit challenging the states excellent preemption law. Consequently, both open carry and unlicensed open car carry in Denver are prohibited. There are reports that other localities are planning to follow suit. Currently, outside of Denver, car carry is unrestricted and localities are almost completely preempted in enforcing firearms restrictions, and must post specific facilities which are off limits to open carry.

Surviving a gunshot in body armor would have been a whole lot easier than continuing a rampage after being shot in body armor. If someone HAD decided to double-tap him, and could hit him through the smoke and gas, he still might have dropped his shit and headed for the doors, cause he sure as fuck would not have wanted it to happen again. Not really arguing a point here, just tossing out what I think about his body armor.

4a6c1
07-20-2012, 07:54 PM
Taking a gunshot in body armor is not nothing. An average civilian psychotic would probably fall to the ground and cry, or at least miss a half a dozen targets before another average civilian could punch him in the face.

The solution is something like a PTA tied handgun education program for women and children.

Gelston
07-20-2012, 07:58 PM
I'm more thinking that since there was tear gas in the room, it would definitely effect people trying to return fire. And depending on the body armor, return fire with a pistol wouldn't really stop him as much, especially if he was on certain drugs or even pumped full of adrenaline. See LA Bank shoot out.

I think you're giving too much credit to the adrenaline reactions of the average squishy civilian. Most people don't just turn on FIGHT when they need it. Most people have a flight reaction. As much as I'm dying to know details about why this guy did it, I truly hope the judge denies the request for cameras in the courtroom. It sickens me that the media will sell millions/billions in advertising while covering this tragedy, and that piece of garbage will achieve pop culture infamy.

My thoughts exactly, and I've little doubt that the infamy portion factored into the decision to whatever degree to perpetrate the act. Professional sports figured this kind of thing out awhile ago. If a fan runs onto the field, they do not televise it since that will only encourage such actions. Report the event, but do not mention the name or televise the face of the suspect. In my time as a journalist, we treated the Westboro church cult the same way. Don't give them any press. That's what they want.

The irrational side of me says just go Judge Dredd on such obvious perpetrators in instances such as this and pronounce guilt and carry out a death sentence on the scene and never release the name or face of the individual.

As long as the media keeps turning these killers into celebrities, attention-seeking losers from around the globe will continue to butcher society to get their 15 minutes of fame. Search for the Dr. Park Dietz interviews on this topic, he nails it.

From a news story on my browser. It was taken at a gathering of the witnesses. I just hope the shirt choice of the guy on the right wasn't accidental:

I wonder if future editions of the Batman comic will somehow slant a storyline or otherwise reference the shooting.

Search for the Dr. Park Dietz interviews on this topic, he nails it.The thing is, people have been committing atrocities for the express purpose of being famous for literally millennia. We even have an eponymous case: Herostratus of Ephesus, hundreds of years before the birth of Christ. It may also be a result of modern media, but it is fundamentally a result of human nature.

His case is doubly interesting because the authorities of the time, grappling with the same concerns many express today, subjected him to damnatio memoriae, rubbing out his name for all time (and executed him, of course). Obviously they were unsuccessful if we know about the guy today, and surely it was a lot easier to erase someone from existence before the dawn of 24/7 news, the Internet, etc.

At a Batman premier you can expect to see a few shirts like that.

He bought 6,000 rounds of ammunition on the internet. That seems like a red flag.

That may be true but who in the world needs 6000 rounds? If its for hunting you must be a horrible shot to use that much ammo trying to hit a deer and shouldn't have a gun in the first place.

People need lots of ammo to make sure they are not a bad shot when it matters. It's called target practice.

Brown has hired attorney Donald Karpel to rep him. Karpel tells TMZ ... he is targeting 3 defendants.

1. The theater. Karpel claims it was negligent for the theater to have an emergency door in the front that was not alarmed or guarded. It's widely believed Holmes entered the theater with a ticket, propped the emergency door open from inside, went to his car and returned with guns.

2. Holmes' doctors. Karpel says it appears Holmes was on several medications -- prescribed by one or more doctors -- at the time of the shooting and he believes the docs did not properly monitor Holmes.

3. Warner Bros. Karpel says "Dark Knight Rises" was particularly violent and Holmes mimicked some of the action. The attorney says theater goers were helpless because they thought the shooter was part of the movie. Karpel tells TMZ, "Somebody has to be responsible for the rampant violence that is shown today."

That's our legal system for you. I can't tell you how many times I daydream about a European system, instead of our American adversarial position. American legal scholars seem to think the adversarial system is the bee's knees, but I don't think I can agree.

Add in the Aurora PD and the National Guard too. Both exist to protect us - why weren't they doing their jobs?!? Maybe they should add all the actors in the movie too - they didn't have to take a contract for a film that portrayed such violence, right? And all the cameramen, prop guys, and everyone else associated with producing a major film. They all contributed to violence being shown to our tender, impressionable, unable-to-make-our-own-decision minds.
