Given the outbreak of zombies in Florida and my new found enjoyment of skeet shooting, I've decided to buy a new shotgun.
I'm currently looking at Mossbergs and Weatherbys. I don't want to spend a fortune on this thing as it will only be used for skeet and home defense. My budget is to try and keep it under $1000.
Suggestions?

I personally would go with a benelli M4 shotgun because it's used by the US Marines and because it's awesome but that would run you around $1,500.

My final answer is mossberg thunder ranch. It's beautiful, upgraded and I want someone to tell me how it fires.

I've got a Mossberg 500 with several add-on's (sidesaddle (http://www.amazon.com/Tacstar-Sidesaddle-Fits-Mossberg-590Da/dp/B001AMZXQI/ref=sr_1_4?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1338517778&sr=1-4), stock (http://www.amazon.com/Speedfeed-Mossberg-Tactical-Magazine-Stock/dp/B00162WO7I/ref=sr_1_11?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1338517778&sr=1-11), sling (http://www.amazon.com/Uncle-Mikes-Detachable-Mossberg-12-Gauge/dp/B0002IOARE/ref=sr_1_6?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1338517778&sr=1-6)). Good price, solid piece of work, fires well and easy to clean.

Where are you going to keep it? Please consider this:
http://www.the-backup.com/
And do as the front page of that site tells you and get one for your wife's side of the bed too. Two shotguns aimed at the black zombie drug addict is better than 1.

Which is why The E constantly sets out milk and cookies in his place each night.

Almost all of the copy on that page is quote-worthy. Especially how "regarding children, the back-up is a rack." UM OK. What else were you going to tell the children it was? That your bed was actually the top of an underground tank that two shotguns are conveniently mounted on?

There are no civilian versions of the AA-12 as far as I know.

Holy shit. That AA-12 with exploding anti-personnel rounds is insane. "Fuck you, Robocop!" is the first thing that popped into my head. 4 shotgun shells a second with extreme reliability.

I would be more impressed with the AA-12 if it had a belt-feed option. The 300 rounds a minute is nice and all, but when the highest capacity magazine for it is 32 rounds.
Boom Boom Boom Boom CLICK. Hang on while I change this cumbersome magazine...almost...wait a sec...Okay...Boom Boom Boom...

Not suprisingly, my favorite AA 12 video is this one with the FPSRussia guy. He properly illustrates how elegant the weapon is. It can literally do anything. Also the mods and wet work.

I greatly prefer a semi-auto for sport shooting. Granted that I do more sporting clays and 5-stand than trap or skeet, but dropping a few hundred shells through a pump isn't nice on the shoulder. Even the light sport loads add up over time.
I like my 1100, but I've also had great results with the beretta and browning shotguns too.

If the problem in front of you isn't solved with 32 explosive anti-personnel rounds I would think less about reloading and more about running the fuck away. That, and I believe there are belt-fed versions, but they are typically attached to attack helicopters and what not. Go figure.

The issue with beltfeds is training people to LET GO OF THE DAMN TRIGGER AND LET THE BARREL COOLDOWN FFS.

That's the one thing I took away from firing the SAW in Basic Training. They tell you to say, "I need a burst" while firing and to let go for a second or two in between.

You joke, but on my trip to Afghanistan, I had to go through Fort Benning for
"Army" training, including the M-249. During the live fire, this was verbatim for what the instructor was yelling as he put lead down range.

Under 1k is easy for shotguns. I think your best bet would probably be a Remington 1100. I've been eyeing up Beretta's for a while.
You might be asking the wrong guy... I think if you want a HD shotgun, you'll be better off with any kind of pump on the basis of cost and reliability.
If you want to go target shooting and such (like I do), you'll probably want to pick up an auto. They're not hard to maintain and are much easier shooters.
Now that I think about it, just pick up a Rem 1100 Tactical and you'll be fine either way.
Or... You could be classy like me and rock an over/under.

That's the advice I've been hearing.. don't get a pump.
