View Full Version : Katana rogue

So I rolled up a rogue that I want to use two weapons...one of which is a katana. In order to fit all the skills he needs to do this (namely, a buttload of points on 2x 2HW...) I find myself "skimping" some of the core skills.

2x TWC
.5x Armor
1x CM
2x OHE
2x 2HW
2x Ambush
1x PF
2x Dodging
2x Hiding
1x Perception

Obviously, the area I'm hurting the most is armor, though I was really hoping to go dodge-heavy with this guy. If I'm careful, can I push through with this plan, or is it just not feasible as it stands? Suggestions?

The training plan looks pretty good to me. I would have expected a build like that to be a bit more pressed (just from my experience with OHE/TWC and THW builds). I'm assuming this is mostly for fun since you'd be way better off (mechanically speaking) just using a maul.

It seems like the build would be effective. People tend to 1x-1.5x TWC if they are tight on points. You could even consider trimming ambush down to 1.5x. Those could put you in at about 1.5x armor. Seems like it would be pretty effective overall, though.

This will absolutely work. Just only fight in rooms that have a single mob in them, and ambush the head. If you can't 3x dodge or get heavy armor, you don't want to take the risk.

Hopefully you'll be able to use that strategy long enough that your stats will grow and you can start throwing points into 80 ranks of armor/3x dodge.

Thanks, guys.

I don't know why I didn't think of 1.5x TWC, I am totally aware of how those mechanics work. Derp. Dropping those ranks got me up to 1x Armor, and let me grab 10 ranks of Climbing just to get that out of the way.

I definitely try to limit myself to single-enemy encounters. I usually hide, ambush the left leg (90% of the time this results in a rank 3), and then pick them off at my leisure.

What should I do with my CMPs? I've got rank 1 Mobility and rank 1 Evasion mastery so far. Is Divert worthwhile? Seems like it might be useful to avoid swarms and all, but I never hear people talk about it much.

Get your 2nd rank of Mobility. While you plan on dealing with single-enemy encounters, having that 2nd rank will help tremendously. This has saved my ass repeatedly.

Vanish will be a lifesaver in the event critters swarm or gang up on you.

As you get older, work on Shadow Mastery & Silent Strike for the ability to stay hidden and attack. Although this will take a lot of CMP (rank 4-5 SMastery + Rank 4-5 Silent) for it to be effective.

Hope that helps some. Good luck with your build!

Pretty much my opinion. I'd lean more towards vanish than silent strike.

My opinion: Vanish is pretty stupid for melee/swinger builds, especially at only 2x S&H and without shadow mastery. The negative modifier to your hiding roll will cause more fails than is worth dealing with, especially once you climb into heavier armors. (I'm aware that at .5x armor, you're not wearing anything heavy any time soon, but... that's something you should work to fix.)

Both good suggestions.

I wasn't clear about the reasoning behind your THW choice. If you're only going to swing your katana one handed while swinging an OHE on the off-hand, you can drop the THW training altogether. Of course, if you're thinking of the option of stashing the off-hand weapon and going for a 2H GRIP on the katana, then I totally understand.

Katanas aren't bastard swords. If he were to do a build this stupid he'd need the THW.
