As the title suggests, I'm looking for a new roleplaying game. Dragonrealms is an obvious one for me to try, but I don't like the mechanics.
I don't care if it's graphical or text, free or pay, fantasy or space; I just want a new place to RP.
Thanks for any suggestions!

You can RP on the Gemstone Player's Corner Forum located here: http://forum.gsplayers.com
Look for Smythe.
http://www.mudconnect.com/
Have at it.

One thing to keep in mind, if you want some strict RP, you are best off with text based. I can only base that off the couple I've played or discussed but MMO graphical games simply don't lend themselves to the RP you are perhaps looking for. Even the so called RP servers aren't close to what you could accomplish in GS.
I have not played this but know of a couple who have: http://armageddon.org/
I don't know much about it but that as of a few years ago they were pretty serious about maintaining RP standards. No clue about game population. Best thing I can suggest is reading the website thoroughly and make an educated choice about playing it.

You could always do AOL chatrooms, but I'd look through mudconnect. I know that Split Infinity used to be pretty serious about RP, but their population is abysmal.

This. A lot of times local hobby shops and what not will have encounter nights, that is a good way to get into the game. I honestly have no idea where people advertise for local gaming, but it can be a lot of fun if you do find a good group.
That being said, doesn't Dark age of Camelot have RP only servers? I heard of some DMs using graphical RPGs as a means of generating their own world, not sure if it was this one or some other.
edited to add: i'm talking about D&D. No idea about LARPing.

LARP wise, there's big organizations and such. The Camarilla and One World By Night for World of Darkness stuff, NERO, Avalon, and Amtgard and other stuff for Role Models style fantasy LARP.

I lulz at people that LARP. Sorry, it's way too goofy. What I see is a bunch of grown adults playing dress up like little children.

Ebay and The Warstore are the best ways to keep costs down... other than walking into a hobby shop and straight stealin' some shit.
Also, Larpers are the bottom of the gaming hierarchy. Don't deliberately dive for the bottom. You can always try looking for an RPTools campaign that needs players- then you can RP like tabletop without actually having a tabletop, or friends nearby.
Edit: This forum is actually on the RPTools page for people looking for games- http://www.thetangledweb.net/forums/content.php

This is pretty good:

You have to pay a one-off fee for the program and it allows you to run, over the internet, a DnD (or other supported games platform) tabletop. Combined with Skype it can be a good way of getting a game running if you live in the middle of bumfuck nowhere.
Also, Adrianne Curry is the queen of Cosplay babes.

I don't think I knew about The Warstore. Kind of a pain in the ass that they aren't allowed to sell directly online *because GW blows* but they say their prices are always 20% lower which is pretty nice.

Meh. I haven't played GS in well over a year, and I don't exactly have the urge to come back. That being said with The Light Within, it's a story that I had in my head and I decided to run with it and make a game of it. I'm not outside running around like a goof ball pretending I can throw fireballs. Those days of childhood imagination are done and over with. Maybe if I was 12 again I might consider it. With tabletop, you can at least keep your geek inside of a private place. Where in LARP, you make an ass out of yourself in front of people in public. No thanks. You can keep that to yourselves. :)

The only form of larp I find acceptable are the kind where people are actually fighting... like SCA style, or battle reenactments.

Thanks for the suggestions, all! I'll check them out, plus I got PM recommendations for a few others. I'm sure I'll find something I like among them.
And yes, tabletop is fantastic, but my group only meets once per week. I've never tried LARP, but it's probably something I'd really enjoy. Hell, I got married at a RennFaire. It seems like there's a lot of quick math and number-tracking involved, though, and that's not something I'm good with at all. I'm surprised at the LARP-hate in a forum for a text-based RPG, but whatev. I guess there's close-minded folks everywhere.

As I said, Larp is the bottom of the heirarchy. Its what happens when people take their fantasy gaming too far. It's like the difference between a casual drug user and an addict... or the difference between someone who plays world of warcraft, and the korean kid who dies of dehydration playing world of warcraft.

Depends on the LARP. I'd put LARPers and WH40Kers above the typical D&D player.
It's all more social than the console or computer.

That's pretty sad. I'd say the things I have seen have been the opposite- normally it is a fat girl crammed into a velvet dress she has no business trying to fit into when it comes to looking at Larpers. Contrariwise, I've played d&d with some really sexy females. I call shenanigans.

Who died and made you the RP Gestapo? It's all different strokes for different folks. I'd say that LIVE ACTION RPers have a tremendous amount of guts to fly their freak flag and meet up with real people and express real emotions and have real experiences while online gamers just hide behind anonymity. I imagine that most of your lazy asses just don't want to get up out of a armchair and squeeze into a breastplate.

Nobody had to die for someone to form the RP Gestapo. It's a movement that grew naturally, as gamers with relatively normally social skills became angry with those who, lacking them utterly, were giving the rest of us a bad name. You see, LARPING is not about expressing real emotions and having real experiences- it is about precisely the opposite. That's where the roleplaying part of live action roleplaying comes in.
Also, as I am typically judged, I have no problem judging others. I'm sort of obligated, wouldn't you say?

I remember they set up a Rennfaire at the local SPAR (Shreveport Parks and Recreations). I was about 14 or 15 at the time and I used to ride my bike around there from time to time and I saw it. Nobody there would I consider hot, cute, or anything. It was probably an accurate description of the time period though, because judging by paintings from that time, all the people were ugly.

It varies too, but re-enacting can be a blast. It even made me enjoy traditional dancing. I also suspect Shreveport of having uglier Renn fans than certain other parts of the state.
Clarification:
I was mainly suggesting LARP because it tends to have a higher percentage of actual girls because I thought she might want friends, not conquests.

Those ones tend to run sort of like SCA fencing or heavy weapons fighting with some skill resolution on top.
The Vampire stuff usually doesn't involve direct touching or props touching, and runs off a single die and the World of Darkness system these days. I actually liked paper rock scissors/tie resolvers but you could game the system with a lot of people.
There's usually out of game time where you can meet people OOC.

That's why you don't do SCA. You can have a lot more fun in LARP. One of the better fantasy/weapon ones is depicted pretty accurately in the movie Role Models.
