View Full Version : Gemstone on a tablet?

As I'm currently considering getting a tablet, I was curious... is it possible to (realistically) play GS on one? I'm sure there are terminal-style interfaces (probably going with an Android tablet) out there, but are any of them "comfortable" enough to use for GS purposes? Or is there some other methodology that others have used in the past with success?

The setup I'm contemplating is a desktop set up with terminal services in my office at home, and using the tablet for evening living-room GS play. Is that something that's easily and reliably accomplished?

While this probably doesn't help you a lot I've used an iPad at my mother in laws to play GS using teamviewer. As long as you can live with the lag the rest is fine.

How significant is the lag? And would that be somewhat alleviated by being on the same wifi network?

1) Get book on Objective C
2) Loose all your hair as you learn to program in Objective C
3) Write iPad FE
4) Offer to sell FE to Simutronics
5) Get laughed at by Simutronics
6) Release FE on AppStore yourself
7) Get sued into oblivion by Simutronics
8) Sell all your possessions, including iPad, to pay off Simutronics
9) Banned from playing anything on Play.net as part of court judgement
10) Problem solved

Lag should be very minimal within the local network. And lag outside would depend on the ISPs of your home and the remote location. I've used RDP to play across town and had no trouble with lag at all.

Why not just get a netbook? They're just as portable as a tablet and don't require odd software or connection setups like a tablet does/would.

Honestly can't say... my mother in law lives in some podunk town in the middle of no where so the fact she has a cable modem getting 1.5mb is high tech for the area.

Playing on her connection the lag is bad enough I wouldn't hunt swarm areas (OTF, Bowels, etc) but outside of that with patience it was playable. Then again I was at my mother in laws and I was bored outta my mind so I may be more inclined to put up with more.

Assuming you have a decent internet connection you can use a remote PC app to just connect to your desktop and play through there. I use Splashtop on my iPad and can play Gemstone fine through it.
