As a whole, the nation's minority population continues to rise, following a higher-than-expected Hispanic count in the 2010 census. Minorities increased 1.9 percent to 114.1 million, or 36.6 percent of the total U.S. population, lifted by prior waves of immigration that brought in young families and boosted the number of Hispanic women in their prime childbearing years.


But a recent slowdown in the growth of the Hispanic and Asian populations is shifting notions on when the tipping point in U.S. diversity will come — the time when non-Hispanic whites become a minority. After 2010 census results suggested a crossover as early as 2040, demographers now believe the pivotal moment may be pushed back several years when new projections are released in December.

There's an increasing number of Mexican immigrants where I live in Georgia, but I think all the natives here are so accustomed to the Mexican chain restaurants that they wouldn't appreciate anything authentic. I'd almost forgotten the stark contrast until I was in California last month.

I guess the secret is to find out where the Mexicans eat.

Like the avocado stuffed with fajita meat and cheese, then breaded and deep fried that I had for lunch the other day. Amazingly good, but definitely Tex Mex, and not authentic Mexican.

Mexico is a pretty big country, so if you don't like one regional cuisine, you can try another and have a totally different experience. Just because their traditional cuisine isn't all smothered in cheese and deep fried doesn't make it not delicious. I'd kill to have access to mexican street vendors.

Loved me some barbacoa when I was in Mexico City. And yes street vendors there were pretty much awesome.

When I go anywhere I try to find hole in the wall food places instead of chains so when I was in Mexico I was loving life.

The best hispanic cuisine I've had was on the coast of Mexico about halfway in between Veracruz and Tampico. Those little farming villages are a century behind the times but the local seafood and vegetables that they cook in their outside pottery pits are fucking delish. I got home and I was looking at my apartment porch like .....hmmm "how can i build a cooking pit without my landlord noticing."
