The ways that choosing a deity will crop up for you independent of your RP would be
1. Type of flares seen from using 302..and probably divine wrath.
2. Color your eyes will flash when casting 313
3. Raise dead messaging is really quite cool when you view it third person. Side note, has anyone logged all the raise dead messaging somewhere? I can't say I've witnessed a raise by a cleric of each deity before.
4. Sanctuary you enter when casting 220.
5. Whether you are a bane or smite cleric depends on your choice. From KP-->Generally speaking Clerics converted to a Liabo Arkati receive Smite, and Clerics converted to a Lornon deity will receive Bane. Both are warding spells which have a base mana cost of 2.
6. Any personal reasons really would have to be up to you, deities can be as much a part of your character as you want them to be, though I'd say a cleric/paladin at least have to deal with the idea of a deity. The rest of the professions could dismiss them entirely if they chose.

That was a great response thank you, I will look around see if I can find some of the messaging for those spells.

You're probably long gone from this thread, but just to clarify a few things...
302- Smite/Bane will always be plasma flares regardless of your deity. Bane will do full damage to living and half to undead (and cost 4 mana against undead). Smite will do the opposite and cost 4 against the living.
317- Divine Fury will have a deity flare plus a plasma flare. So if you don't want cold flares for hunting undead (lots of undead scoff at cold) then make sure you avoid that.
319- Divine Wrath will also have deity flares, and some deity's have a VERY WEAK 319. Eonak and Luukos for example, I never had any success with 319 (My cleric has gone through 3 different deity's) I found Koar to have an extremely strong 319. It can do 50-100 damage base and a 50+ flare quite easily. Koar is lightning, so if you don't want to set off gas in the bowels or bounce lightning off water then avoid him.
The rest is roleplay as Mort describes.

Thanks Ceno,
My cleric's deity was actually already set to Koar from back in the days and it has been working out pretty descently, I'm making a note about the bowels and water.
