View Full Version : Armor for a rogue?

Do capped rogues hunt in plate? Is there a concensus "best" armor for a capped rogue?
If you hunt in plate do you drop all fo your dodging ranks and buy a tower shield?
I am currently in Chain Hauberk, will make jump to MBP soon. Just kind of struggling with what I should be aiming for here.
thanks,

You can make arguments (and find proponents) for just about any armor type. Some love to proclaim their fondness for robes, some prefer full or double leather for spell hindrance issues.
That being said, I think most post-cap rogues prefer plate. You can get the ranks to wear it, so why not take advantage of it?

You should decide basically 2 things: (1) whether or not you want to use 410 in combat, and (2) whether you want to be an evasion-based build or not.
410 + evasive : Go no higher than brig (I do 54 ranks in doubles), get evade mastery
non-casting + evasive : Go no higher than brig, get evade mastery, 3x dodge
410 + non-evasive : Mid-range goal should be aug chain, end game in hauberk
non-casting + non-evasive : Mid-range goal should be MBP, end game in full plate
Those are roughly the permutations I've tried. All were with hiding. If you're one of those open rogues, you probably shouldn't go with one of the evasive builds.
All rogues should at least 1x dodge. It is said that there's no wrong way to train a rogue but going less than 1x dodge is wrong. I'd be hard pressed to suggest that any rogues go below 2x.

Thanks for the responses. I suppose I am going for option 3. Non evasive/ Non Casting. I have been a hide/ambush my whole career and dont plan on changing that.
My question about dodge was based on my understanding that plate incurs huge penalties to dodge and so wondered if it was worth still investing in.
It's so cheap 1X seems silly not to do but really wonder about the value of 2X (concidering I could be in plate much eaarlier if I 1X dodge).
I've also always been sword and board... so the quesation again comes up about shields. Should I get a tower shield for the added protection? Again at the cost of maneuverability.

Rogue builds that ignore stealth also tend to lean toward plate ASG.

MBP with 90 ranks of armor use is a pretty good spot to end up at, if you don't want to cast 410. Not nearly as costly as training off full plate, and with 90 ranks you can get a third rank of armored evasion (armored stealth won't help you, since you're in the plate group).
As for shields, a tower shield has a big dodge penalty, so if you've got more dodge ranks than shield ranks you'll want a small shield (buckler). If you have more shield than dodge ranks (you shouldn't as a rogue) you'll want a big shield.

I think it was Celephais a while back who did some dodge vs. shield tests for EBP and DS. I'd take a look there.
If you read KP, you'll see that armor results in a percentage penalty of AP/2 to dodge DS.

Also, something to note right now, since you mentioned that you used chain hauberk in the OP is that you can just jump into MBP right now. It's the same amount of ranks for hauberk as MBP rt-wise.

Even in plate you get some nice DS from dodge. I just have the plate to hinder me as I use two-handers but going from 2-3x dodge my DS went up by about 60 in offensive. If you are 1x dodge and 1x shield your best DS is still going to be with one of the smaller shield sizes, but you'd get more blocking from using a larger shield. I'd suggest finding some 4x shields and do some testing if you can't find any older posts on these boards that will help.
