Alright, so I got Grapple Flares on my weapon via Kronius last night and I have a few questions for all the experts out there.
First off some information about me: I'm a capped Paladin with an AS of 575 without spirit strike (Don't use it considering I don't have 290 armor ranks yet) I have 90 ranks in MoC and for hunting I use the standard 1615/1630 (I have 303 mana) then mstrike. I am max trained in PF and I also have a +14 stam recovery orb in my fusion plate with grapple flares. Add on top of that i'm in GoS, but currently only at rank 11. So onto my questions...
I am debating on getting some PP to upgrade this to 8X+. It seems like my AS already may be high enough (in the fact that spending 20+ million for 5 AS might be a waste) So what are some thought processes on this?
Next, GoS has a few symbols for temp crit weighting/padding. Does anyone know if these symbols' benefits will stack with my grapple flares on either my weapon or armor? I know this can't be done on a permanent basis my PP's or Merchants..but wondering if anyone has tested it in this situation.
Finally, Is there anyone else out there who has raffle grapple flares on their weapon? I'll get a chance to use this bad boy today, but i know my armor flares a ton. Trying to see if anyone has info on how often these flare via weapon and if there is a table out there I haven't found that shows how often it flares or if the percent chance of flaring increases with each miss. I am hoping it increases on each miss...because that is going to make Mstiking SEXY.

It isn't worth it for 5AS unless you just want to make that weapon as awesome as possible. If you aren't having an AS problem, there is even less reason.
GoS symbols stack on whatever you have, but the weighting is only good against hated enemies. Padding is good no matter what.

These them?
No, I thought GoS HCW only stacked if you are in a warcamp? Are you sure? I don't even know but am going to start GoS and would like to. That's what I was told.

GoS Sigils only work against hated enemies for the weighting. The padding works all the time.

Thanks for the info so far. Quick, I'm looking through the grapple chart and i'm thinking maybe some of these auction flares are more powerful or the chart is off. not sure. I'll show you what im talking about.
http://forum.gsplayers.com/showthread.php?t=67133
There is an example of armor grapple flares via auction here and the eye wound is:
A jungle troll swings a bamboo-hilted machete at you!
AS: +209 vs DS: +100 with AvD: +12 + d100 roll: +78 = +199
... and hits for 19 points of damage!
Weak slash to your lower back!
** Your coppery mithril platemail releases a twisted tendril of force at the jungle troll! **
... 30 points of damage!
Eye gouge, that hurt!
It is knocked to the ground!
The jungle troll is stunned!
According to the table you linked: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?hl=en&q=cache:wNU2dpI5lMkJ:http://www.krakiipedia.org/wiki/Grapple_critical_table%2Bgrapple%2Btable%2Bkrakii&gbv=2&gs_l=hp.3...781.5797.0.6015.20.9.0.4.0.0.610.1204. 5-2.2.0...0.0._XEea1Actb8&ct=clnk
That message should be a rank 2 crit that does 10 points of damage. Instead it does 30 points of damage as if it were a rank 6.
Any ideas anyone?

The troll probably has crit padding

If the troll had crit padding, wouldn't the damage shown be less?

Yeah, these are more violent instead of less ^
Anyone know a percentage in which the flares "activate?" I'm sure someone by now has kept a log either being hit by or hitting (really interesrted in the me hitting other monsters portion) mosters. At least that would give me a base roughtimation (I just made that shit up) of how often it flares on average... say per 1000 swings or something. Then form that maybe we would have to ask a GM if the percentage raises with each failure to activate via swinging like Paladin double plasma flares.

I don't think so. Dhairn still destroys me with a ton of demage
Dhairn thrusts with a sleek black pike at you!
AS: +791 vs DS: +406 with AvD: +40 + d100 roll: +60 = +485
... and hits for 180 points of damage!
Strike to left arm shatters elbow and severs forearm!
You are stunned for 8 rounds!

Crit padding doesn't really reduce damage, just ranks of criticals and it's kind of random. Damage padding will reduce damage but not increase critical ranks if I remember right. I could be totally off base here.

My concern is that the grapple table doesn't show a decrease across the board between the message, the rank crit, and the overall damage. If it was a rank 6 crit it would be 30 damage and if the crit divisor turned it into a rank 2 crit, then the damage would be 5 according to the table right? I'm going to have to pay attention to me armor flares now to see what happens. Anyone have some more armor grapple flares they have saved?
and WOW 791 AS is wickedely wild!

I'm also curious to see if the flares go off when I parry.

"And WOW you reached cap and still this retarded about how flares/padding/ and magnets work! Idiot."
A person neg repped me on this thread and that was their comment.
Notice how no one has yet to provide any details on if the chance for grapple flares to go off increases with each miss and what that might be, nor do we have anything concrete on the grapple table for merchant grapple flares (not based on prior spells - read the chart) Furthermore, no mention of it's base with parry. Looks like whoever neg repped me didn't have the answers either. You look pretty dumb pal. If all this is so readily available in its' entirety then have the balls to post the answers, THEN call me a retard and neg rep me. Otherwise stay in your shadow. So, where's your balls? Come out show yourself, and provide these answers.

