It has been a while since we've had an official update on how Monks have been coming along. The team has been putting in a great amount of effort into the design, development, and QC necessary for the implementation of the new profession. It has been a long time coming, but I am proud to announce that we are ready to proceed with the player phase of Monk beta testing.

This Friday, May 4th, we will be opening up the test instance to our beta testers. The list of initial eligible participants will include SimuCon 2010 attendees, community leaders, and members of the Mentor Society. You must have an active account in order to participate.

We'll be monitoring the test instance and this forum for feedback throughout the testing period. We'll also be scheduling time with development GMs for more focused testing and live interactions.

Yeah, because they were saying prior to and at Simucon 2010 that monks would go beta in 2010, so registered folks could get into the beta. Some (fools) even registered for Simucon 2010 just to get into the monk beta with no intention of attending the con.

From a very, very reliable source, monks will be released within 45 days.

Someone's going to have a LOT of egg to clean off their face in December...

The release of monks (still much closer than you all think) will flood GS with new and returning players. GS is very much alive and well.

I still think it's funny that entire state of the art graphical games have been developed and released in the time it took Simutronics to get monks into beta.

We do not plan on doing character conversions or other processes which bypass normal mechanics (which would be contrary to our goals in this testing), but we certainly want to see a wide range of levels explored. I (and others) will regularly hand out gobs of experience to the testers to allow fast leveling, and we'll see what happens from there.

Generally speaking, what's the turnaround time for previous releases (say, paladins?) once they got into player beta testing? 90 days? 6 months?

Played just around 20 years. I'm about sick of touting this shit. I'm up for 200 bucks donation IF they stop teasing us with beta monks in the next 2 months.

My monk will be the ultimate fighter with mixed martial arts stances, but he'll also be borderline psionist in his mental abilities. Can't wait to use Telekinesis from the MnM... I've seen clips, think Ithzir seer abilities + old school Wizard Disarm. Very, very cool stuff.

I guess my monk will be more Jedi than anything.

Assuming monks are limited to 1x lore, you're gonna have to make some tough choices regarding which spells you want to buff. All three mental lores are pretty well represented in the minor mental list. A lot of the coolest spells use different lores.

I have a few questions about Monks. I realize we may not have the answers yet, but perhaps some "insiders" can chime in as the information comes trickling in:

1. What classes will be able to convert to Monk?

2. What are the primary stats for monks?

3. How will flaring weapons (like a flaring cestus, for example) tie in to UAC?

4. What is the benefit of robes over leathers or other classes of armors?

5. Do monks strike from hiding?

6. Do monks have redux?

7. What spells can monks cast?

Those were all one shots from hiding. I did die a lot, because you basically have to tailor where you aim and what move you'll use, and even then you aren't always guaranteed a stun or something debilitating. A lot of times I'd kick something in the eye from hiding and get mstriked right after.

Do the attacks from hiding give the unarmed combat any real benefits? I know they commented that Monks were not supposed to be very stealth oriented but I'm curious for a Rogue using the system.

Yes, it raises the tier of the attack by one automatically. I'd still say ambushing with a weapon is superior.

Yes, you get an extra tier off the bat on a good ambush, but you also get phantom ambush weighting. I think it would be pretty effective.

It is alright, but from when I was using it in Nelemar it just isn't as reliable as using a weapon to atleast get a stun. I didn't use cmans like vanish or anything, but I usually don't when it is 1v1 anyways.

I was annihilating destroyers with unarmed ambushes with Droit.
