I need information regarding the new Staff system for GS4, I know there will be a redux system based on Magical skills... Lores, research, rune reading, Magic item use, and mana control. But beyond that, will staves be able to be used for blocking? for parrying? And are they going to be better than the old sword/shield method? Even for a halfling? Anyone have any information?

Not much has been released so far. I sure hope there is a chance for block and parry.

There is no magical redux as far as I know. The stave system will be a magical staff which can be used for defense or limited offense. Its stats will be determined by your Arcane Symbol, Spells, MIU, Lores etc. Theoretically, a warrior can use and create a magical stave. It shall provide less overall DS than the edged/shield route, but this is offset by being a cheaper form of defense TP wise.

So you can die because you got stunned because you don't have your 4x shield...but you can have lots of spells doing it :)
-Artha, probably going to weapons route.

Umm no, not for a warrior. It wouldnt be a very good path for a warrior to take as they can't get atleast 10 ranks of magical skills Each level. Maybe 2-3 skills which are much more expensive then the shield/sword path.

I think this is an interesting option. So far from what I have seen on the test server, there is a lot more to train in and it might be valuable to give up on the shield and weapon. I'm not convinced yet but definitely curious.

My only problem with staves is that they'll probably be weaker than 0x stuff.
I have a 4x shield, and a 4x weapon. Just off that, I'll lose 60 from defensive, not to mention whatever the weapon ranks I have make up. Too big a loss for me.

I am planning on doing the weapon and shield route. Althought my testing has not been extensive, I have found the weapon\shield route to give me the most DS. For those who are planning on going the stave route I have two questions.
1) How are you going to kill critters at the young ages? Staves are extremely ineffective and you will have limited mana
2) When your stave is disarmed what are you going to use for protection?

<< I have found the weaponshield route to give me the most DS >>
I've been reading posts by Starsnuffer that show there is a -50DS difference between the max a stave user can attain versus sword/shield.
I do not believe the 50DS is a showstopper, but it should be addressed by Simu. In level-compressed GS4 it certainly means more than in GS3.
As for my feelings on your questions:
1. I am not too concerned for new characters. With skill migration they can start with a weapon and change later, and levels will be gained faster under the new EXP system.
2. What do we do now when disarmed?