1. When have flares EVER been activated by parries?
2. Flares are the same with very few exceptions. Most run from 1-50 damage. Grapple flares add knockdown/stuns and that's it.
3. Seriously, you claim to have capped but you ask Spooky type questions.
4. That neg rep wasn't from me, but I agree with most of it.

looks like you ddint read the posts above with the discrepancy on the table coupled with knockdown and merchant grapple flares...throw in the fact you didnt post a percentage change of the flares activating or whether or not the chance increases with each failure.... BTW, not everybody knows everything about this game...otherwise.. why the fuck would we ask questions? With the exception of a 3 month come back in 09 ive been away for over a decade. Sorry if while I was over in Iraq multiple times I wasn't studying up on Gemstone so that when I came back I could be smart on game math. I guess my priorities are out of whack, huh? How about you write me a thesis on your ability to direct air support and drop ordnance? Go ahead, show me how awesome you are at it. lol
grapple flares are just like any other flare they just have a better chance to knockdown stun, I doubt anyone has any actual numbers on the chance to do it but its greater than you're average flare. As far as how often it flares, I think its safe to assume it flares just as often as a drake falchion.
GoS sigil padding/weighting stacks with anything you're using for gear.

1. I'm sorry you didn't have any other opportunities for a solid paycheck.
2. You're welcome for said paycheck; coming from a tax paying American.
3. Having served 4 years myself, been married to a 6 year servicewoman, having a brother currently serving in the air force, and a brother in law in the marine corps I COMPLETELY support the U.S. military and am VERY thankful for the job they do. But please don't put up some holier then thou shield because that was your best prospect for a career out of high school. And please don't try to put others down for NOT enlisting.

1) You assume too much. Not everyone joins the military for a paycheck. Sorry you had to.
2) There is no holier than thou here except YOU, who seems to think everyone else should know everything about the game or you get pissy and no one said anything bad about anyone here for not enlisting. I can tell you got your ass ripped daily and you probably were a shitbag troop as you come up with outlandish claims based on nothing more than your imagination.
3) Thanks Sav for the post that contributed positively in the middle of this dude's attempt to troll...as if i'm actually angry, lol.

Merchant wouldn't add grapple flares to a fusion weapon (says its a "script" issue). Anyone have a fusion weapon that a merchant allowed flares to be added to? What kind of flares were they?

Thanks for the reply mumblz! I have two items with grapple flares. One is a hadaxe and the other is my plate :) For the % chance I was looking into the perfect handaxe. It is my plate that is fusion.

THat must be exclusive to weapons, because there IS set of a fusion chain that has grapple flares on it. I know this for fact.
So unless weapons/flares are coded differently, that might just be bullshit.
Also, the GM who played Felthrop also claims that 2x is the highest acuity will go. So take that into consideration as well...

the experts are usually down in the mechanics folder, crunching numbers and don't typically bother to help people appraise their items for resale profit.
I think you'd get more valuable information/responses if you've posted there.
But anyways. Typical minor elemental flares has a 1/6 chance of flaring. Typical elemental flares does not have increased chances of flaring when it doesn't.
Although there is no concrete research done onto grapple flares. But base on my observation of it, it does not seem to operate much differently(the way it's coded) than typical minor elemental flares.
Just the messaging is different and crit damage type. As different as a fire flaring falchion to an ice flaring falchion. looks different, but code wise, not really.
You'd definately noticed the difference, if it was coded differently as in Greater Elementals, immolations, bane etc.,

For the record, my plan is to get a "grapple set." All I need now is a shield. I'm surprised no-one has gotten one yet considering a Paladin with 1609 would rock house with it. (Maybe there is someone but I think everyone gets plate done with it when they get the chance) I assume one can still get a string on their shield so it can't get picked off?

Just out of curiosity...
Are grapple flares anymore badass then unbalance flares? They both seem to do the same thing: low number of death crits but high probability for knockdowns. Do people prefer grapple over unbalance for a reason, or is it just because these are relatively new?

Hmm not sure as ive never had unbalance.. but I have been told Grapple flares are much more hardcore than unbalance. so far they have been real nice. I 1615/1630, then mstrike. In a full room that stops a few of them from getting up after the first 1615/30 round. with my agi/dex enhancives i can get off 2 mstrikes in a row then pop back into defensive. I hit up 1630 again (for full rooms) and by the next mstrikes ive usually got it all. If there's like 2 or 3 or them I only need to do 1630 once. at 4 it all depends on how the mstrikes/crits go. 5+ i need two rounds of 1630 plus 2x double mstrikes.

^ and if I get in trouble I beseech and/or rub a ruby amulet. Once in a while I get casted on and forced into offensive. I rub a ruby amulet and then go buck wild. I have 20 rub blue crystals and getting some more multi rub amulets. I haven't died in nelemar since I first got there and didn't know anything lol.
