Had an argument with a dude that's had tension with myself and my team for the past year at the time clock. At the apex of the blowout I blasted him with "Fuck off you banana eating mother fucker!" as a supervisor pulled me away.


He literally eats bananas all the fucking time. We've said it since like last October.

Now it's being called a racist comment. The shit is not nor intended to be racist... If I called him a wetback or spic or some shit okay.

I'm being punished over him starting a fight with me and being told it's racially charged.

One of the justifications for slavery was that Africans were less than human and lived in the trees like monkeys. It became quite common for non-blacks to refer to people of African descent as monkeys or apes, especially as an epithet. Older African-Americans or people that were socially aware in the 1960s (which may not include people that work with you day-to-day but MAY include people in your HR department), are quite sensitive to this comparison. When my nephew was young, he used to climb on everything. I made the mistake of calling him a monkey in front of my dad. OH BOY, was that a bad idea.

To someone who MAY NOT KNOW (Like the HR department) that it is a common part of your everyday banter at work to call him a "Banana eating motherfucker" and that he literally eats a banana daily, calling someone who is Dominican that during an argument looks like you are obliquely calling him a monkey (because monkeys eat bananas).

There was recently an incident where a banana peel was thrown at a black hockey player. Some people felt that was racially motivated. The thrower said he didn't even realize the player was black, he was just trying to distract the player and threw what he had.

ETA: As a matter of practice, I would completely stop calling him a "Banana eating motherfucker" during day-to-day banter. It basically sets your company up for a racial harassment lawsuit, especially if supervisors heard this nickname and did nothing about it. Everyone may agree it was because he literally eats bananas everyday, but a jury may view it as racially charged.

honestly I would have fired you for the comment racially charged or not. If the guy was out of line taking it to management would have been the way to handle it.. had it been violent or you felt you were in danger calling the police would have been the correct protocol. Offering to settle it at a neutral location outside or work could actually land you in handcuffs with an assault charge.

When I was a teenager about 20 years ago I had to apologize to referring to my black friend at work by "what's up dog?" At the time dog wasn't common enough to be considered a friend comment by everyone and some of the employees felt I was referring to a black guy as a dog and a lower life form than a white. Ever worked in a kitchen? My introduction to the working world included bending a guy over, when he was caught off guard, the sink, spraying him in his junk area with the dish washing hose and pretending to fuck him up the ass with a steel. I so thoroughly emasculated him he wouldn't look me in the eyes for the rest of my time working there (about a year and a half) but that was my response after 2 months of constant awful harassment. Honestly: I should have done it earlier, he was a fucker and deserved it.

I'm not soft by any means nor do I regret at all what I did but I definitely appreciated when I worked in environments where I didn't have to be on guard like that. I don't fault others for not wanting to be in that situation, by either removing themselves from said situation or educating themselves into situations where that isn't acceptable.

Reminds me of a time I had to suspend a guy. We were working late, was about midnight and one guy walks into his space to get something out of the printer and bends down in front of him. Other guy says in a gruff voice, "if we were in prison your ass would be mine!" Other guy didn't think it was funny. I thought it was just late night stress myself, but we had to give the guy a day without pay. Some folks above me wanted to fire him, which to me was crazy and an over reaction, so I made the case for less punishment. A few words from an otherwise stellar employee do not merit termination. It seems to me that a company concerned with legalities and sensitive to the possibility of future lawsuits from former (and current) employees would take the time to word such a letter in a way that satisfies those concerns.
