I'll go into detail at another date.

Suffice to say, for the past 3 days I've been dealing with these.

...

Discuss. I'm going to bed. Vicodin makes me tired.

Coincidence... there was an article in the newspaper about how kidney stones are likened to the pain of child birth (Their exact phrase).

I've heard it said they're even more painful than going through labor. My brother has had them two or three times so I have some idea what you're going through.

Here's hoping you pass it soon.

Ooch. I, too, have heard kidney stones are horribly painful. Take care, hon. I do hope it passes soon. :(

I'm still dealing with the after effects of my intestinal infection so I feel your pain (maybe not the same but trust me). Hang in there! Eventually we'll both be better! :grouphug:

My father was once hospitalized after his kidney stones caused bleeding.

He ended up okay though... but it was gruesome for him.

My mother has had them a few times. I felt so bad for her, they were terrible. Just remind yourself that it will pass eventually.

I know guys don't go through childbirth, but you'd think a guy passing a kidney stone hurts more then a woman passing one.

Owie.

Hehe, that was a great episode of Seinfeld when Kramer passed a kidney stone. Yeah, I can imagine it not being fun.

Owie. I'm no student of anatomy, but aren't the actual urethras of either gender pretty similar? I've heard the external appearance differs pretty substantially, but I always figured the urethra part was the same.

I believe it's the stone inside the kidney that produces the pain. Once it gets into the tubing, you're home free.

Home free = something solid squeezing through my pee hole?

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

Unless of course, it makes you weaker.

The stones my brother had were all relatively miniscule in size. They all passed without medical intervention and without him even noticing. IE, he pissed it out without any realization he was doing so.

Of course, there are much more extreme cases as a little bit of research showed. The below all required anaesthesia and a procedure to remove them.

Drink plenty of water

Eat ice cream and other rich dairy products in moderation

Hope that you are not predisposed to develop kidney stones

my only experience with kidney stones is watching a grown man (at work) curl up on the floor and cry. scared me too.

Doesn't cranberry juice help with kidney stones? Or is that only for bladder infections? I could've sworn I hear that the enzymes helped disintegrate stones.

Oh and Raven - those cystine stones in the picture - they're kinda neat looking. I wonder how they'd look in gold rings and pendants...
All polished up of course...heh

Cherry juice helps with kidney infections, and specifically Uric Acid kidney stones, which are most common in men. Uric Acid buildup is also the primary cause of gout, and someone who produces Uric Acid kidney stones had best be very careful or they will develop gout if they allow it to go unchecked (IE: unmedicated).

It's hard to say which of the two is more painful. Kidney Stones are incredibly painful, both when they are in the kidney and when you are passing them. Gout is long term painful and debilitating to the point where you cannot walk.

As far as whether or not it's more painful for men or women...it's about the same. The tubes inside our bodies are about the same size, and the majority of the pain occurs before the stone reaches the exit point. While the exit point is probably a hell of alot more painful for men, the rest of the process is equally as painful for everyone. I do not envy anyone going through this.

I started developing kidney stones when I was 22 and have had gout since about 24. I didn't take care of myself back then when it started, which is the root of my medical problems today. My best advice to anyone going through this is to take very good care of yourself, see a doctor and find out the cause of the stones and get them treated. Maintain the renal diet they put you on, it's for your own good and will lead to a healthier life in the long run.

You have my sympathy, Beth.

Heh Ive been passing kidney stones for about the past five years started back when I was sixteen and it keeps commin and commin I think I've passed something like thirty some odd stones and tried every pill and remedy possible cooked up and the dr's have the lovely inclination to tell me that must suck. And the spill the Dr's like to give well son they say this is as close as a guy gets to child birth ... I DIDNT WANT TO GET CLOSE TO IT, I was happy knowing I never had to deal with it now Ive supposedly passed thirty man childs? Anyway yea kidney stones can bring the biggest most macho man to his knees in tears.

Oh and PS: Its very demeaning to see how small the stones actually are compared to the hell they deal.
